The Bench (Its a huge team strength gone unnoticed)
Rosterman commented on Brandon's blog entry in Brandon's Blog
There are two factors when filling out a major league roster. A guy is a bench player, filling a hole on the roster. A guy is developing in the minors and is brought up to play when a position player goes down, because theya re the future. In this case, we HAD Royce Lewis briefly for Correa. In the first instance, the Twins have had a wide variety of names from Reboulet to Hocking to Adrianza who stepped into a starting role fulltime instead of the future (we could add names like Grossman, Cave and Refsnyder to that list). This year, the Twins bench has settled into GEM level. If you consider that the DH is basically a rotating spot, you have Hamilton (now) as the reserve catcher, Miranda at first or third, Gordon at second/short/outfield, and Garlick and Celestino in the outfield. In reality, if ANY of the bench players start, whomever they are replacing would probably be the DH. Now that will all change when Sano returns, and there are 10 million reasons he has to play. Best at DH. No need to put him ever in the field. Of course, one of the above names will have to depart, and picture it will be between Garlick or Celestino, although IF the Twins would like Miranda to play third/first everyday...just maybe he will go. But everyone has been hitting Sano's weight. So...... A decent luxury for the Twins to have. Especialy with other players being versatile to play elsewhere (Polanco at short, Arraez at second or third, Kirilloff at first). The only BIG change is to keep Sanchez primarily at catcher, and never DH. Can't wait to see if Hamilton has anything in his arsenal. -
Twins Select Brooks Lee #8 Overall
Rosterman replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Be interesting to see where he plays. Complex or Ft. Myers right away? Maybe? Martin jumped right to AA ball with Toronto, and if he was doing a tad better could've been at AAA right now at mid-season. The joy of having the Mussels at the FM complex is that you can get oevrcoached down there. -
90 games into the season and now, the All-Star break. The rotation, rather than stablizing, has fallen apart. Even with six (and soon to be seven) arms to choose from. The bullpen seems a shambles. Walks. Home runs. No defined roles. And the Twins one-hit in the batting end. Line-up construction? Not watching enough video? Too hot to play today? Yet the Twins remain in first place with a lead, and 50 wins. We get to NOT follow box scores for the week!

Celestino is one of those guys that you think could be a standout centerfielder with a tad more development. He doesn't hit for the power, isn't overly flashy in the field, isn't stealing bases. He hits singles and can move from first to third. But is he better than the Pridie, Grossman, Cave, whatever? Is he wrth his most right now as a potential starter for a team (i.e. Oakland) and if push comes to shove, is there someone else the heir apparant to Buxton when he stops playing center, sadly sooner rather than later. Gordon is that super sub. At some point he prices himself off the team. Would a team trade specifically for him? Probably not. Again, his career is in his hands, how he plays, and every year he will be fighting for a contract. At some point he will egt signed by a rebuilding team and be given an everyday chance to fly high. It will be intresting to see where the Twins go with outfielders. Matt Wallner is on the cusp. Michael Helman could be the backup. The Twins actually have too many spare change outfielders in Garlick, Celestino, Cave, Contreras right now. Kepler looks like he could be a movable piece. larnach has potential to be a tradechip. Depends on what you do with Kirilloff and Miranda and, down-the-line Chrostian Encarcion-Strand. And then we have the Sano elephant in the room. If the guy comes back and hits, he throws the whole 1B/DH situation into a mess if the Twins decide to keep him for one more season.

BEN HELLER!? https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=heller000ben Sometimes wish the Twins would actually spend more time trading pieces and working towards fixing any holes in the system (and major league roster) for real than signing cast-offs. Yes, there is sometimes gold to be found, but still............ Hope BEN can comeback, stronger than ever. The Ft. Myers fountain of wonder waters may only be a myth, though.

Unfortunately, they DO have to find a 40-man roster spot for him as he can walk from the Twins as a minor league free agent. Is he an option in the shortstop situation? DO the Twins keep Palacios and Beckham if Corea is gone for sure?

3 Options for Josh Winder in the Second Half
Rosterman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Somehow I don't see Bundy or Archer getting bumped from the rotation unless the Twins relase them or trade them. At best, Archer is shut down at some point, as the Twins have an option for him for next season. I would like to see both Ober and Winder get regular starts at St. Paul. As well as see Canterino and Varland move to the Saints. Have the Saints totally switch Balazovic, Sands and Henriquez to the bullpen to see if there is salavation for keeping those arms on the 40-man roster come next season. But it also means a lot of roster movement at St. Paul. Winder and Ober will continue to prove that they are able to pitch at the major league level and will see action come September when the Twins will be looking for fresher arms, be it in the rotation or the bullpen. Remember, Maeda might be back (after an extensive rehab in the minors). And Dobnak may be the guy who pitches the Twins to a World Series title, right? -
If you trade for Sano, do you take on his remaining contract for this season? You also have to be willing to pick up the option (or pay the option out) for next season. Why not just wait and let him become a free agent. Or see if the Twins release him come August. Sadly, if he becomes playable, the Twins will have to roster him and play him as they have $10 million reasons to try and get soemthing out of him this season, unless he is just so terribly horrible........

