Things to Think About: 1. Spoiler -- The Twins did a little spoiling last night and the Stupid Royals failed to take advantage of it. Now the Twins gotta do it again... I hope the Stupid Royals are able to take advantage of it this time. 2. Where did the time go -- There are just 11 games left... It seems like it was just a couple of days ago when the Twins were out of the race in July. 3. Josmil Pinto -- Everyday someone comments how Josmil Pinto is not in the lineup and once again tonight... He is not in the lineup. I know this won't stop the comments but it's pretty clear that Gardy takes the integrity of a pennant chase seriously... and truth be told... I'm a fan of integrity. When facing a team in contention... Gardy is going to put what he thinks is the best lineup on the field and I respect that. He thinks he owes to the teams competing and I think he's right. Now... It can certainly be debated if Suzuki or Pinto should be part of the best lineup but it's pretty clear that Gardy thinks Suzuki is part of that best lineup and that is why he's playing and Pinto is getting splinters in his butt. Over in Philadelphia... Hot 3B Prospect... Maikel Franco is also spending more time on the bench then on the field. Just pointing out that Gardy isn't the only one. 4. CERA -- Catcher's ERA is far from a perfect stat and like most stats... They need to be applied and even implied with a grain of salt. However... myself... I've always been intrigued by the stat because it's at least something that can be used to quantify the game calling ability of the catcher. Again... It's not perfect... There are too many factors that will taint the stat especially when you consider that the pitcher probably plays a much larger role so the catcher is kinda along for the ride. With all of that... As a disclaimer. Suzuki has a CERA of 4.55 and Pinto has a CERA of 4.96. Mauer was 4.06 in 2013. I'm not implying anything at all.. Just throwing it out there because it's late in the year and coming up with 5 thoughts about the Twins is harder every day. 5. Hair -- I ran into a friend from School... Someone I haven't seen in years. I didn't recognize him but he recognized me. It's not totally my fault... He's balding and has lost most of his hair. He used to have long 80's Rock Band Hair so it was quite the change and I couldn't help it... I asked him... "What Happened to your hair?" He said "It's gone but it's coming in strong now on my back... and in my ears". I laughed and he finished with "Yep... I'm losing the hair on my head but my back is in puberty".

Hosken Bombo Disco Community Moderator Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 Free Pinto! Ok RB, Gardy believes Zuke is having a great year and is superior to Pinto... why can't we do what's best for the Minnesota Twins instead of what's best for the "integrity of the game" and the Detroit Tigers!!! /soapbox

It's pretty clear from the lack of playing time that Pinto is little more than an afterthought in the Twins plans going forward, at least to Gardy, and apparently not enough of a point of emphasis for Ryan to tell Gardy to get him in more. Even Fryer has gotten a start at Catcher since the call-up date. And so much for Santana getting some major SS immersion in September. Santana is actually playing in CF tonight, yet again, over not one, but two players who have played almost exclusively in CF for their entire professional careers.
Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 Beautiful night out. Enjoy them while the enjoying is good.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 Basically, he is looking pinto in the face and saying. ...."you suck, I refuse to play you." And people wonder why we think he is not good for young players.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 I don't think he has any idea that he is sending that message, btw.

But given the recent politicization of the Washington Redskins name, I got to thinking about all the team names I've been associated with over the years, and almost all have been large fauna... Most politically incorrect team name I recall was the Orofino, Idaho, high school team, known as the Maniacs. It was where the insane asylum was located years ago. Worst team name ever: the Heidelberg (Ohio) Student Princes. What were your team names? Remember playing against any teams with fantastic names, or really bad names?

And people wonder why we think he is not good for young players. He has to go! Butera, Bartlett, Kubel, Guerrere (sp), all players he wanted to keep or add. Some well past there prime, some never had a prime. You can add Punto, but not because he was not an acceptable utility man, but because to Gardy he was a full time player. Maybe the "twins way" should be "twins player"! And there are times when it appears ability has nothing to do with it!
