DocBauer Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 I can't believe we haven't gotten to this subject yet. Yeah or nay on the beard? (I like it, FWIW) Is it permanent? Or does it dramatically and conveniently come off if his BA stays sub .300 much longer?
ashbury Verified Member Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 The beard's OK, but Mauer's got to go.
JaleelWhite FanClub Provisional Member Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Guys with beards should swing at the first pitch sometimes.
formerly33 Verified Member Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 It's a good thing Maddie isn't like Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing. "Lord, I could not endure a husband with abeard on his face....He that hath abeard is more than a youth, and he that hath nobeard is less than a man: and he that is more thana youth is not for me, and he that is less than aman, I am not for him."
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 I like it. I like long hair and facial hair on men. Good thing that has no bearing on how one plays baseball ... unless you are that superstitious.
h2oface Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 This sounds like a subject for "The View". I have to abstain any comment about the subject on principle.
Bark's Lounge Verified Member Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Facial hair, long hair, etc., etc... It's all good to me unless it is inspired by "Duck Dynasty", if that is the case, that is just pathetic. Personally, I think Mauer should grow his hair out a bit, get a tight curled perm, shave in a pencil thin mustache, and wear a monacle... but that is only my preference. Joe should do what he wants to do - unless it is inspired by "Duck Dynasty". That cannot be tolerated.
stringer bell Verified Member Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 I think Joe's beard would look a lot better if he were hitting .330 with seven or eight extra-base hits.
Platoon Verified Member Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 I think Joe's beard would look a lot better if he were hitting .330 with seven or eight extra-base hits.. As would Oswaldos Mohawk, Dozier's Doo, and Hunters toothy grin! . Also, I am with Bark on the Duck Dynasty issue. But the subject begs a question. If your beard gets hit by an inside fastball is it a HBP? And if the ball gets lost in there, do all the runners get two bases??

And if the ball gets lost in there, do all the runners get two bases??Pretty sure that's ruled a la Wrigley's Stuck in Vines ground rule double... as long as no fielder touches it! "Generally, when [getting stuck in a beard] happens ... the ball is not only stuck, but lost."
mdawg888 Verified Member Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 I'm sure he's just growing it to go along with the Wild playoff run
LimestoneBaggy Verified Member Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Not a beard, it's a "opening the chocolate milk gone horribly wrong stain". When you have kids, you'll understand.

I've had mine for about 35 years now and feel pretty naked without it.
jimmer Verified Member Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 For his career, Mauer's worst month is April, but this is ridiculous. I am certainly glad they decided to mess with his approach.
James Verified Member Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 I think he decided to copy me. I have had sideburns for years. Last October, I decided to grow a bread... Now Joe has a beard. He didn't start growing this beard until after I was down in Ft. Myers for spring training. Coincidence? I'm thinking no.
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 This isn't Mauer's first flirtation with a beard. Spring training 2010 and I believe also 2007 too. It's perhaps his first extended regular season beard action, though. How about going back to this look?http://mlb.mlb.com/assets/images/3/1/8/108549318/mauerHS_5gb1y34w.jpg I'd also endorse this Photoshop rendered look:http://cdn.na16.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/joe-mauer1.jpg
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 This is the more interesting Twins style trend of 2015, I think: http://www.si.com/extra-mustard/2015/04/16/twins-business-casual-player-photos

If you screw this up, you'll doom Mauer's season.

James Verified Member Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Well then, you have to keep growing your beard until Mauer shaves his. If you screw this up, you'll doom Mauer's season. I think it really means that if I shave, he'll shave his beard shortly afterwards. I'll wait to make that decision until at least May. I want to make sure we get a large enough sample size before we determine if the beard has any effect on his play. Well, if he's copying you, it's time for you to start hitting .320/.410/480 :-)Well, I'm well on my way to that. My softball slash line for the season so far is 1.000/1.000/1.250. It's only a sample size of 4 ABs though. Hopefully Mauer can move his slash line a little closer to mine over the course of the season.
formerly33 Verified Member Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 Guys with beards should swing at the first pitch sometimes.Oh, he does. Take a look at tonight's game. Or did he simply get your little bird?
jimmer Verified Member Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 going into today, Mauer was 20th out of 29 1Bs in pitches per plate appearance. He's been plenty aggressive and he's been making a strong effort to pulling the ball way more. So he's addressed two major fan concerns. and he's having a horrible April.
Thrylos Old-Timey Member Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 His deal, but Mauer with a beard has a doppelgänger. This guy: http://www1.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/Nick+Blackburn+Toronto+Blue+Jays+v+Minnesota+I_AlCO2DeONl.jpg Call it PTSD or what, but, no thanks.