Has Tyler Duffey Turned a Corner for the Twins?
Rosterman replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He has to pitch if he wants a job in 2023...anywhere. Be interesting to see how his off-season pans out. But if the Twins felt Rogers was overpaid, what does that say about Duffey? But, who knows. He might become the temporary closer the Twins need!- 22 replies

Week in Review: Pitching Plunge
Rosterman replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
40-34. They gave up a lot of runs, but also scored a lot. You gotta love this game of baseball! -
I was just thinking "What if the Twins were in 4th or 5ht place? Who would be available from the bullpen and what would they get in return?" Caleb Thielbar. If situational lefties still existed, maybe. The fact that he IS left-hnaded would help. Emilo Pagan. That he has anotehr season of control is a plus. The cost of that season, questionable. Tyler Duffey. Potential free-agent. So hot and cold you don't want to turn on the water. Cotton, Minaya, Thornburg. All could've been had with a simple claim and eating salary owed. None were able to find a free-agent contract buyer. Makes Chi Chi Gonzalez look like a diamond, I guess. Joe Smith. No trade value if he can't come off the IL list in time. Maybe the Twins just cut him in August and another eam grabs him and eats remaining salary. Don't see anyone knocking down the doors for a Twins pitcher. The best the Twins could hopeful is a potential minor league free agent, or a player that will have to be protected on the 40-man come season's end, but not by the trading team. You wonder how the Twins have gotten and remained where they are today, with so many impossible trade pieces in their own bullpen.

If going by average, down for most position players. We think he is hurt, but then he hits triples, scores runs and makes fantastic plays. Right now, the face of the franchise! But if homers were everything, then we should be excited about the potential return of Sano!

Who will Sano replace on the 26-man roster is the question?

Around the AL Central (7/8): Breathing Room at the Top
Rosterman replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You gotta admit that Twins baseball is exciting...as it is frustrating. Who thought the Twins would lead the division for the majority of the season and be in first place at the halfway point? I sure didn't. And we are watching some exciting growth from a whole slew of prospects, be it Ryan or Duran, Kirilloff or Miranda. We saw futrue hope in Lewis. Now just have to put together a team!- 5 replies

It's furstrating. But it IS the game of baseball. Players have streaks at bat. Starters do their job of have a meltdown (although experienced ones usually "gut" their way thru innings). I was hoping the rotation would be pitching deeper than they are, and pushing or surpassing that 100-pitch mark (forget about third or fourth time thru the order). Considering we will have 7 rotation arms when Ober returns, and only room for five! We have a closer, finally, in Duran...if the manager will trust him, and if the team actually gives him opportunities to close. But there are at least four arms in the pen that are...dare I say...worthless. I don't picture a return of Coulombe and Smith as refreshing. Alcala has been gone waaaay to long. Do I trust Cano to come up after a stay back in AAA? Is Ian Hamilton for real? Are Sisk and Schulfer hungry enough to shine, knowing it is pitch or bust? Thank goodness for a weak division, although the Twins are/were in the top three in the league for wins...remember that when talking about a division weaker than any other.

Who is Part of the Twins' Long-Term Core Four?
Rosterman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Right now there is a solid group of players that could be with the Twins the next 3-5 years. The ones you mention plus Jeffers, Kirilloff, Royce Lewis, Miranda, larnach, Kirilloff. Add in names like Canterino, Winder, Wallner. You might not find much in the way of bettering a team as you head towards the future. The question is more how to work in other promising players, when to part with others - like do the Twins part this year or next with Polanco and Kepler. I would love to see Duran stay healthy and be the Twins closer for 6-7-9-12 years, like the Yankees great. Is something like that possible? Affordable?- 84 replies

First off, gotta trust your starter. They can go five and six innings. Please. Moran in 9th. Duran in 10th. Don't use closer unless you have the lead. Why are the Twins ONE of the teams that refuse to advance that guy standing on second to third, especially if they are capable of almsot walking to third. You pinch hit Jeffers, too. Pagan, Jax, Thielbar, Megil, Duran, Moran.....any rhyme or reason? You got two dynamtie lefties...bring in Thielbar for the fifth, Moran for the 8th. I won't fauly bullpen arms for giving up hits or homers...it happens. The White Sox did the same as the Twins. But.....I can't figure out the bullpen usage. Never, ever, zilch...except that the front office didn't think Rogers could be the closer.
