Hey—I don’t think Gladden is mailing it in! Although you may be right, as I’ve noticed the number of his “special assignments” away from the broadcast booth seems to increase every year. I haven’t heard the Yankees announcer but i’ve heard Jessica Mendoza do color for ESPN Sunday Night Baseball and she’s as good as they come. Because working with data is becoming a more important skill, and is already in theory open to anybody, and “big league experience” being less important, do you see the change happening more quickly? -

Ha—I might be wrong too! I love Bumgarner because of his “Rocky-Balboa-training-in-the-woods-in-winter* quality or personality about him, that I think front offices are going to bite on. Not to mention his postseason record and overall record. I would guess he gets a better contract than Wheeler, but I also wonder if Bumgarner is the most likely to extend (maybe for a small discount, maybe not) with his current team. *Rocky IV

Valid Points.. I assumed Schoop was good in the field, but maybe not. I do feel Schoop is much better around second base than Arraez and has a stronger arm. And the overall hitting profile weighs strongly in favor of Arraez. With Cron, the front office will have to decide if the thumb injury is what affected his performance in the second half. I’d give Cron the benefit of the doubt but that’s far from a lock, and have no gut feeling either way on what they will do there.

I could get on board with some of these suggestions. However I don’t understand the perception that Bumgarner is too old and therefore not worth a bid, but Wheeler gets a five-year deal. I don’t know what’s in Bumgarner’s heart, like if he’s inclined to stay with the Giants. If he’s not, I’d go hardest after him.

Great thread. I think they had Polanco throw more sidearm this year, and that improved his accuracy? (Or at least ironed out his flaws.) I’d try to sustain that with Polanco one more season. He can look really good at times... I’d give Sano one more season at third... and it will be interesting to see how Arraez holds up over a whole season. Schoop was good in the field. And I love defense. Cron is great with a good thumb. I’m not opposed to some infield upgrades but it might take more effort or payroll than is warranted, given the pitching situation. Which suggests that Odorizzi or other fly ball pitchers might be good bets for one more year, too.

Now they know that, but claims are blind, is my understanding. Not endorsing it, but do you think Syndergaard for Lewis, Gonsalves, and one other arm or piece would have been appealing to the Mets?

Ok so in exchange for Syndergaard, it was rumored that the Mets were interested in Buxton or Lewis or Kirilloff, or some combination of. But now we know for certain that the Mets were interested in Gonsalves. This tells me there might have been a deal to be made this past summer, somehow, and that an extra starter in the ALDS might have made a huge difference. Especially if it had been Syndergaard. I want to see a trade or signing this winter—early this winter— that knocks me off my stool. This team needs pitching, bad. Their cutting Perez is a sideways admission IMO that pitchers can’t necessarily be fixed, or analytics applied to pitchers’ strengths. Sometimes sure, but what really makes a difference is getting pitchers who can pitch, who have that track record.

Oh I got one right! Lol Denny McLain yeah, if I had thought about it more, and I guess Curt Schilling never won the Cy Young—finished second in voting three times—and maybe hasn’t been charged with a felony yet either. But one can hope.

I wonder if there is some confusion about what the strike zone is. The rulebook is pretty clear: it’s “that area over home plate...” and then, what a strike is, which is when “any part of the ball passes through any part of the strike zone.” The slow breaking pitches the clip the front bottom of the strike zone, are strikes. The “strikes” that wind up in the dirt seem implausible, but I would like to see that graphically presented. But I think it’s possible the sharpest breaking pitches, received by catchers stationed very deep, might actually be strikes, even when they skip in the dirt. If people wanted to change the rule book definition of a strike, and raise the low point to higher than “the hollow beneath the kneecap,” then please say so. I would probably be on board with that, actually. The more important thing to me is that umpires call strikes strikes. We are seeing too many counts go to four strikes, and by extension, too many innings extended to four outs, and that is most certainly not in the rulebook or in the spirit of the game. And yeah what was said above, grade the umpires, offer the good umps incentives to work home plate more, and shut out the bad umpires from ever getting home plate. That would go towards solving the problem too. /rant

I can respect that. Is it the sinking breaking pitch that clips the bottom front of the plate that you don’t like? Would you be ok if the rulebook strike zone was changed, so that that pitch remained a ball, not a strike?

I guess I disagree, that I do want the home plate umpire to make the final call. If the call can be flashed immediately on the scoreboard, it should be possible to send the call to the ump alone.

I have some issues with that Boston U study. For one, I can’t make sense of their interpretation of the two-strike bias. I can’t believe they didn’t have a “baseball” person proof their work. Regardless, we are only at this point because home plate umpires are not doing their jobs as well as they should. I’m ready for automated ball-strike calls as soon as the technology is seamless.

Honorable mention: Kurt Suzuki! Granted Garver’s 2019 was spectacular, but what did you think of adding Suzuki? guess the Mauer-Suzuki transition was before framing stats? If I recall, Suzuki was not a good framer. Suzuki’s arm was below average too, but in more recent years it was less a liability with teams running less. But after Suzuki switched bats in mid-2016, his career really came back to life. And I hesitate to say it, but sounds like he was a great teammate. Happy for him!

As always I appreciate your opinion, but if true, then the Twins will have a very brief window to capitalize on their advantage before other teams catch up. Maybe the Twins will then be enjoying their next innovation ahead of the other teams, and stay one step ahead, but maybe not.
