  1. Even if they get an extra win or two out of Milone, what exactly does that get you? At least with youth, you're giving them MLB experience. Giving innings to Milone is a waste of time. Putting him back on the 40 man roster to get him those innings is misguided even if he is the best option to make changes in the rotation. He's not going to be a part of the future, the youth is. This team needs to realize what they are.
  2. I'd be okay with that depending on what the Twins get in return and if it eases the logjams. Sometimes those things just need to happen.
  3. It's for this reason I tend to rip Molitor more for their lack of fundamental situational awareness. He's going to want things playing out a certain way given the circumstances of the game. That is a bigger issue in my opinion. Does this team lack general fundamental skills? Yes, but for me that is more of a knock on the organization as a whole rather than a single minor league manager.
  4. The only thing I'd change with this would be that I'd like to see all of those guys up in July. At this point however, a full fledged youth movement would be welcome. That would at least be a display of some sort of plan.
  5. This. So much this. The way the "utes" have been treated is asinine. Either call them up and let them play or leave them down in AAA to play. IMO, this reeks of lack of direction and will only extend the losing.
  6. I agree with most of this. The mismanagement of Kepler and Polanco have irked me more than anything else this season. Meyer's situation is right up there as well. I just don't see TR using the Arcia's and Polanco's of the world as currency like this. It's unfortunate because they don't seem to have a spot in the future.
  7. This has been my biggest gripe the past two seasons. There appears to be no plan. When this team was supposed to be on the uptick with young talent, they refused to play them. This year, they bring in the likes of Ryan Sweeney and Carlos Quentin that did nothing but take away PT for young players to gain some experience. Yes, ST experience, but experience nonetheless. They've been stuck between rebuilding with a youth movement and signing veterans to try to contend resulting in a plan with no clear direction. Now that this season is a mess, last weeks' moves and Molitor's reluctance to play the youth on the roster make it clear that a youth movement isn't going to happen. That is what troubles me the most.
  8. But wasting talent is the one thing this team is doing well at this year! They're on a prolific pace.
  9. Time to put his face on the side of a milk carton!
  10. Exactly. Pick a direction and go with it. Doing both (or neither) isn't going to get you anywhere.
  11. I'm generally one to say that managing is overrated - not unimportant, but overrated. Jim Leyland once said, "I give the players all of the answers to the test, but they still have to take that test." That being said, I'm pretty alarmed at the level of unpreparedness and stupid baseball shown this year. Much of that is on the players, but the coaching staff needs to get these guys preparing the correct way if they can't figure it out themselves.
  12. I agree, but I didn't want him down there to begin with. If he struggles in the bugs, so be it. Then send him down.
  13. No, but they could give Kepler a real chance to show what he can do. While Buxton is in AAA, that would give them an extended period to play. I don't feel that he should have been sent back down to begin with, yet anyway. I'm not a fan of how he was handled while up with the big league club.
  14. If this team were say, 20-8, then depth would be a decent idea. This team needs more than depth. This team needs a front line player to be in CF. This move does nothing for the club. It's just another retread that is eating up a roster spot and playing time of a young player that they could be getting a good and extended look at instead.
  15. While I agree with this, the issue I have is that they weren't even given an opportunity to show what they can do. They gained nothing and lost playing time. I don't see how that is beneficial at any angle.
  16. Well written piece. Even though I'd prefer both Molitor and Ryan be replaced, mid-season is not the time to do it. I just don't think it would help anything especially at the GM level. I just worry that the mismanagement of players will continue. That's my big concern.
  17. As far as I'm concerned, he's already admitted to that. Or at least proven it.
  18. The issue I've had with bringing Milone back was that it was blocking younger talent. It's not as though he was even a #3 starter, so why block younger pitchers in the organization? That gets back to my rant of being stuck between trying to compete with mediocre veterans and trying to get the younger players experience. The move just made no sense to me.
  19. The easy answer for me is that I can't stay positive when it comes to this season. I was extremely disappointed with the moves (or lack thereof) during the offseason. I'm not really overly concerned with how the younger players are playing, but I'm very concerned about how sloppy the team is. I love baseball and still love going to games, but it's hard for me to remain positive about where this team is currently. The mistakes and the dumb baseball play drives me nuts. With as much as Molitor thrived on the little things as a player and the way he supposedly pushes for those as a manager, this team doesn't do them well at all. Even as a season ticket holder, I'm already finding myself enjoying the games because its baseball rather than enjoying watching the Twins play. It's frustrating in that regard. I've been more patient with this process than anyone I know and my friends are alarmed to learn of my frustration. The record itself isn't really my biggest issue, its that I feel that the young players are being mismanaged. I came into the season expecting very little in regards to record, but I wanted to see the younger players develop and I don't really feel that some of them are getting the chance to do so.
  20. Great post. They seem to be stuck in the middle of a youth movement and still trying to sign veterans with little to no value - which irritates the heck out of me. Mauer isn't going anyway, that's pretty obvious. He can't be traded and he doesn't really deserve to be cut either. He's not a 3 hitter anymore and I don't care what position he plays because it's meaningless at the plate. I would have moved Mauer to RF instead of Sano and played Sano at one of the corners before I moved him to the OF. I liked the Nolasco signing and still think it was a good move that simply didn't work out. It happens, but they need to move on. He's blocking younger talent that deserve to be on the roster and gives the team a higher chance of winning in the long term. Pelfrey was in the same scenario. Didn't mind the initial signing, but hated that they brought him back. They showed too much willingness to keep throwing him out there when you have kids that could be learning how to win at the major league level instead. That's what I'm talking about being stuck in the middle. Either stick with aging vets or go with a full out youth movement with a few veteran backups to help guide the way, not something in between like they're doing now.
  21. I feel this way anytime a position is referenced in regards to offense. None of that matters if other positions fill the role.
  22. To me Mauer doesn't really profile as a utility player. I'm sure that he could learn to play multiple positions, but I don't know how effective he'd be at them. Before the emergence of Hicks, I was a big proponent of moving Mauer to RF, moving Plouffe to 1B, and Sano playing 3B (or visa versa with Plouffe/Sano). With Hicks emerging, that wouldn't be a fit anymore either. I think you almost have go to ST and see what you have for DH hitters and whether Sano can handle 3B at the MLB level. Then you have to decide what to do with Plouffe. I'd hate to see him go, but I'm not sure what else you do if you have younger pieces that are capable. I'd say this conundrum is a good problem to have. I'm also in agreement with Linus. He's not going anywhere.
