Star Wars Episode VII

I am pretty damn excited about this movie.

 

When I was seven going on eight I seen Return of the Jedi in the Theater around 8 -10 times in 1983.

I never read the books or comics that came out after the original trilogy and I can say the same for that after the episodes I-III.

 

I don’t know too much about the expanded universe, but I have read a good amount on the internet, and it is interesting to say the least with some good and bad points.

 

I am excited to have a closure situation with Luke, Leia, Han, Chewbacca, etc. – I never thought that this would happen, but what the heck – it did. I want it to be great and I think it can be.

 

Much respect and appreciation to George Lucas, but with his I-III Trilogy he seemed to lose his edge, whether it was his age or the fact that he became a full time single dad, I do not know. Those movies were lacking, not to say there were not some good parts, but overall, I think that is a given they were lacking of certain elements and too CGI dominated.

 

Certainly, I must think most Star Wars fans cringed when Disney bought LucasFilm from George Lucas, but after some time has elapsed, I think there is a chance they will do it right and bring back the old feel as much as they can.

 

Disney bought Marvel Comics and have let them sort of do it there way. It should be the same with Star Wars hopefully.

 

Really, I am putting this thread out there to be a Star Wars info thread until Episode VII is released. Episode VII may be 14 months away, but I think it is time to get started. There is already a lot of info on this movie floating around and some maybe spoilers too.

 

I know there are some Star Wars fans on this site and let’s have some fun with it.

 

Updates, Ideas, opinions are great!

I liked the reboot of Star Trek. If these movies are at least that good, I'll be good with them. There were some great things in the prequels, but Lucas was always better at the outline than the execution. The best move is the second one. That was NOT directed by Lucas.....

If there had been a bunch of lens flare in Episode 4, Luke would never have seen well enough to hit his target there at the end.  I hope JJ keeps this in mind.

This what I read somewhere maybe 6 months ago.

 

Michael Arndt originally wrote the script/story treatment, but JJ Abrams was not pleased that his script did not greatly involve Luke, Han, Chewie, Leia, etc., so he scrapped Arndt's version and Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan co-wrote a new script. This is good news as Kasdan co-wrote Empire and Return of the Jedi.

 

Most of us will probably agree that The Empire Strikes Back was the best of them all and Jedi was a great movie. I would have to think Abrams understands what is on the line and knows that failure is not an option.

 

I was very skeptical about Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher reprising their roles because of the manor in which they aged, but they whooped their arses into shape and they look pretty fit and up to the challenge. Hamill's beard is a nice touch.

 

In my opinion, I think it is greatly important that they use the IV-VI characters prominently in the first movie or two to make the transition to the newer characters. The great challenge will be to create new characters that the fans and spectators can buy into, connect with, and make it worthwhile long term as that is what Disney's plan seems to be.

Like you, I went one of the first weeks the original Star Wars came out. I was prepared to dislike it because I was a Star Trek fan, but instead I went back to see it several times.

 

After seeing Star Wars, I heard that the folks who finally got around to making the first Star Trek movie had decided to delay release because they didn't want to compete with Star Wars. If true, it was a smart choice. When I finally did see Star Trek - the Motion Picture, I was really disappointed because I couldn't help but compare it to Star Wars.

Yep. It was actually a little surprising anyone put up the money to do a second one, much less a 3rd... and... and...

 

And if they hadn't, we'd have all missed out on classic lines like, "double dumbass on you!"

When I finally did see Star Trek - the Motion Picture, I was really disappointed because I couldn't help but compare it to Star Wars.

That probably had more to do with ST:TMP being a cure for insomnia than anything to do with Star Wars.

 

That movie is absurd in so many ways. Beneath the eight minute long shots of the Enterprise, it's a pretty decent sci-fi movie but it's almost impossible to get past the fact that the director held the camera on the Enterprise for eight &(^%ing minutes.

When I realized, "oh, he's eventually going to have to go back for that Walkman", I stopped paying attention to the plot.  Pretty much defines the state of the art for special effects, however.

The plot isn't really the strong point of GotG. It's just a fun movie. A bit overrated, IMO, but still good.

 

The Winter Soldier, on the other hand... Just watched that movie again. Holy moly, that film is awesome.

 

This is related to the thread because the first Captain America film was directed by the guy who designed most of the Star Wars vehicles and storyboarded Ep IV so neener neener neener.

Loved Winter Soldier and I'd describe Guardians of the Galaxy as a good version of what Michael Bay tries to do.  

 

Marvel has absolutely mastered how to pace a superhero movie, hopefully Abrams is better at that in his Star Wars movies than he was in his Star Trek movies.

I think he will be if only because his Star Trek movies were basically Star Wars movies that featured the Enterprise.

Just watched Winter Soldier for the first time, very, very good movie. I found Guardians to just be plain old fun. One of the most fun movie experiences in some time for me. There were some plot HOLES to be sure, but really, I just watched it and enjoyed it.
