    But it is cynical because the plan could actually be to start him out as a DH at the beginning of the season with the plan on working him into CF more and more as the season progresses. That plan could easily change if his knee, or something else, doesn't allow that plan to come to fruition.

    I don't recall either of them saying that, but they may have. That may have been the plan initially, but it changed along the way. That doesn't mean that they were bs'ing us. Circumstances may have changed what they wanted to do. That's not only their prerogative, but it also happens all of the time. And if Archer expected short outings, then that clearly was the plan for him. Nothing controversial about it.

    There's more to this discussion than "Bundy and Archer killed the rotation". There were plenty of people around here that were calling for piggybacking one or both of those two, whether with each other or someone like Ober. IIRC, Archer was signed knowing that they'd keep him around 4 innings an outing. Injuries played a pretty key role in the discussion as well.

    I was actually having this very conversation last week. One of the points the two of us in the conversation made was that the rotation is constructed better to go deeper into games. Between Bundy, Archer and the injuries, last year's staff simply wasn't good enough to go consistently deeper. They were fortunate to ride that as well as they did for as long as they did.

    Logical choice in my mind. He's not only earned it, in my opinion, but he was also the shiny acquisition over the off-season.

    I like this game better when I'm standing at the counter at Arby's... But if I'm standing at the counter at a baseball game, I have to go with a 6-man rotation or piggyback Ober/Maeda as @chpettit19suggested.

    Agreed. Health is probably on top of that list of things needing to go right. I like them for 85 wins.

    Even if the offense isn't an issue, 92 still seems on the optimistic side. Possible? Certainly. Likely? I don't think so. Agreed on hammering the under on that prediction!

    He hasn't pitched in so long, this shouldn't have come as a shock. Besides learning how the new elbow works, the rust from such a long layoff will take some time to break free. Guys like Verlander coming back strong are rare, so this really shouldn't come as a shock.

    MLB announced yesterday that there will be some tweaks to how the pitch clock penalties are enforced. They come from player feedback and they seem like common sense tweaks to me. Changes include: - A illegal shift challenge can only be used if the play is directly tied to the player fielding the ball. - Extra time will be added for a malfunctioning PitchCom device, but no time will be added if the pitcher simply forgets it in the dugout between innings. - The field timer will delay starting the clock if the hitter is not only knocked down by a pitch, but if he takes an aggressive swing causing him to fall down or lose his helmet. - Hitters will also be able to determine when to start the clock if he uses his allotted timeout. - Pitchers will get extra time to return to the mound if they back up a play at home, 1B or 3B. - Catchers will receive additional time if an inning ends when he's on base, at bat or in the on-deck circle. - Batboys and batgirls will also be instructed to have a player's bat ready if he's due up to lead off an inning. https://www.mlb.com/news/mlb-clarifies-2023-rule-changes What are your thoughts?
