Is it time for a new GM?

Fool me once, shame on you.

Fool me twice, shame on me.

Try to fool us 3 or more times and fans have a right to be p*ssed.

Some things just don't seem to change.  Every year we wait for something to happen at the trade deadline and get the Sounds of Silence.

A. The deadline is still 2 days away.

B.  Since Ryan has been back, realistically what have the Twins had to trade at the deadline? Willingham a few years ago? Suzuki last year?  It's not like the terrible teams of the past 2-3 years were ripe with over achieving veterans looking to be flipped.

B. a decent argument could be made that by collecting scrap heap veterans every winter who are unlikely to have much if any trade value the following summer, instead of finding good candidates as other GMs in downtrodden org s are sometimes able to do, TR has made his own bed in this regard.

What do you expect to be able to do with Tim Stauffer when you sign him?

The team is sputtering, dazed, and ready to be KO'd--UNLESS something substantial is done.  The Players are looking for leadership--and without it this season could go more than South, it could implode. I mean like 90-loss implode.

17 years as GM. Over 100 games under 500 with one playoff series win and that was 13 years ago. 6 playoff games won in 17 years and the last one 11 years ago. Time has passed him by. Please retire and don't give the job to Antony.

you don't think, when the times comes, he doesn't go with Anthony?

Regardless of what happens now before the trade deadline, Terry Ryan should have never been rehired. Welcome to the move forward faction...... finally.

Don't trust the Twins not to promote from within

After the way Smith failed I don't think it's a given.

That the Twins have hired a manager or general manager from outside during the Pohlad years?

Ever since the Mollie hire, I've had a funny feeling that they'd surprise us with a major changing of the guard. I boldly predict that this offseason or next, Ryan steps down, Molitor becomes GM, and Dougie gets to manage the big club.

I like this scenario, but I'm not ready for Molitor to move up just yet.  I'd like to see him handle this team a little longer.  Could we get rid of Ryan, now, though?  Maybe Tom Kelly could be the interim GM.

No GM is going to be fired mid-season, especially at a time when expectations were low AND the team is actually still 1.5 games up in the WC race.  People are getting extremely ahead of themselves.

I actually mis-spoke.  I was really thinking of after this season is over.

Jeebus, could you at least wait until the trade deadline has passed before you freak out? I know this is Dave's style, but this is seriously ridiculous.

If you read the OP ... it said 'at the end of the season' not now. It's a reasonable discussion to have, imo, and it was presented reasonably ... even if it was from Dave.

TK is half the problem. "Twins way" is mostly his way of doing things. Hard-working, unassuming, over-achiever.

I would like to move as far away from the "Twins way" as possible.

A few losses to some of the hottest teams in baseball and everyone is ready to send Ryan down the road. Starting to sound like Red Sox fans. As if throwing money around would solve all the Twins problems. General managers don't win and lose games, players do. Twins have been playing some sloppy ball. That's not Ryan's fault.

This roster is crippled by mediocrity. It has NO studs. No Johan Santana, Kirby, pre-injured Mauer or Morneau. Perkins, odd as it is to say at this time is the closest. The pitching staff is full of maybe a 2, and the rest are 3-4 1/2's. If you eliminate the young players for whom the jury is still out, and apply the same 1-5, I cannot name a 1. Dozier is a very decent second baseman, but likely not a 1, and if he doesn't adjust to the way he is being pitched, he is going to regress. I put Plouffe and Mauer kind of on the same plane, Mauer better avg, Plouffe more power. Both average fielders. Hunter is a 4.0, whoops I meant 40! I don't have to get into Suzuki, Robinson, Nunez, et all. EE is a nice utility player, who is being presented as the SS. Some of the above, quite a bit, is on Ryan. There are logjams blocking young talent. Many talk about trading prospects for unrealistic returns, or minsicule returns. Just to do something? I would sell, but sell veterans and start moving in the new pieces. Not because the present ones are "bad", but because this is what they are. And it ain't enough.

I think a lot of people haven't been fooled by one amazing month and see that we've had a losing record in two of the first three months and July is trending that way too.

They also see the issues with the bullpen, the shortstop position, the catcher position, and so on.  If you think it's just about the recent losing, I think you haven't been paying much attention.  Teams win and lose on the basis of talent.  This team is lacking MLB ready quality talent.  And the GM is responsible for the talent on the club.

I don't live in, or am from, Minnesota, but have been a Twins' fan all my life.  What is the feeling from most fans in Minnesota as to the reason for the two World Series wins?

They haven't and that doesn't have to be a bad thing. It's outside the box hiring not seen since Andy MacPhail thirty years ago that the Twins need.

The Astros and the Mets are about as surprising contenders this season as the Twins.  As you can see, they are doing something to keep contending, unlike the Twins.

This is the issue here.

Adding the pieces to get you over the hump such as Reardon, Gladden, Baylor, Morris, and Chili.

If Ryan had signed a 29 homerun hitting DH and an ace starter this season (Santana is no ace) I bet we'd be right up there with the Royals.

Everything. A great core of players developed up the system, supplemented by timely free agent signings, a great manager, and really great cohesion. And great fans!

Players have to be feeling down.  Dozier made it clear they were looking for help and a boost.

Players aren't going to complain much publicly but they have to wonder why management is sitting on its hands.  Not just in the trade market but in bringing anyone up from the minors.

I think this is a very important point. It's certainly been mentioned by players in the past.

I wonder if players realize the deadline is July 31 or also think it has already passed.

I wonder if Ryan is aware he can make a move before July 31st? (Or at all based on his history)

Most of this angst is 15 years in the making and understandably so.

This gets brought up every year by the Ryan 100% no matter what apologists. Trades can and often do happen before the zero hour, hell, look at how many have happened so far! Every year it's this whole "well, we still have X number of years to the deadline..TR must still have something up his sleeve" and nothing ever happens of note.

How many trades have the twins been involved in this far? Zero.

Last time I checked, the games in mid to late July count just as much as the ones in August and September...

Your post brings 2007 to mind.  We just don't have a Luis Castillo to be traded while still in the playoff hunt while bringing no one in :-)
