With an off-day for Winder's next appearance, he could comfortably pitch out of the pen on, say, Sunday, and still egt a start in before the All-Star break, as could Archer.

Nick Gordon Is Quietly Filling the Royce Lewis Void
Rosterman replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He is that GREAT 26th player. Can he fill in fulltime at shortstop for a stint, that is the question. Who is this Tim Beckham tearing up AAA ball, by the way? -
Twins' Bullpen Needs Some Fresh Faces
Rosterman replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Henriquez was overmatched in AAA. And, yes, maybe he would be BEST suited as a bullpen arm. Start doing it at St. Paul, and elevate Varland and maybe even Canterino to AAA as starters. The Twins also have to make a hard decision on Balazovic. Another guy who MIGHT be a good guy to try as a middle relief (mop up arm) arm, even at the major league level similar to what the twins did with Santana. He has just been so...inconsistent. I do wish the Twins would give Strotman a shot in the majors. He can't be any worse than the arms they keep shuffling thru. See if he can adjust...fast, if he wants a major league run. Someone made a comment above about how being a starter means a bigger paycheck. I remember when the Twins demoted Frankie Ropdriguez to the bullpen and he threw a fit just for that reason. Two things: (1) a top flight reliever can make decent dollars and even have a long career (2) you don't get paid anything if you can't stay in the majors. Back to topic. No one mentioned Cano and his light's out at AAA. I guess he might be the next Anthony Slama? We will see. And Schulfer and Sisk may be the frewsh arms the Twins bullpen will finally call upon once then jettisoned aged veterans (Thielbar, Smith) or run thru more of the AAAA arms that they have stocked in the St. Paul bullpen.- 33 replies

Miguel Sanó’s Looming Return
Rosterman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well, they want to get their monies worth, including the buyout. I imagine as much time as needed in the minors. He can still be the fulltime DH if push comes to shove. I like Arraez at first, Kirilloff in left, and Miranda as the bench/spell guy. Larnach could prove a problem if he needs play But the minute Sano starts to hit, try and trade him. -
If ober comes back, I say the bullpen until someone really falters. Or, better yet, use him as an opener. Although I'm not sure if Archer's routine is to start a game. Some pitchers can't pitch releif without changing their whole routine, which doesn't always work.

Twins 2022 Minor League Transactions
Rosterman replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Twins signed MICHAEL BOYLE, a lefty relief arm out of the Dodgers system and assigned him to the FCL complez. Looks like he hasn't pitched in a couple of seasons. https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=boyle-001mic -
People keep forgetting that putting on his tights and cape is RANDY DOBNAK, who will be back and in full force to be reckoned with before the playoffs and will carry the Twins to a World Series Victory!

It Takes a Team to Blow a Game
Rosterman replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If a pitcher can't throw strikes when they have a 2+ run lead, you wonder what they are doing on the staff. You put the ball in play until your fielders screw up. And never give up. Cleveland is the eprfect example where they kept trying to win, and did in the end. You put pressure on the pitchers. You sacrifice to move the runner. You don't follow a preset pecking order for pitcher appearances. And don't bench two of your better bats in any game.- 11 replies

Cole Sands Finding Success Through Consistency

He could be that extra arm that can go 2-3 innings that the Twins need down the stretch. -
How do you solve a problem like Correa?
Rosterman commented on Doc Munson's blog entry in Fantasy GM
All the wins have invested in him is money, that was reclaimed from the Josh Donaldson contract. Already they are winners for 2022. 2023 and 2024 they could still come out waaaay ahead if Correa stays. A team would have to be pretty desparate to just take a short-term flyer. Of course, a contending team could be down their shortstop for a short period of time here at season's end. July 31 (or is it August 2) the date. Otherwise, a player just becomes a salary dump. No withholding them from the waiver wire. -
Guardians 5, Twins 3: We've Seen This Ending Before
Rosterman replied to David Youngs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Watching Archer and later Thornburg pitching, have never seen two guys missing the plate with the expression "please take me out coach, now" on their faces. I applaud the grit. But something wrong with pitching decisions. Yes, the ump may have called some balls wrong, but there were a lot no where near the strike zone!- 103 replies

And don't forget, the return of Randy Dobnak! Of couyrse, we might also be talking about names like Sands and Enlow and Canterino and Varland looking for work in 2023...if the Twins mnove on from Balazovic, Henriquez and Strotman.

If you can't trust a pitcher with a 3-run leda, why is Thornbvurg on the staff? And, Pagan, when all you have to do is throw strikes and put the ball in play, avoid the walk.....stop being wild pitch cute. Can the Twins start using Jax for more than 1 inning, please?

