Rule V targets

Someone needs to reverse analyze past Rule V eligible players.  Seeing which picks made an impact and which picks didn't can be fun, but seeing which players were eligible but DIDN'T get picked and seeing which kinds turned out to be solid MLBers seems like it would be a much better way to identify a Rule V stratagy since the sample size likely is much larger..

Who are some of the best current MLBers who at one time were Rule V eligible?  Is there a position that is more likely to pan out?  Power arms, good contact hitters? What level were they playing at? Were they college, HS or international signings?

Here's the good thing about taking a high upside, high risk guy....there is almost no downside. If they bring in DeShields and he's not working out they simply let him go. You don't really lose anything except the chance to have picked someone else that probably wouldn't have panned out.

I don't have the info in front of me at the moment but I know Uggla, Victorino (twice IIRC), Jose Bautista, and Josh Hamilton are some hitters. I was thinking Werth was also but not for sure. Soria, Santana, Alfredo Simon, and Dickey are some recent pitchers.

All of these guys turned out to be all stars. I am sure there are others too that I missed. It is a pretty good low cost gamble to take.

I agree, take Deshields, start him against lefties and use him as a pinch runner/defensive replacement, then drop him after a few weeks if he is playing worse than Hicks (unlikely IMO). His speed is valuable even if his bat is still mediocre, and his long-term upside is more than Schafer or (probably) Hicks.

After the Hunter acquisition I'm more on board with DeShields, his speed will make up for the lack of speed with Hunter/Arcia and Torri would be a great mentor for him. He will most likely struggle (not a given though) but he couldn't struggle more than Hicks did and Hicks was asked to be "the guy" where DeShields could come in and be asked to just learn. I'm fully on board with him!

My only question is will anyone draft him before us? The Astros obviously won't so that leaves the D-Backs, Rangers, and Red Sox. I feel like the Red Sox are trying to rebound and win now based on their recent signings so they are probably out. That leaves the D-Backs and Rangers, any shot those guys go with DeShields?

DeShields seems to have a poor mental make-up from reports.  Though perhaps that's exactly the kind of reason the Twins would want to bring in a Torii Hunter.  I guess it's also easier to use the 25th roster spot on a guy if he's regularly a late inning defenisve replacement and the first choice for pinch runner.

It could be the way the Royals used Dyson although I'm not hopeful for a playoff run in 2015 for us so I say start him and let him develop. The mental makeup thing seems overblown to me, there seems to be some light anecdotal stuff but no real evidence, could also have just clashed with a coach or 2 (happens more frequently than you would think). I think Torri helps out a lot in this manner. Hicks had these same issues but it seemed to be more of a him and Gardy thing than anything else (and it's not like that wasn't an issue with others through the years) so it would be like getting Hicks with more speed and more potential

I would be thrilled with DeShields but doesn't someone like Jarlin Garcia seem like a better fit?

Totes agree. Those are my top two choices, although Garcia, like DeShields, has not progressed that far in his system, and would experience a big jump. But with us taking Hunter, it is not like we are attempting to make the playoffs this year anyway, so let's get someone of value while we're at it.

Deshields would not be as hard to stash as other position players in that he could be a late innings defensive replacement and pinch runner.  However, getting very limited ABS can't help in development.

Garcia's upside is pretty intriguing.  I am just excited that we might actually get a pretty good player in the Rule V draft.

With Torii the roster is at 40.  How long before the draft must a spot be freed up - or is it already too late?  (I know it's too late to protect anyone they already had.)  Dropping someone means giving other teams a shot at taking him, so it surely can't be absolutely at the last minute.

Teams can make a second, and third, pick in the Rule 5...right? This team is going nowhere. So why not take a flier on a couple of young talents with big upside?

Also, the Hunter signing almost telegraphs taking Deshields....that is the Twins Way.

I'm beginning to change my mind, and am going back to pitching over DeShields*

*note, I am not just typing that because TR reads what I type here, and then does the opposite.....

Dropping someone doesn't necessarily make them Rule 5 eligible -- it puts them through waivers and/or into free agency.  And since the waiver order is basically the same as the Rule 5 order, it would actually be better for the claiming team to get a guy on waivers, without the roster restrictions, rather than through Rule 5.

I suspect you can drop guys right up to whatever administrative deadline they have for starting the draft.  (You just can't drop guys you recently protected in November.)

Twins lost Colabello to the Blue Jays on Waivers, so there's another 40-Man Spot available.

Hard to say at this point if it will stay that way for the Rule V draft with all the rumors about starting pitching. Maybe Thompson and/or Parmelee will be dropped this week as well.

What is it with Toronto claiming Twins players?

Good for him, if anyone is going to get the most out of his all-or-nothing swing with way too much movement, it will be Toronto.

He does, but as a reliever. But I don't think the Twins will select a guy who has not pitched above high A and play him in the majors.

I looked up his stats after reading BA.  Only 91 K in 135 IP.  Kind of weird.

I think we take a guy with velocity and put him in the pen.

A good thought. I thought you could also look at those selected and returned. I started looking and realized a large problem that I don't see how to get around.

All of the players eligible for the rule 5 that are not picked spend that next full year in the minors. There is no way to know how they would have performed had they been stashed on the major league bench for the year before returning to the minors the next year. I would assume that it would have negatively impacted their future performance in the game.
