    Probably. No concern here. This would be his final spring start and he's already lathered up from the WBC.

    I guess I agree with you - my pick two would be Mahle/Ober, although Maeda probably has the least health concerns of those three. I wish Maeda would have been permitted to make a couple of short late-season starts last year. The latest example I found of a starting pitcher in their early-mid 30s coming back from a Tommy John was Jason Vargas, and Vargas did ok for a short time (half a season), but then kind of kicked around for a couple more seasons before retiring. I mean, I wish I was 30 again. 🙂. But competing against 20 somethings puts a 30 something like Maeda at a disadvantage unless his command is absolutely pinpoint.

    That's what I think, too. However, if Polanco has a mutual player option, or some other obscure rule comes into play, then Polanco could be gone.

    I have no freakin' clue why the Twins aren't putting screens in front of the mound in intrasquad scrimmages. EDIT: let me rephrase that: Shouldn't the Twins be using screens in front of the mound in back field stuff? It would be nice to know more about Polanco's vesting option for 2024. If Polanco does not reach 550 PA and therefore becomes a free agent after this season, then I actually think it's in Polanco's best interest, and also the team's best interest, to let Polanco take it slow with his knee. Let him get healthy and play really well for the last 4 or 5 months down the stretch as he heads for free agency. The fans win, too. Granted, the Twins do desperately need Polanco's bat early in the season.

    Thanks. It's pretty unfortunate. A poster raises a question about the Twins not playing their regular starters, and it becomes reframed as "no team is playing their exact starting lineup" which is also basically wrong, as I showed by posting the Yankees lineup. As if teams do not change their lineups throughout the season or rotate their 7 and 8 guys as platoons or utility players. Or maybe they were denying that those first six Yankees were regulars? I'm not going to try to understand it. In any case, they are wrong about Twins not playing their regulars, too, because if you look at the Twins lineup today it looks pretty close to what the Twins will be fielding on opening day anyway-- except for Buxton, who we all hope starts in Center. This is really all about Buxton, anyway. Anyway, today's Twins lineup, looks like regulars (except Buxton and Miranda) to me: Solano DH Correa SS Farmer 3B Kepler RF Taylor CF Garlick LF Gallo 1B Jeffers C Gordon 2B Also, welcome back Nick Gordon. We were originally told it was a high mild to medium high sprain. If anyone else should be working out on back fields, it's Nick Gordon, in my opinion.

    Maybe this is the year Buxton plays the entire season. If not, I'd like to see him come into camp next year with the mindset and determination of being an everyday player, like 150+ games (not including playing spring training games). You hear the phrase all the time but I think this year is a make or break year for Buxton. He turns 30 next year already. I'm rooting for him as well. How can you not?!?

    Some incredible stuff happening in this blog entry! I'm so old I remember when Kepler struggled to get a hit during spring training 2021 and the people who were concerned about Kepler were dragged over the coals. 🙂 I think people aren't realizing that every team has players who take live batting practice on the back fields. An 84 mph fastball from Aaron Sanchez on a back field is not a game simulation. What I would like to know is if Buxton is with his teammates in the dugout during the games. If Buxton is not in the lineup again tomorrow then I would want someone who is down in Ft Myers to at least tell me that much. The only other example of a healthy player skipping spring training, that I could find, was Ryan Zimmerman in 2018, who got off to his typical slow start in April and then got hurt in May.

    Speaking of trading for Taylor to be Buxton's caddy, and signing Gallo, who is basically just a guy, add the 2023 salaries of Taylor and Gallo together and it's more than Buxton's base salary in 2023. Think about it.

    I don't think baseball compares to football here. Spring training is not meaningless. Buxton was expected to be fully healthy well before camp and ready to go. More likely than not, missing two weeks will set him back--however, this light schedule could also pay off! We shall see. Given Buxton's contract incentives to finish in the top ten of the MVP voting, here is a comparison against the list of 2022 American League MVP finishers and their number of plate appearances this spring training so far. Not counting World Baseball Classic. Just PAs in MLB games so far this spring: 1 -- 16 PA for Aaron Judge 2 -- 5 PA for Shohei Ohtani 3 -- 0 PA for Yordan Alvarez (hand injury) 4 -- 17 PAs for Jose Ramirez 5 -- 16 PAs Jose Altuve 6 -- 14 PAs for Andres Jimenez 7 -- 17 PAs for Julio Rodriguez 8 -- 17 PAs for Mike Trout 9 -- 10 PAs for Xander Bogaerts 10 -- 0 PA for Justin Verlander Bottom line: Players play in games in the spring, even the best players, even if it's just every other day for a few weeks, for a few innings at a time, at 50% effort.

    I'm just glancing at Fangraphs, and comparing Farmer, Solano, Arraez, and Polanco, at second base. No doubt the Farmer and Solano signings were highly praised on this website, but I'm not convinced either of those players, glancing at their profiles, is any better than Luis Arraez at fielding that position. In that sense, the Farmer and Solano signings just look like ordinary free agents that would be signed in any other year, not sneaky signings designed to get a leg up on other teams with the new rules in mind.
