  1. Based on the esteem in which he was (is) held by those that were looking to move him, I would have expected 2 prospects neither of which would have been ready by 23.
  2. So here's a fun exercise. Much talk a year (and more than a year) ago about the wisdom of moving Buxton. Where would this team be today without him?
  3. Sox bullpen isn't better than the ours. Should be but it's not.
  4. If we get one game for every "expert" who makes a prediction without putting his name on it, we win the division by at least 8 games.
  5. 3 to 4 of these guys will likely go in the next week. Hopefully those that don't can contribute sooner rather than later. The other lesser thought of possibility would be moving some guys already on the 40. Not sure who in either case though. Will also need a 40 man spot for big leaguers acquired.
  6. Actually, you DID call them cowards. And whether we get Montas or Castillo, I'd STILL try to make other moves. There are probably going to be a dozen to a dozen and a half teams in contention and looking to be buyers. Saying that if we, or any of the other dozen plus contenders, have no shot if they don't get Montas or Castillo is preposterous. Call the common man. Kris Bryant didn't bring a trophy to the Giants last year. Craig Kimbrel didn't bring one to the south side. Jose Berrios didn't bring a ring to Canada. Nor did Brad Hand. Cesar Hernandez didn't take the south siders to the promised land. Joey Gallo didn't bring one to the big apple and now could be had for an apple. Eddie Escobar didn't bring one to beer town. Kendall Graveman & Rafael Montero didn't bring one to H-Town. Braves made a bunch of "B" moves and won the title. I'd be just fine with a similar result. Maybe they'd sell Eddie......
  7. Actually the 87 Twins made a number of moves that year, many of them just before the season. Al Newman, Dan Gladden, Jeff Reardon, Senor Smoke, Tom Nieto all added shortly before the season. Sal Butera added in May. Traded for Joe Niekro in June, Steve Carlton in July and the Baylor trade on September 1. 91 Twins also made their big moves before the season. Chilli Davis, Jack Morris. Just for the record they also had a 10 game losing streak that year. They may not have been a "middling" team that year but NOBODY thought they had a snowball's chance in hell of getting by the Jays that year and even less chance of them beating the Pirates if they did. Can't call them out for not making deadline moves when they won the damn World Series.
  8. It's not a matter of what they do first. If they need two starters & two relievers go get them all. If you screw around getting other things first and run out of time to get this kind of get you still end up short of what is needed.
  9. Jump on it. Key words being "very little in prospect capital." That's what we normally do and the return is typically "very little." This is an opportunity to take an all in type of shot at a low prospect capital shot. Hell yes.
  10. No trade. You got him to compete this year. You're in position to do so. Maybe you lose him in the off-season, maybe you don't. He didn't cost you anything in terms of player capital. If you have a good run maybe you figure out a way to keep him. Trading him for prospects sets you back years. A year ago we traded our best pitcher for AA prospects who to this day remain AA prospects. You brought Correa in to take a shot. Take a shot.
  11. Plan on seeing at least two of those five leave if we make trades that will put us in position to make noise in the post-season.
  12. "This is a solidly middle AL team" are words that aptly described the 1987 & 1991 Twins. You're not "taking shots" because you're afraid. You're "taking shots" to win. Not taking shots is what you do because you're afraid you're going to give up something that you'll wish you still had down the road.
  13. If we're gonna get something worth getting we're likely gonna have to give something we won't care to give.
  14. Ya gotta take a shot at some point. Fear is not a position to be operating from.
  15. Your hitting skills competition idea sounds a little bit like hitting against the shift and we all know guys don't like that.
  16. Actually, getting Montas without giving up one (or more) of Larnach, Kiriloff, Miranda or Balazovic is a steal. Doubt the A's would bite though.
  17. You're right. The problem is too many guys NOT hitting the fences. Sano can do that. Also might want to keep in mind that any trade for a SIGINIFICANT pitcher may well include one of Kiriloff, Larnach or Miranda. Gotta give something to get something. Opens a hole in the batting order.
  18. This team's been shut out more than any club in the bigs. You don't move on from a guy who could be a difference maker.
  19. Actually, Kepler's played 20% of his career games in CF so I'd say he's done more than just fill in in a pinch. If one of Celestino or Gordon would get the right return, I'd be just fine with Kepler in CF when Buxton's not and Kirilloff in RF, especially with Sano nearing a return and a lot of talk about being in the running to get Josh Bell's bat down the stretch. Contending teams can never have too many bats or arms.
  20. The comparison was to 4th place Toronto, now 3 games over .500
  21. I'd love to know the last time the Twins were in a division strong enough to be in 4th place at 4 games over .500..
