John Bonnes Site Manager Posted July 31, 2014 Author Posted July 31, 2014 Do people feel any different about a Suzuki extension now than they did a week ago when it appeared the Twins might be able to get the Cardinals and Orioles in a bidding war? Not that things a looking a bit more grim, why not plug that hole for a couple of years? Would anyone out there object to a 2 year/$15M deal for him right now if that came down? I wouldn't.
Boom Boom Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Honestly I don't see a Suzuki trade or extension happening now. I think they'll hold on to him for the rest of the season hoping to work out a new contract. Willingham and Correia will be traded in August.

I think that 2/15 would be an overpay for Suzuki. Also, Suzuki has to agree to it. It sounds like he wants more than that anyway. Edited July 31, 2014 by Boom Boom Danchat 1
James Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 I think that 2/15 would be an overpay for Suzuki.I agree, it probably would be an overpay. But, the Twins are probably not going to be spending much money elsewhere during that time, so is there any problem with overpaying a bit?
TwinsCD Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Joel Sherman from MLB saying that Price will be traded by the deadline. Makes me wonder about the Rays commitment level to this year if they're gonna let him go. They've been pretty hot since mid-June, though they could use a bat or two to get them even further up the standings.

I think it'd be a good deal for him. Isn't 1 WAR worth about 5 Mil on the FA market? All they'd need is for Suzuki to be worth 3 WAR over 2 years. I'd like to see him backup more and Pinto or whoever start more, but that seems pretty cheap.
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Can we please extend this trade deadline another day or so? This is too much fun. I've got news for you John: there is another trade deadline of August 31st! Willingham and Correia are probably more likely candidates for August waiver claims/trades anyway.
Winston Smith Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Too much for the Suzuki magic bus!

It sounds like he wants more than that anyway.Perhaps an overpay but does it matter if the twins spend an extra couple million? Do we think they're going to make a big splash this offseason that 3 million would push over the top?
Thegrin Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Pino the catcher would kill the Twins starters if they can't trust that low breaking balls will be blocked or that runners will not be thrown out or that close pitches will not be framed properly. What will the Twins do for a catcher in 2015 ?
nater79a Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 2/15 is WAY overpaying for Suzuki. 2/10 to 2/12 is more like it. This is a "career year" with the bat. Historical numbers in the .240 range.
James Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 I've got news for you John: there is another trade deadline of August 31st! Yeah, but this deadline has been very active and fun. The August trade deadline is usually a little more low key.
James Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 And Asdrubal Cabrera is apparently gone...
Tuba Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 If Suzuki started hitting .180 tomorrow is there anyone that really believes he could bring it back to .300? Gotta trade him while his value is so high.
Boom Boom Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 I agree, it probably would be an overpay. But, the Twins are probably not going to be spending much money elsewhere during that time, so is there any problem with overpaying a bit? Well, there is the possibility that Suzuki wants more money to stay in Minnesota because the team around him is bad. He doesn't have to take the offer. If the Twins offer 2/$15, and Suzuki's camp comes back with 3/$24, do you still do it?
James Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 The Braves are also out on Andrew Miller. Maybe they have TR on the phone talking about Duensing right now? I know, not the same level of pitcher, but Atlanta needs a LHR and are probably looking for a cheaper option.
Dman Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 I would be fine as high as 2/18 as long as it is only two years. I just think they really want three years at 8 million to do an extension otherwise they are likely inclined to see what the market brings them. Based on last year he should be able to get 3 years for 21 mil pretty easy I would think. Coupled with the lack of available catchers he could go 3/24. I have to believe it's the years that will be sticking point and to extend you typically have to overpay to make a deal. IMO they should trade him and overpay in FA makes it a win, win that way.

DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Hasn't this been covered? Most likely Milone is only in AAA because a) he was already in AAA for Oaklandb.) the SP whom he will be replacing on the 25 man roster is scheduled to start before Milone is available to pitch (since he pitched 2 days ago). Darnell pitches on Friday and Pino pitches on Saturday. Presumably Milone isn't available until Sunday.Pfft Facts, it's much more easy and fun to bash the Twins front office for not knowing how to work a 25 man roster old nurse 1
James Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Cabrera to who? When it was first reported, the other team wasn't listed. It now looks like he was acquired by the Nationals.
twinsfan34 Provisional Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Andrew Miller is being traded to the Orioles...curious to see how expensive he was - other than Parmalee - the guy is lights out on LH's. He's a free agent after 2015. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/millean01.shtml
cmb0252 Provisional Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Very active trade deadline..... Wish the Twins were more active but that would require valuable trade pieces.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 No. I wouldn't give him a 3rd year unless it was a team option. I would go 3 years if the AAV isn't bad. 3/18 I would be ok with, I'd also be ok with 2/14 or 2/15. 3/24? Pass.

Pass.I suppose 3/18 isn't actually bad. I would probably give him that too. At that salary, he could be a trade candidate at the end of that deal as well, and the pay is low enough that you could justify him being a backup at that point.
