He could force it to go to the House, where he could win.

No he couldn't/wouldn't.

The only independent that would even get 10%+ of the vote would be Bloomberg, and he won't run if Hilary is.

Governor Christie has gotten back into the race. The vice-presidential race.

You certainly won't see him anytime soon in a 5k race.

No, he couldn't. Romney couldn't beat a guy straight up. He has absolutely no shot with his party's vote split in half.

It's surreal to watch the Republican Party dissolve in real time.

So, caucuses ... do they disenfranchise voters? If you can't be there, in person, at a specific day, time and place, you lose your voice.

Idk, but my parents certainly do. :-/

Yeah I really don't understand this line of thinking, every single blue state went against Romney pretty strongly 8 years ago, he's not going to take any real democrat votes period.

Romney likely wouldn't win a single state and if by some miracle he did it would have been a "red" state anyways, all it would likely result in is a Hilary win several more states over the GOP (even Texas could go blue at that point)

Then I hope he runs.

Btw, Dave, what's up with your home state?

Jesus, usually I say this in jest but I'm seriously afraid for you people.

Holy hell.

Yeah, maybe I should have kept that job I had in Ottawa.

Nebraska? Not much? Why?

It's disturbing but only because it shows how many people out there will support a candidate like Trump, not because he can win.

It was, again, surreal to see multiple GOP stalwarts go on TV last night and virtually declare the death of the Grand Old Party. Lindsey Graham went on CBS and lamented how the republicans have handed away the November election because "crazy loses every time".

Strange days.

That's exactly why I wouldn't count him out in the general election too.  We're in uncharted waters where logic no longer applies, we're going to have to see this thing unfold.

I still can't see it. I know I said that about the primaries but even now, one strong establishment GOP candidate would be giving Trump a run for his money, if not outright leading the polls. The GOP base is fractured, which is allowing Trump to walk through the door. Even last night, a resounding Trump victory, still saw him receive fewer than 50% of the votes in every state. All of them. The only state where he approached 50%, Massachusetts, has roughly a zero percent chance of turning red in the election.

In a general, Clinton will take every significant non-white male demographic. Not most of them... Every single one.

Trump might be able to carry several southern states but I don't see him winning anywhere else. While I know you disagree, I think his sway with independent voters is going to be very, very low. He's too blustery, not presidential enough, to win over reasonable people... And then you add in his mixture of insane policy and vague non-policy and you have a guy who isn't going to appeal to anyone who isn't running on 100% emotion (which is most of the populace, IMO).

The way I see it, the only way Trump makes a run in a general is if liberal apathy goes to an all-time high. That's a possibility with Clinton but with Trump opposing her, I think there's enough fear of "good lord, we can't let that guy win" to turn out liberals and moderates.

To further that point, what happens when Clinton runs attack ads showing black people being roughed up at Trump rallies while Trump screams "Get them out of here!"? How do you think that plays with middle America, the people who do not strongly associate with a party?

It won't play well. It will scare the **** out of people, as it should.

I am not afraid of Trump. I am afraid of Cruz, and I am afraid of the gerrymandering and lack of term limits that has created this Congress........that scares me a lot more than Trump.

Concur.

I don't think Trump has any chance, and i certainly dont want him as president, but truth be told I'd vote for him before I'd vote for Cruz.

It's weird to say but Lindsey Graham was incredibly honest and forthright about the GOP's problems last night (caught it on CBS News and my jaw hit the floor while listening to him speak). He rails on Trump, Cruz, GOP policy, and pretty much everything he can think of in the moment.

Stick through and watch the entire thing. It ramps up as the video progresses.

I'll triple the "more scared of Cruz because, by god, he might win" sentiment.

Cruz terrifies me as much as Trump but I feel he's more dangerous because he has a remote chance of winning a general election where I feel Trump's chances approach zero.

Yes, I am cheering for the destruction of today's GOP. My fear is that Hillary gets the nomination and then is indicted, tossing the election to Trump.

Again, it's time to throw out logic and stop speaking in absolutes.  The real question in the generals is does Trump carry the Republican base?  If that segment goes apathetic, then I struggle to see him winning.  But if it doesn't, if it passionately votes for Trump if for nothing else than to prevent Hillary from winning...then I really think you're trying to make the world fit what you want it to.

Look, I may be forced to vote for Hillary just out of some hope that it prevents a Trump Presidency, but I have no clue what the general will look like.

He's won the hispanic vote despite being a borderline racist.  He's driven moderates and independents to the polls in droves.  (Basically, pulling an Obama and getting a voting populace behind him that doesn't normally vote)  He's got strong support from women for some reason I don't understand.  I simply can't rule out that this bizarre trend continues if the Republican base rallies around him and he continues to pull this other voting segment.

And all of that says nothing about what I expect to happen once he secures the nomination - that his tune will change dramatically.  What that will be and the tone of it I have no idea, but it's coming.  You can bet on that.
