Steve Lein Twins Daily Contributor Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 ...Trevor Story from the Rockies. Reasoning: 1. Tulowitzki is the face of the Franchise, and a far more ingratiated one to their fan base than Joe Mauer is to ours. Think about how Mauer was viewed when winning batting titles and an MVP. That's what Tulowitzki still is in Colorado. I don't so much believe they would trade him, or that any talks the Twins have had with them stayed in that direction for long. 2. If Tulo isn't going anywhere, where would Story play? 2B has D.J. LaMahieu, 3B has Nolan Arenado, SS is Tulowitzki. Story is a prime candidate to send off elsewhere to improve a self-deficiency if you are the Rockies. 3. This works better for the Twins, as it wouldn't cost them a huge haul of prospects which might derail their plans moving forward. I think you're looking at something like Berrios, Arcia, Polanco, and a RP for Tulo. It might just take one of an Arcia, Adam Brett Walker II, or Alex Meyer to get Story. Which type of deal do you like better? Personally, I am in no way against Tulowitzki. I think many around here vastly underestimate what he would bring to their team, but I don't necessarily think it fits the plan the Twins should be following either. http://www.purplerow.com/2015/7/23/9019795/colorado-rockies-prospects-asheville-tourists-trevor-story-on-a-roll

One scout questioned his ability to recognize spin and the consensus is there isn’t enough here offensively for more than a utility guy.
nytwinsfan Provisional Member Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 Sure. Sounds good to me. Do they have any catching prospects while we are at it? EDIT: Yes they do: http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=murphy004tom
James Verified Member Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 4. Dick Monfort controls the team, and he's given no indication that he'll ever trade Tulo. Many times, it sounds like he's down right refused to do so.

I've actually been a fan of Story's for quite a while. He came on my radar a few years ago as a SS prospect the Twins could pursue for the future. Reasoning being, Colorado had Tulowitzki.
diehardtwinsfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 It's not win now, as Story isn't ready at this point. I suppose you could turn around and flip Polcanco or Santana for something decent in that scenario.
Steve Lein Twins Daily Contributor Posted July 23, 2015 Author Posted July 23, 2015 ^ Yes that is true. The "win now" thing is what I mean by the "I don't necessarily think it fits the plan the Twins should be following either" remark.
jimmer Verified Member Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 I doubt Story sticks at shortstop,I think he'll be a 2B in the majors, regardless of the team he plays for. Nice thought though.
jimmer Verified Member Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 I wonder if Orlando Arcia would be available, though not sure why the Brewes would trade him. BTW, is anyone else having a REALLY hard time with this site right now?

I did clear the cache about 20 minutes ago so that may have caused some temporary speed issues.

Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 The Rockies 2B, while a fluke all-star this year, is not that good. They might need Story there. (Indeed Story has begun appearing at the position the last two years.) He also could be insurance for a Tulo trade. They have absolutely no incentive to sell Story cheaply right now. (And selling him for AAA-banished Arcia or Meyer, or everyone's favorite non-prospect prospect Walker, would indeed be selling him cheaply.)

jimmer Verified Member Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 Why would the Brewers do that?they wouldn't. And the Rockies wouldn't trade Story. Both teams are in the same boat :-)
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 I'd be interested in younger players like Story. But the reason the Rockies would look to trade now is to get some prospects and to cut payroll. Pretty standard for rebuilding teams. Moving Tulowitzki does that, moving Story does the opposite.

Story has a better chance sticking at SS than Polanco does. Story also likely would be about the Twins 8th-12th best prospect right now. He's almost top 5 for the Rockies. Arcia, Meyer, or ABW are right in the "value wheelhouse" for what the Twins could offer. Edit: selling Story in the Twins system a bit short considering changes to eligibility, changed from 10th-15th.
jimmer Verified Member Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 Sporting News has Story in their top 50 prospects as of last month and some of the ones ahead have been promoted already. But I seriously doubt he stays at shortstop. He may be brought up to play there like Dozier and Plouffe, but from what I've seen, I think he's a 2B.
kab21 Verified Member Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 The Rockies are not trading prospects even if they are in theory blocked and the Twins should not be trading their best assets for a prospect that won't help this season.
AlwaysinModeration Verified Member Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 ....Cole Hamels? I haven't looked into his contract status or what it might take to get him, but for this year at least, he would be quite a nice addition to the rotation.

Would be around for another 3 years, too...contract runs though 2018 for 23/year.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2015 Posted July 26, 2015 I'd love Hamels on this team, I just don't see how the Twins get it done.
USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted July 26, 2015 Posted July 26, 2015 Who's Cole Hamels?A guy we missed on years ago, when he was offered to the Twins for Duensing.
kab21 Verified Member Posted July 26, 2015 Posted July 26, 2015 Unlike Tulowitzki Hamels is a starter so there should be no reservations about including Gibson or Berrios in the trade. Or both. Whether or not a Berrios led package would be enough is another question.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2015 Posted July 26, 2015 Berrios, Nolasco, Rosario and Gibson for Hamels, do the Phillies even consider?
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted July 26, 2015 Posted July 26, 2015 Berrios, Nolasco, Rosario and Gibson for Hamels, do the Phillies even consider? They'd be fools not to jump at that deal. That's 16 years of control over three good young players plus whatever in Nolasco. The Twins can't afford that deal, IMO. They can give up Berrios or Gibson but not both of them.
Thrylos Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2015 Posted July 26, 2015 Berrios, Nolasco, Rosario and Gibson for Hamels, do the Phillies even consider? Add Papelbon, Diekman and Nola and this might be a balanced trade...

Berrios and Gibson for Hamels essentially (nolasco as salary relief, or not) would be a no brainier for the Twins and provide enough upside to the Phils I think. HamelsHughes Santana May Would be a real nice start to a rotation for the next few years.

They can give up Berrios or Gibson but not both of them.Let's not overrate team control of prospects. Let's throw in Duffey, Gonsalves and Pinto. Now there is 34 years of team control. How can they say no? The Twins can afford that trade and part of the reason that both Berrios and Gibson are included is the Nolasco salary relief. There is definitely not a plus whatever in Nolasco. His value is decidedly negative right now. Take out Nolasco and you might be able to reduce the package. Whether or not that trade is a good idea is another question but Berrios plus Gibson will be lucky to produce the same value (let's use WAR) while occupying two rotation slots. And if there is one weakness on the Twins it is frontline pitching. Maybe Berrios develops into that but there is no guarantee. Adding Hamels turns the Twins into legit contenders. Hamels, Ervin, Hughes and May actually looks respectable although not incredible. But it is a start.
