diehardtwinsfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Now that I've had some time to digest this a bit, I'm thinking that TR is pretty confident he's going to be moving KC today... That's my next prediction... Either KC or Suzuki moves yet today. Possibly both.
chopper0080 Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Ok...after forgeting about Nolasco and forgetting the compensatory guidelines, I am putting myself in timeout. Mike Sixel and big dog 2
whydidnt Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Also, I am excited to see how Vargas does though I expect he will struggle as Arcia has. He could very well struggle, but probably not like Arcia. Arcia can't control the strike zone and Vargas has been pretty good at that in the minors, something we couldn't say about Arcia. I still think Arcia will be a good player for the Twins, they just need to let him figure it out. TRex 1

Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Rumors among ESPN.com experts that Suzuki and Twins are close on long-term extension Damn. This day is all sorts of crazy. Gotta love deadline day.

drjim Provisional Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Beane is proud of building his teams primarily via trade, not from within. I suspect you have not read their write ups for his trades. BA isn't crazy, they know a big part of farm systems is for trades.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 And so it starts. Today could be a pretty interesting day. Stay tuned yall.
whydidnt Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Suzuki may not get traded today. It sounds like they started talking about an extension again today. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/07/twins-suzuki-again-discussing-extension.htmlHopefully this means that Suzuki found out teams weren't interested in dealing for him, and lowered his demands. If there isn't a market for him in the middle of his best season, with a small salary, who's going to give him 4 years 28 million or whatever it is he's looking for? I'm in favor of resigning him, at a fair contract, but if the deal is outrageous, I'll be disappointed.
drjim Provisional Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Something tells me that there may be more to the Nolaso situation with this. Milone is a good get, especially for Fuld, but he doesn't fit into the picture. The Twins have Nolaso, Pelfrey, Gibson, and Hughes starting next year without Milone. Add a very ready Meyer and May to this mix and too many guys. I'm wondering if the Twins have formally ruled out Pelfrey and Nolasco for next year, because otherwise this doesn't make much sense. Both Meyer and May wouldn't start the season in the rotation even if they hadn't gotten Milone. What this probably means is they probably won't go after a starter in free agency like I hoped they would.
Linus Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 I hope they sign him. Counting on Pinto is a big risk and they have nobody else remotely ready. With their potential rotation, the Twins could be decent next year.

If May/Meyer prove effective this Aug/Sept then I believe the Twins will absolutely give them a shot to win a spot out of spring training. However, is it prudent to "pencil" both of them in for 2015 at this time? Heck no!
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Who is the next to be dealt? The Twins might make more trades today than they have any other deadline.

His value was not as high as he might have thought, the Twins said take our reasonable two year extension now and let's move on. With the FA options out there and limited return (according to rumors), I don't have a huge problem with it.

He's a 30+ backup catcher on a contender. What rebuilding team extends that? He's an ok player and a nice guy, but if this happens, this is the Twins trying to put entertainment on the field instead of a winning team.
Gernzy Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 We almost have too many starting pitchers...didn't think I'd say that today.

Do expect him out of the bullpen in September (or perhaps earlier). May will get his audition soon enough. This is not to say they won't be on the opening day roster, but that won't be Plan A (or probably B or C) going into spring training.
James Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Who is the next to be dealt? The Twins might make more trades today than they have any other deadline.I'm guessing Alex Rios. If you were looking for the next Twins player to be traded... I have no idea.
Willihammer Provisional Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Evidently the Royals are looking for pitching but have set their sights a little higher than Correia. I wonder if TR were inclined to flip Milone, what the Royals would give?
twinsfan34 Provisional Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Beane's trades in and of themselves are not typically great and he's been fleeced on such trades as Matt Holiday and Carlos Gonzalez, in which he litterally had nothing in MLB production to show for those players. He's also spent $10M on Ben Sheets to not get a MLB pitch out of him. BUT, what Beane has done that very few GMs have done is not get 'nothing' ouf of his pending FA's or players going to Arbitration (more a Tampa Rays trait than an Oakland trait though). Let's hope the Twins can do the same with Suzuki, Willingham, Correia, etc. IF they're a player you want and can't sign to an extension or a player that a team may want, get something in return. That's the art of Beane. He minimizes his losses. He doesn't lose outright. Take in point with Lester - he's not going to resign him - or highly unlikely - however, he'll gladly lay down a $14.1M (or $15-ish) qualifiying offer for Lester. If he returns, one of the best playoff SPs in baseball is on the team for another playoff run, if not, sandwich pick in the 1st round of the 2015 draft.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 We almost have too many starting pitchers...didn't think I'd say that today. You mean too many mediocre starting pitchers. I had no doubt that I would say that. Mike Sixel and Dman 2
tobi0040 Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Rosenthal says "reasonable chance" an extension gets done today. I think TR has a trade in his back pocket, but not a huge haul and he thinks that is the best he will get. Now he is hoping to get a deal done or we will settle. IMO, either option beats keeping him sans extension.
drjim Provisional Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Who is the next to be dealt? The Twins might make more trades today than they have any other deadline. If the Suzuki rumors are true, Willy and Duensing are the only two options in my mind.
LaBombo Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 They did for Hicks.... and he had no indication he could handle it.What?!? 30ish AB's against legit MLB pitching isn't an indication of being ready?

He's an ok player and a nice guy, but if this happens, this is the Twins trying to put entertainment on the field instead of a winning team. The Twins still need a catcher going forward, external options for next year aren't great. If Pinto is legit he'll get his time. Unless you have great hope in Herrmann or Fryer.

James Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 If the Suzuki rumors are true, Willy and Duensing are the only two options in my mind.I don't think Duensing is traded until after Miller is traded. After he's gone, I'm thinking TR will get some calls. He may have already received some from teams just to get things in place so they can pull the trigger after Miller is off the table.
