Just watched Winter Soldier for the first time, very, very good movie. I found Guardians to just be plain old fun. One of the most fun movie experiences in some time for me. There were some plot HOLES to be sure, but really, I just watched it and enjoyed it.

 

My wife (a non-nerd who I have insidiously nerded-up over the years) was absolutely in love with the movie.  And then the baby dancing groot hit and she didn't stop talking about it for a month.  I still get a weekly question about when the DVD is coming out.

 

Winter Soldier is criminally underrated.  In the Marvel catalogue I'd put it only behind the first Iron Man in terms of quality.  Even as I type that I waiver on if it's even behind that movie.

Upon re-watching Winter Soldier, I think it's probably the best Marvel movie, though I still might prefer The Avengers because Whedon did such a great job breathing life into those characters while staying true to their comic roots.

I was going to make one of these for the wife but the model from which they're based shot through the roof on eBay within days of the movie releasing.

Moderator note ... let's not let this topic get astray.  If you want to talk about Star TREK, start a new thread.  This thread is about Star WARS.  Wait, is there a difference?

If ever there was a clear case to be made for the importance of moderators stepping in and preventing a thread-jacking, this is it.

 

I have to accept major responsibility here, for having mentioned Star Trek a few days ago (though I was not the first, so I get to really blame mike for this thing).

 

Star Trek comparisons are one thing, but I am now sorry I even went down that path, because it led to comparisons and discussions of other obscure and inferior films, that is simply a bridge too far!

 

Of course, if, instead, you all had moved on to discuss another movie worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as Star Wars/Star Trek, such as "Galaxy QUEST", which gave us masterful acting performances by Tim Allen, Alan Rickman and Sigourney Weaver's cleavage, that at least would have been far more understandable and tolerable.

 

Again, I apologize for my role in this dastardly thread-jacking.

It's not really schlocky enough for me. The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and The Empire Strikes Back are cornball names. It's one of Star Wars' charms, as it *should* be a throwback to 1950s serialized action television.

 

Eh, then again it might grow on me in time.

I agree on the desire for a more schlocky name. What's Episode VIII going to be? "The Empire Strikes Back... Again"?

 

Then again, I don't go see these movies for their names.

Okay, since we are all over the place in this thread, I'm going to throw in yet another thread jack, but somewhat related.  Have y'all seen the renderings of the new Lucas museum that will be built in Chicago?  It fits right in with the 'spaceship quality' that is now Soldier Field and will be a stone's throw away from there.

How lame would it be if the OP pissed and moaned about this thread being hijacked when the OP has an Avatar of a Hijacker?

 

My favorite Star Trek character was Ricardo Montalbán, although that movie would have been much better if Hervé Villechaize was Ricardo's sidekick. Oh well, not all movies can be perfect.

There is so much pressure riding on this movie that I feel as though JJ is going to be extra careful about getting it right. He has a lot of ups and downs in his career and this could quite literally tarnish his name forever if he botches it. That being said, I fully expect him to make sure his action scenes are over the top awesome, his Star Wars historical accuracy will be on point and he'll include just enough but not too much classic JJ Abrams weirdness. Whether or not it ends up being really good, I'm super excited. It's another Star Wars movie with brand new material. Should be fun.

Anyone have any thoughts on Rian Johnson writing and directing Episode VIII? I thought his hardboiled noir film "Brick" was excellent and the bits and pieces I have seen from "Looper" were pretty good. I may be biased as I am a pretty big fan of JGL.

 

To me Johnson is an intriguing choice and I like the fact that he is 40, almost 41, that means he was a little kid when the original trilogy movies were released and that probably has had a lasting impact on his imagination, creativity and maybe, the reason he got into the business of making movies.

I haven't watched Brick yet. Had it in my queue forever, just haven't gotten to it... Heard nothing but good things.

 

Looper was good until the last five minutes when they blew up the plot - making the entire thing completely nonsensical in the process - just for a "shocking" ending that wasn't terribly shocking. I was really into the film until that point.

I didn't see the ending of Looper. I am sure I will watch it in it's entirety at some point.

 

In my opinion Brick is a worthwhile investment of your time. When you get to it, I hope you like it.
