Pairing him with Zoilo Almonte would be a good platoon in left field if Fredi can actually do it right.

Does that seem like his managerial style? I don't know if the manager in Atlanta is the type to platoon guys or if he's in the "veteran presence" camp.

Some recent moves that are now "official":

Pirates and Orioles agree on a deal sending Travis Snider to Baltimore (more competition for Parmelee)

The Marlins Agree to a 1 year deal with Ichiro

The Red Sox and the Rangers traded pitchers; the Sox get lefty Robbie Ross, Jr and the Rangers acquire righty Anthony Ranaudo - both are 25 years old, though Ross has a few seasons of MLB service time already and Ranaudo debuted in 2014.

Considering how much they love Twins players, isn't Chris Parmelee a lock for Baltimore?  I know I've seen a couple of Chris Davis comparisons on this site before.

it's awesome you called this over a month ago!

Ha, I forgot about that.  I'd like to brag but if Chris Parmelee's landing spot had been a Family Fued question, Baltimore and Toronto probably would have been the top two answers on the board.

Enough with the false modesty.  The rooster doesn't get nearly enough credit for predicting the sunrise each morning.

White Sox just made a pair of moves - they are reuniting with inf. Gordon Beckham and have designated outfielder Dayan Viciedo for assignment. They had seemingly been trying to trade Viciedo for the last year or so (though it was more overt in the offseason). Still a chance they can get a little something back for him now.

OK, did I just read minorleagueball correctly, but did the Rangers just pick up Anthony Raunado for their version of Brian Duensing?  If so, where the heck was Terry Ryan on that?  I'd have added Milone to sweenten that deal in a heartbeat.

Scott Baker to #Yankees on a MiLB deal, per source. Invite to spring training.

I'm no fan of Robbie Ross, but he is over 6 years younger than Duensing.  Even with a few MLB seasons under his belt, he's still younger now than when Duensing made his MLB debut back in 2009.  And Ross isn't even arb eligible until next season -- he's making league minimum now, with at least 4 full years of team control, versus Duensing's $2.7 mil for one season then free agency.  Ross also has two option years remaining if they want to demote him while he gets healthy or they explore starting more, etc.

Ross also had a 163 ERA+ over his two full relief seasons, better than any single Duensing season (and much better than his exclusive relief seasons).

I'm not sure if Milone is necessarily a desired sweetener, either.  Especially to a team trading a starter like Ranaudo.  Milone is making $2.8 mil this season too -- a team taking on both pitchers would be adding $5 mil in 2015 payroll alone.

This was pretty clearly a prospect/young player challenge trade.  Duensing doesn't really fit the parameters (arguably never did).  Milone might barely, for the right team.

Sources: #RedSox in agreement with free-agent reliever Alexi Ogando on a one-year, major-league contract, pending a physical.

#Rangers non-tendered Ogando due to health concerns. Shoulder, biceps issues in ’13, just 27 appearances in ’14 due to elbow inflammation.

No kidding.

Good news for the Twins. He's not only out of the division, he's out of the league.

But we may be facing him in Game 7 this fall.

I love what San Diego has done this offseason.  Talk about going all in - and they're still in a position to make a move or two.  The biggest question mark I have is having essentially 3 right fielders occupy the outfield.

Also, interesting that now Shields and the big name prospect he was traded for, Wil Myers, are on the same squad, and it's neither squad involved with that trade just two offseasons ago.

Not resting on their laurels.

The most amazing thing about this offseason for the Padres is they didn't really go that hard into their farm, they largely kept their best assets and added a ton of talent.

That's the biggest thing.  If they got to July and Cliff Lee or Cole Hamels would put them over the top, a guy like Austin Hedges is still there as a keypoint of a deal.  They also didn't move a lot of their big league young talent, though I will say swapping Grandal for Norris may bite them a bit.  They're also looking at a possible influx of picks from two possible qualifying offer guys after the season in Upton and possibly Kennedy, so losing their first-round pick this year may not hurt as bad because they'll end up with 3 in the top 40 or so next season.

It's an offseason like this that can energize a fanbase.  The Padres may have spent money and traded a pile of depth type prospects (along with a couple of good ones) but they are probably going to make that money back in increased ticket sales.

I blogged about this a week ago here - https://fantasybaseballrebooted.wordpress.com/2015/02/04/what-were-the-padres-thinking/

What I find interesting is that the Forbes survey of MLB team finances shows the Twins and Padres pretty closely matched for franchise value and annual revenue and profit.  If they can do it, I'm hoping an off-season soon for the Twins will be like this, when the core has arrived.

The Padres still have a lower payroll and future commitments despite their splash this year.  My favorite part of the Padres offseason is that they traded 2nd tier prospects (let's say 51-100+ ranked) for good MLB players.

For all the Jason Repko fans out there, you can see him in the Twin Cities this year. You will just have to go to St Paul to do so. Jason Repko signs with the Sioux Falls Canaries.

I guess the Padres want to be Braves West. Does anybody think that Melvin Jr. will be traded to the team that Justin signs with?
