2024 Minnesota Twins Positional Battles: The 5th Starter
Eephus replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
DeSclafani having sustained effectiveness seems like a long shot, but definitely worth a look. If he's 100% healthy and moderately effective, he'll get the nod. Then it seems at least 1 of the 5 starters will have some kinda health issue and that's when Varland will get his chance. Varland seems hellbent on being a starter. He's got some Sonny Gray bulldog in him. Hope they give him a real shot. I always figure they know more than I do considering I'm not even sure who's in the picture at the beginning of the article. Just curious...why does TD include photo credits but often/usually not say who is in the photo?- 46 replies

Twins Daily 2024 Top Prospects: #9 Brandon Winokur, SS/CF

He projects to be the next Aaron Judge...size wise any way. -
Pablo cruised. The Lopez/Gray 1-2 is looking so strong right now.

If Correa had actually been backing up Polanco on the play, there's no out either. In the post game, dazzleman said Correa was already headed over to backup, but if you watch the replay Correa is standing by 2nd base when the ball is missed by Polanco. Great athletic play though, wow.

Game Thread: Reds 9/18 5:40 cdt
Eephus replied to Richie the Rally Goat's topic in Archived Game Threads
I haven't carefully followed the whole thread, but players are missing more games, especially pitchers. https://www.mlb.com/news/pitch-timer-effect-on-mlb-injuries#:~:text=The MLB injury rate has been rising for decades.&text=They got hurt%2C anyway.,noted a milestone in 2022. -
I'll tell you who else has stuck to the process for better or worse -- Gallo. Dig in with left foot -- scratch, scratch, take a couple sort of swings, do an upper body twitch forward back stretchy thing, deep breath in through a crinkled nose, exhale. Strikeout 42% of the time and hope the bat and ball collide on occasion. Repeat. Results as you say somewhat better than last year but unlikely better than a good number of other players. Sure seems like banking a the ball-bat collision happens at the crucial one or two times is no plan at all.

Is Byron Buxton Turning into Giancarlo Stanton?
Eephus replied to Hans Birkeland's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
His slide seemed to follow Correa calling him the best player in the world last May or so. He was hotter than heck for a few weeks and then he's the best player in the world and swinging for the fences. I also wonder what effect losing James Rowson as batting coach has had on his mental and mechanical approach. -
Buxton I am at least holding out hope he can become a legit MLB hitter again. I'm becoming obsessed with Gallo as the one to blame. Since getting traded to the Yankees in 2021, he's been about a .700 OPS hitter with 40% strikeouts in about 700 ABs. Who could possibly think he is going to get any better than he is now. To quote my smarter brother, This is who he is.

Right now Wallner's offensive floor seems like it would be comfortably higher than what can be realistically expected from Gallo. There is no reason to think Gallo is better than what he has shown so far this season. This is who he is.

I liked the at bats in the 7th inning. Clutch Kiriloff hit. Somewhat dismayed when Witgren then went walk, Hbp, walk and up comes Vazquez. First pitch ball. Vazquez then swings at a pitch out of the strike zone. 😒

If memory serves, the Sox base running collision was somewhat avoidable and Buck ran into the fielder. With Byron, it does seem like one way or another he's going to get hurt. Hit by pitches, slides (seems like every time he slides he hesitates to get up), dives, walls, legging out a triple, swinging, outfield collisions. It gets to a point where it is certainly more than bad luck.

Larnach's hit looked like it could have been caught. Gallo's obviously should have been caught. Great to see a W today.

My analogy with all those strikeouts was going to be that, just like the sunnies under your dock, they'll bite on anything. Instead, today was more like fishing for muskies....sooner or later if you keep casting (watching) something big will come along

🤮 mostly. Also: 1. Lewis rocks. 2. Even a diehard Twins fan like me paying Fubo bucks is going to drop "watch the twins" as a top of mind priority with an offense like this. They really suck offensively. If the batting coach lasts the year I personally will buy every* Twins fan a Tom Brunansky Topps folder at Ax Man (*while supplies last). 3. Duran's a stud and I don't care about the homer from a performance perspective. 4. Uff da.

Astros 5, Twins 1: Twins Fail to Launch in Space City
Eephus replied to Steven Trefz's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I didn't watch hardly any games last season (radio), but this year quite a few. I agree with you that Correa's approach seems too aggressive but his walk/strike out ratio this year is pretty consistent with his career numbers. His babip is .062 (.252 this year/.315 over 9 seasons) below his career average. He also leads the league in GDP. Maybe he's just somewhat snakebit so far this year.- 45 replies

Call me crazy, but does Bremer's play by play ever seem a split second ahead of the what the viewer sees? Like on that double steal I swear he said, "Castro is going to score" a fraction of a second before it was obvious he was going to be safe. Once in a while it seems like this happens on a foul ball. "Fouled back" he'll say the same exact time there's contact made. Or as I said call me crazy.

Any time +50% of the outs are from strikeouts it's probably going to be a tough game to watch. After Sunday's flailfest, I needed a night off. Those pitchers aren't exactly Roger Clemens/ Nolan Ryan. It looks like Correa is taking higher quality at bats. Maybe that will trickle through the the lineup. Done 0 analysis, but watching guys swing and miss at low and inside sliders is gets old.

What Is the AL Central Most Like?
Eephus replied to RandBalls Stu's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Plain burger is a really good start, but it is more like a generic fast food chain with 5 things on the menu and no condiments other than ketchup. And the soda fountain has Walmart Great Value branded pop. -
The Polanco and Solano at bats today with the bases loaded should be in hitting textbooks across the land. Did he even throw a strike that inning until Farmer flied out? I'm no expert and those guys are both decent hitters but to quote Buck Showalter, "Ya gotta control your want to." I think back to Randy Dobnak pitching against the Yankees in the playoffs and he kept throwing breaking pitches a few inches out of the zone that Tigers and Royals and lesser teams chased all year long. And the Yankees just watched them. Remember thinking that if the Yankees don't chase and we do we've got no chance. Simple concept but obviously hard to execute.

Twins Minor League Report (5/11): Royce Returns
Eephus replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Did anyone notice that the Frisco RoughRiders had 7 errors vs the Wind Surge? That's what you might expect if a group of actual RoughRiders played some softball after a long day of breaking broncos.- 24 replies