Pitching Coach Wes Johnson to Abruptly Leave Twins

Pitching Coach Wes Johnson to Abruptly Leave Twins
Rosterman replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Interesting. You would think collegiate ball would pretty much be winding down. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/06/twins-pitching-coach-wes-johnson-hired-as-lsu-pitching-coach.html Basically the Twins have duo coaches at both of their top levels in the minors. Virgil Vasquez or Cibney Bello could easily advance, as they have worked with a number of the pitchers in the system. Pete Larson and Dan Urbina are at AA Wichita. Justin Willard could also advance out of the complex. There's four coaches now with the Complex team, plus assistant Zach Bove. Be interesting to see what happens. -
Would Bringing Back Kyle Gibson Makes Sense?
Rosterman replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The only plus is that Gibson is pitching for a 2023 contract. Oh, and he would be making less money than the Twins paid him before they let him walk because arbitration would cost them too much. The Phillies traded three low-level prospects for Gibson, Kenndy, a prospect and cash. Not sure how much Gibson would actually be worth. But, I'm sure, a little bidding war might happen. He has had some short starts this season, too...as have had all pitchers in baseball. Would he really be the veteran presence the Twins need? Would explore, but then I ask "who would he replace on our pitching staff" and if he replaces someone like, say, Ober...is the tradeout for the best? Besides, who is Ober going to replace when he comes back?- 28 replies

Duffey didn't shine. Was okay. Can the Twins manufacture a run? When an arm is throwing strikes, you have to swing out of the box. Arraez, in his last at bat, let two great pitches for him to tackle just whiz by.

Polanco and Kepler can both be dangled as trade bait. But for now, they have to play everyday to keep any worth they have active. The joy is the Twins have otehr infield candidates, as well as outfield possibilities. Younger. But in the end, what are the players worth? What can Sano get you? Or Dufey? Or Thielbar? Maybe even offers for Bundy? Urshela is also a candidate to move. The Twins have to make hard 40-man decisions on Strotman, Balazovic (now a relief candidate?). Henriquez is still very young...should be back in AA ball. There seems to be depth. But what is needed to be competitive if they are going for the division. Is winning the division enough or do the Twins NEED to get far in the playoffs? At what point does baseball get back fans after a COVID season, a half-season without fans, and coming off a lockout that didn't benefit ownership or players.

Smeltzer has proven his worth as a starter. I'm sorry. Let Winder start regualrly at St. Paul. Build up innings. Curious to see who starts in the double-header. Give Winder extra days off, or use him in relief tomorrow or Saturday?

Twins Minor League Report (6/21): Matt Wallner is Surging
Rosterman replied to Steve Lein's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
So keep Wallner at AA and NOT put him on the 40-man. Play him all of 2023 at St. Paul and see if you feel the need to advance him as the heir, let's say, to Max Kepler? Or send him to AAA now and use Kepler as mid-season tradebait knowing Matt is in the wings for 2023?- 22 replies

Current bullpen is overworked. Prospects and arm tryouts are wonderful, if nmot competing for a division title. And bullpen arms need to be able to also pitch consecutive days. And one of the arms should only be that mop-up guy who can go long in blowout games.

3 Impacts of the 13-Pitcher Roster Limit
Rosterman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Going to be an interesting ride going forwards. Starters used to be limito 100 pitches. Some were pushed. The Twins problem is that 4/6ths of the staff haven't pitched 150 innings of late, so they need to work towards that. The good news is that with injuries and time off and short starts, the Twins shouldn't be worrying about that much anymore. You need a pitcher that can do multiple innings, go hru a lineup more than once. Right now, many managers don't want to see poitchers face a batter a third time. That was once the purpose of an opener,. so your main "weak" starter could face a lineup the third time, but starting with the weaker part of a batting order. But the key is that a starter SHOULD be able to go thru an order three times, period. Pitch at least six innings most of the time. Then you have at least one long relief guy (in the Twins case, Jax...who pitched 150+ innings last season) and another who only then needs three days before seeing more usage. But even using a relief pitcher back-to-back seems a thing of the past. And when you have NO closer, it gets real interesting. You also have that 8th arm...the mop-up guy, the pitcher on the fringe. Sadly, the Twins seem to be heding in the direction that they have three such names - all veterans at the moment - Duffey, Thielbar and Smith. Two should be gone, sooner rather than later. Happily, there are names like Moran, Cano and Megill in the wings. You also have Sisk and Schulfer getting exposure at AAA. Is it too soon to give up on, say, Hamilton. A bunch of arms were put into circulation this week, and none leaped out for pick-ups by anyone, it seems.- 23 replies
