  1. It would be huge if this is the start of something big for Moran. The suddenly crowded rotation has to have someone who can perform in the bullpen, right? Archer, in a regular piggyback role (every three or four days, and whoever the starter is gets a short day?) Winder or Bundy or Ober, if the innings start to pile up?
  2. This article is a great synthesis of a lot of the thoughts out there. Well written and compelling. Thank you!
  3. If it were TK or Gardy managing, I would be happy that the Twins have a 13th position player that doesn't require much playing time and has a defined, and definitely limited, role that he fills well, even if that role requires some versatility. With Rocco managing, Twins fans have to hope that every guy on that bench can play almost every day, because he probably will. Which isn't necessarily a knock on Rocco, but it is probably not a role you want for Gordon. All that said, with Lewis injured, even if Kirilloff comes back, Gordon is still the best 13th man the Twins can field right now.
  4. I can see keeping one of the late inning arms in reserve, but *three*?
  5. Somebody tell Sano about this. He needs the same adjustment.
  6. There are a lot of bodies that should produce. But not a surplus that are producing. Buxton and Polanco are playing hurt and underperforming, and Jeffers should probably get some minor league time to get right. With several guys who can play CF and 2B and take over Sanchez' DH at bats, sounds like that solves the crunch short term. And that's all you need to decide on for now. But you have to play the hot hand for now. If we can afford to rest Polanco and Buxton while doing so, all the better. Just make it real rest, and give those ABs to guys with a future in your lineup, not Gordon and Garlick.
  7. No dispute with the rankings so far, but it would be fun if Winder, Lewis, and Celestino make this an epic battle.
  8. Unknown, but pretty sure he outshines Rosario in all other aspects of playing LF. It is great to have 3 center fielders again.
  9. Besides the excellent question about the opposition, the other question is what will happen when hitters remember than line drives have a better BABIP than fly balls, and they become willing to sacrifice power for it? The outfield defense still matters, but will these pitchers still be able to induce futile contact?
  10. Moreover, the analysts probably only saw the Dodgers series, so...
  11. Definitely looks like an opportunity for both Miranda and Arraez to play every day.
  12. The next opening on the MLB roster will be when we have to add a 13th position player. *If* we are ok with Celestino being our 4th outfielder, which is looking better, we have a bench of Sanchez, Gordon, and Celestino, with our main DH being Arraez. So, a catcher, middle infielder, center fielder, and corner infielder. We could add a corner outfielder. If Kirilloff is ready, great. If not, who do we bring up for that? Do we give that spot back to Garlick? Or, if 5th outfielder seems a little excessive, maybe we go with another infielder, so Lewis. But then he won't have playing time unless Gordon and Urshela have theirs cut. Good problems to have options. We can wait out injuries to Sano and Kirilloff, and we don't have to rush top prospects. We can even develop likely MLB bench players like Celestino and Gordon appropriately. I guess that's my question: who do we groom next for the bench?
  13. In terms of age, ceiling, and current performance, Jax seems the one to keep over Stashak. I have to believe he is permanently in the pen now
  14. Is Nick Gordon our best fourth outfielder? With Arraez available to spell infielders, maybe that's the best way to play it for now, and send Celestino and Larnach and Garlick out when Kirilloff is back. Especially if we only have to have 12 position players until late May. 13th player is probably Larnach or Celestino, pushing Gordon to the end of the bench
  15. Just curious whether Ian Hamilton will ever get a shot or do anything with it. Also, can Danny Coulombe climb out of the invisible-last-guy role in Rocco's bullpen rotation?
  16. I can look at the percentile stats for Sano and explain his dismal performance without invoking bad luck: you only get three strikes. How's that for statistical analysis?
  17. I wonder what Carew's launch angle was on bunts? They all seemed to roll to a stop exactly halfway between the catcher and the third baseman, and just on the grass. I cry when I see players with speed hit into the shift.
  18. I thought I remembered him having a history of good AVG in the past. But mostly, I have the same problem as Rocco: I have to put nine bodies out there? Ugh
  19. Time to try the all-batting-average lineup? DH Arraez, C Sanchez, 1B Miranda, 2B Polanco, 3B Urshela, SS Correa, LF Larnach, CF Buxton, RF Austin Martin Is Kurt Suzuki still playing? *laughs* *sobs*
  20. Zero hits, 12 strikeouts. The whole Saints lineup looks ready for Target Field.
  21. He should be the regular DH, with any rest coming against lefties. For those who say he doesn't have enough power, I would remind them of his age and experience. Take a look at Edgar Martinez' first four years in the league, for example. I think adequate power will join exceptional on base skills (which matter more: look at wOBA or wRC, not OPS) as he ages and sees regular playing time, and keeps his knees off the field. Unfortunately, Sanchez also deserves more at bats than Sano or Kirilloff right now.
  22. I was looking for the answer in 2006, and found that Santana and Mauer combined for 14.5 fWAR, so I guess pitchers were not included in this exercise. Mauer and Morneau combined for 9.6 fWAR in 2006, 9.8 in 2008, 11.7 in 2009, and 10.7 in 2010
  23. Maybe Stashak to the 60-day IL to make room for Garlick? Also, did anyone notice that we might have 8 starterish pitchers on the MLB roster? Gray, Bundy, Archer, Ryan, Ober, Paddack, Winder, and Duran. They could piggyback as four pairs, and that's the rotation. AFAICT, they are all good candidates to limit workload
