Blue Jays Interested in Terry Ryan

Sounds like the Blue Jays are interested in Terry Ryan as they search for a new president/CEO:

Clearly, Terry Ryan is still respected in the baseball community despite the poor quality that has been found on the field the last new years.  If the Jays were actually to hire Ryan from the Twins (and that's a big if) would the Twins promote Antony to GM or would they actually hire someone from outside the organization?

I don't know but i doubt Ryan goes anywhere.  He stayed here during the contraction mess, he's set for life, the Pohlad's are basically letting him run the show as he sees fit.  Maybe he can get a raise out of this but I'd be stunned if he left.

If he did leave, I think at this late date, Anthony would be the obvious replacement but they might only keep him for a year or so.

Sounds like Berardino asked someone's reaction to Ryan's name, the person said, "yeah, he's real good, would love to have him", and that's it.  The Blue Jays were mentioned as a landing spot for Ryan years ago, when contraction was an issue, if I recall.  Presumably they still think well of him.

If I was Jim Pohlad and Ryan came to me saying he had an offer to be a president somewhere else, I'd tell him he could have DSP's job, why move.  But, that's if I was Pohlad. :)

Ryan is still the guy around the league. Only in Minnesota do we hate on Terry. Others would also find it comical that people hate on Joe Mauer. The easiest thing to do when things go wrong is to blame the teams best player.

I hope Ryan is not allowed to interview because he is building a powerhouse here. It is taking a long time, but why not do it if you have job security? A reboot was needed. We will see how the winter meetings go to see if this season is another punt.

Yeah, that reporting from Berardino was pretty thin gruel, as far as how much demand is out there for Ryan, and the level of current interest from the Jays.

But if Ryan were to take the Pres. spot, that would mean Anthony was the successor at GM, which would still only leave one "baseball man" in a position of power in upper management.  To me, Anthony disqualified himself last spring from any job higher than his current position, and I doubt an outside successor would be interested in keeping him on.

I would definitely go along with your proposal for Ryan- but only if an outside search firm or blue ribbon committee was formed to find candidates with specific backgrounds and philosophies, and then to come up with, say, three names outside of the organization to choose from as the next GM.

Fans can express an unobjective view about any aspect of their team, positive or negative. The ammount of endless complaining could make you wonder if you need to post the suicide hotline numer or a therapist. Not very often here the last few years, but there are times you want to break the rose colored glasses.

Ryan to Toronto? That would move Ryan further away from the field. It could get him a raise, but I think if he wanted more money, Ryan would ask.

On the plus side if Ryan were to take the Toronto job, there would be quite a few volunteers to help him move, and pack up his crew, too. Somebody from Pennsylvania would drive to help

Let's put it this way, I'd prefer someone other than Antony as GM, but I'd prefer Antony with  Ryan as the President than with Ryan gone  and DSP still as president. :)

But this is all thought-experiment, as Berardino's scoop sounds a lot like the reporter ran into a Jays source at the hotel and asked how Ryan would fit their current job opening.  I was especially skeptical of the word 'yet' in "but was unsure if the Blue Jays had contacted the Twins yet to request permission".  This really sounds to me like an old-school Hot Stove League item.

This is GREAT news........ Take the job, Terry Ryan! Immediately if not sooner!  And hire someone from outside the org!

I don't think he'd be interested with his age and health issues. Would he want to uproot whatever he has here and start a brand new job with all new people? I personally wouldnt, but who knows.

Since he can't get fired this would be the next best thing. Get gone bro. He can go sink the Jays! We detest him locally because we see his crap every day every year. The man doesn't evolve with his sport nor utilize all avenues available to him and for me, that's strikes 1-3.

And Gardy would be hired by sunset the day he was fired, too, amiright?

Terry Ryan is flattered by someone speculating that another team is interested in him, but "Ryan is a Twin," a friend says

I have to say that this thread is really a disappointment.  When I read the news on MLBTR I rubbed my hands together in anticipation of WW3 breaking out on Twins Daily.

Come on boys (and girls) let's get this thing revved up!

But doesn't it make you wonder a bit, Chief, that if the Twins are fools to retain Ryan, how completely inept the Blue Jays must be to even consider someone so obviously incompetent? (Tongue firmly in cheek)

I think Ryan has a lifetime position with the Twins in some capacity. If anything, he loves to evaluate players. Does he need the money an upgrade in job title would bring, combined with paperwork and other duties? No.

But, yes, the question remains: who would be the next general manager.

If he wanted to leave, he would have gone to Toronto 13 years ago. He's not going anywhere, nor should he, or at least I would be shocked if he did.

Next GM? In my opinion, the favorite would be Mike Radcliff, but Rob Antony would be just fine too.

You must have missed the roster decisions last spring training?

With no judgments on Ryan in this post, I would have to say the Blue Jays have been making mostly poor decisions most of the last decade.

This was the standard trying-to-make-a-story-out-of-nothing. I mean, re-read the initial report (emphasis mine):

According to a person with direct knowledge, Ryan, 61, is high on a list of potential candidates to replace outgoing Blue Jays President/CEO Paul Beeston.

The source called Ryan “a great name” but was unsure if the Blue Jays had contacted the Twins yet to request permission to interview him for the position, which would be a promotion.

There was just nothing there to suggest this was a legitimate possibility. Ryan dismissed this today on the MLB Network radio:

https://twitter.com/MLBNetworkRadio/status/541981388078329856

There's truth in that. He's a scout, not a business man. Are there people in the Blue Jays' organization that like Ryan? Sure. But unless something else comes out, this is a non-story.

At least Radcliff has player personnel and scouting experience beyond selling them to the media or negotiating the contract (St. Peter and Antony).

In your opinion, was handing the reins to Bill Smith "just fine" too?

I have no doubt that the next-in-line is a hard worker and gets along great with other Twins personnel, but we have very recent evidence that isn't all it takes to be a successful MLB GM (and that the Twins haven't earned much benefit of the doubt that they are properly considering those other factors).

The proliferation of unnamed, unconfirmable sources in the past few years drives me crazy. Either have the courage and decency to put your name to something or shut your mouth.

EDIT: This is to say, I really don't find anything to look into, be concerned about, or even discuss on this topic. And I'm a grumpy old man when it comes to modern journalism.

I'm barely middle aged, but I feel the same.  This is all closer to passing notes in the junior high cafeteria than journalism.

Berardino asks Ryan to debunk the rumor that Berardino basically created out of whole cloth.  Material for two days' columns.  Next up: Ryan may be in on Kershaw, after calling him a "pretty darn good pitcher".

True, but in Berardino's defense, Ryan doesn't give a beat writer covering the winter meetings much chance to justify the per diem costs of a trip to San Diego.

"Monday Twins Notes from the Winter Meetings: Nada."

"Tuesday Twins Notes from the Winter Meetings: Zilch."

"Wednesday Twins Notes...etc etc"

That is not true. La Velle has us linked to four guys I have never heard of.
