Ervin Santana's suspension is done, so he has to be added to the Twins 40 man roster before Saturday's game. He will start on Sunday.

To make room, Alex Meyer was optioned to Rochester.

3.1 bullpen innings by the Twins yesterday, and 1 K. Meanwhile, Wade Davis gets the win for KC. Would have been nice to see Meyer in that game.

Yup, sounds dumb to say you should bring in a struggling pitcher, but with a guy on third and one out, you need a strikeout. Only two men in the bullpen can do that.

Especially considering those were situations where an intentional walk might have been an option, to set up a helpful force play. In the back of my mind I started thinking "bring in Meyer for a couple batters and either they walk or strike out"

Realistically I don't think Molitor was even considering Meyer though. Meyer needs to get a fairer shake than two hopeless mop up appearances next time.

Meyer didnt get much chance to show his stuff, I agree, but he didnt do anything to earn more of a chance either. He'll be back soon enough if he goes back down and dominates.

FWIW I think it's unrealistic to think any manager would have put Meyer into that game last night while there were still other options.

Would have been nice to see Perkins in that game.

Hard to watch the team lose a game like that against the division leader while your best pitcher never toes the rubber.

It boggles the mind.

When should Perkins have pitched? The 7th, 8th, and 9th?

So... does this confirm a 6-man rotation? Or is a starter [eventually] heading to the bullpen?

hopefully we will get some answer on that soon.

Agree. I have a college degree in second guessing, but even I have to admit it was never realistic to bring Meyer into that game. Just fun to think about.

However, I am hoping either Pelfrey or May are moved to the bullpen, and accepts it as a special assignment and not a demotion. Either of those guys would be capable of getting some late inning strikeouts for us.

And the 10th and possibly 11th, 12th and 13th too.

Not sure why Perkins doesn't pitch every inning.

Don't be ridiculous, Jim.

He only needs to pitch the innings where other relievers give up runs.

If Molitor put Meyer in that situation, I would have turned off the TV and started a fire Molitor thread.

The kid has a chance to be a good one, but he's now where near good enough right now to get us out of a 10th inning jam.

I'm not as adamant about it as some but the Twins needed a K and didn't use their only reliever who excels at getting them in a crucial moment. IMO, he should have started warming after the lead off double.

When he's pretty much the only arm in there worth a damn, that's pretty much the size of it.

Neither is the guy we had out there...

They needed a K in the 9th, too, with the winning run on third and one out. Shouldn't you be arguing for Perkins in that situation instead?

Or the 8th, when the tying run scored?

Of all these scenarios, I think what might have made the most sense was asking Perk for a four out save, and having him pitch to Morales in the 8th.

But even that is second guessing...if that's the case, he should probably have been in to face Hosmer one hitter earlier, and now it's a 5 out save. Where does it stop?

Where do the Twins stand relative to the rest of the league on cloning?

I know I'd be in favor of two more Perks. Do you s'pose we could find some 2009 Mauer DNA lying around while we're at it? ;)

You just listed reasons why I'm not adamant about it. My opinion is that when you're in the 10th/11th innings, you start to go all-in and try to win the game as quickly as possible. That's my personal approach but I realize it's not the only way to approach a game.

That would imply the rest of the pen is good enough to get out of a jam in the 10th. At least with Meyer there's a chance he can get the needed strikeout with a man on 3rd and one out. That was one circumstance where a walk did no harm, thus Meyer was uniquely a better fit than the rest of the pen, aside from Perkins.

I think I'll leave you in charge of finding that last sample.

But 3 walks would have done harm.

This is true, but entering the bottom of the 10th they still needed to pitch at 2 least innings to win. Not unreasonable to roll with Thompson considering the first hitter was RH followed by 3 lefties and then saving Perkins for the next inning.

I actually think this was about playing best matchups and not merely keeping Perkins only for a save situation.
