On Sano being thrown out on third:

 

Glynn was waving Mauer home and ran with Mauer down the line to the plate. So Glynn wasn't even in the play to give a stop sign to Sano. Glynn made a mistake but Sano's inexperience played into it, too.

 

Also, of Sano hits the ball 8 inches further it's a home run

Yes, to all those offensive stats, but how about defense. Hasn't he perfected the the fall-to-the-ground-on-one-knee and-throw-simultaneously method, and doesn't he seem to turn the double play as well as anybody, and he has not made just 3 errors so far this season?

 

So I thought I would look up the DWAR of the second basemen in the American League. I found that Dozier is tied for 5th best defensive second basement in the AL.

 

(I do not pretend to understand DWAR, thus I won't defend it). But someone else, looking at these stats, might have a better idea about what is actually going when rating second basemen).

In my opinion, Sano thought there would be a play at the plate, and wisely tried to take third. Detroits 1B made a somewhat questionable choice to concede the run, and was therefore able to get Miguel by a mile.

It's not worth the gamble to try to take third. It is good to be on third with less than two outs.
