Trio Hinting at Twins Pitching Pipeline
Hosken Bombo Disco replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It’s a side discussion, but I completely agree. For roughly the same price as a Perez/Pineda combo, or Pineda/Bailey/Hill, or Happ/Shoemaker, the Twins could have had Darvish + another pre-arb pitcher making the minimum. For the same price. “Shoemaker’s contract is cheap, this is a no risk signing, because the Twins can just drop him if he doesn’t pan out” we see some version of that argument every year (no offense to any specific Twins fans out there!)- 40 replies

As it relates to Ober, I do agree with you. I don’t know about the data on his pitches but he has command and poise and takes the mound like he has a job to do.- 40 replies

Game Score: White Sox 11, Twins 1

After Jimenez hit his first homer, it was 3-0, or “three-nothing Sox, in Minnesota!” according to the White Sox announcers. “three-nothing Sox, in Minnesota!” To which, I offer: adventures in Video Captioning Silver Linings:- 25 replies

Week in Review: New-Look Rotation
Hosken Bombo Disco replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Re: New Look Rotation: As of now, how I see the 2022 rotation shaking out like this: 1. ? 2. ? 3. Maeda (optimistic) 4. ? 5. Ober I don’t usually care for one year “make good” pitcher contracts, but next year sure, go to town. Find a couple guys one year for cheap. I’m sure Pineda would come back, as well. So yes I do think Ryan slots into the rotation next season, and hopefully performs in a slot above where Maeda is. I’m not confident in the other two pitchers they traded for contributing in 2022 at this point. Speaking of Maeda. It seems like Maeda is starting to struggle with his ability to put hitters away? Same as several of you have mentioned about Jax not having that 2-strike strikeout pitch. Maeda is more and more looking exhausted after his starts, like he’s been wrung through an Olympic triathlon after not training for it, or something similarly grueling. Even after five innings he sometimes looks completely spent. He might need an extra recovery day between starts in 2022. I did not see how he came out of yesterday’s game, however. Speaking of Olympics. Interesting that the Twins traded for not one but two guys who were currently overseas when the trade was finalized. Did any other players on the Olympic team get traded? Maybe falvine has discovered a new market inefficiency? thank you all for letting me post and air my thoughts!- 37 replies

Game Score: Reds 6, Twins 5
Hosken Bombo Disco replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Polanco is hitting out of his mind right now, for a lost cause. I think it’s a fair question to wonder what kind of trade return he could have brought back at the deadline, or will bring back this offseason, that would help the Twins in 2023 or 2024.- 25 replies

Wainwright is definitely one of the better hitting pitchers. I'm just trying to add something interesting to the conversation. -
I am bullish on Ober. I don't understand the premise of the article that he will only be useful as rotational depth, was selected late in the draft, and is on a pitch count for the rest of 2021. But that somehow he has the most to "prove." Sounds like the opposite to me. Headline and story writers need to coordinate? I'd like to just see him get his work in for the rest of the season. He will be a rotation piece in 2922.

Thanks for noticing! instead of naming the pitchers i tried to use a parallel construction to highlight how different the pitcher plate appearances were. Adam Wainwright's other plate appearance was in the 4th inning. Pineda couldn't put him away. The at bat extended to 10 pitches, required a mound visit by Garver, and resulted in a 108-mph exit velocity to Arraez which he grabbed but threw for an error. That hit by Wainwright was the second hardest hit ball of the game. -

Broadcasters like Bremer always gush over "productive outs" even when the outs are made by power hitters. So then, not sure why, in an N.L. game, the Twins cannot plan ahead and ask a pitcher to make a productive out by sacrificing (Mentorship opportunity lost!) -

The Cardinals pitcher came to bat twice in bunting situations. Laid down two sacrifice bunts. The Twins pitcher also came to bat twice in bunting situations. Grounded into double play in the first one, and then was lifted for a pinch hitter. -

José Berríos Traded to Blue Jays
Hosken Bombo Disco replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I’ve seen Moneyball, and read the book, many times. Both are A+ baseball stories, but the movie comes at the book in a slightly different way. For example, Jeremy Brown is a pretty big part of the book, but only really appears in the film at the very end. The irony of the Moneyball franchise, both book and film, is that Oakland’s great starting rotation of those years isn’t really discussed. Starting pitching is more art than science. Let’s hope Falvey and Levine have brought back some scouts with an innate talent for evaluating pitching, and that they start listening to those scouts. Without Berríos now, that’s the way this team becomes competitive again in 2022.- 304 replies

I have weighed the pros and cons of both sides, even if it looks like I am only playing one side. There is plenty of support for your side being expressed in this thread. This is a tough situation, and one entirely of their own making.- 304 replies

José Berríos Traded to Blue Jays
Hosken Bombo Disco replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Oh not all commenters, but some, yes definitely I do feel downplay the winning aspect, and what winning can do for the fan base, and what two back to back losing seasons might also do. Thanks for asking. Pitchers and players are thought of as assets and resources (and I don’t mind when fans on a discussion board do this) but I heard Thad Levine call some players “expiring assets” in a radio interview last week. So I have to wonder if that’s how they actually think about the players on the roster up there in the executive offices. It’s as if what happens on the field and in the clubhouse is secondary. Yes that is the impression I get.- 304 replies

Not all commenters here, but some, yes. Pitchers and players are instead though of as assets and resources (which is fine for fans on a discussion board) and even Thad Levine used the phrase “expiring assets” in an interview I heard recently. So I do get the sense that what happens on the field is secondary for some people.- 304 replies

Imagine having a pitcher so good that he’s confident in making a lot of money in free agency a year and a half down the road. But I hadn’t heard what you guys are hearing about Berrios asking for $40 million a year.- 304 replies

José Berríos Traded to Blue Jays
Hosken Bombo Disco replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I would be happy to have that conversation about which of the young pitchers they traded for might pan out. Maybe that's something for the offseason. I don't know how anyone can think trading away Berríos makes the team better for 2022, because, first, obviously, they will need to replace Berrios. We are always asked to "wait to cast judgment etc." month after month, year after year. I don't know which of these pitchers projects to reach the level of Berríos either next year or in the following years. Frankly, probably none of them. One of them might. Which one? I think commenters on this forum talk about running a franchise like it's a board game, and have forgotten how valuable winning can be.- 304 replies

I made an honest reply to you. This next reply of yours is unserious. The deadline is past. The roster going into 2022 is the essentially the same roster of 2019 and 2020, but with worse pitching.- 304 replies

No, the best case scenario for keeping Berrios in 2022 is that the team wins again and goes deep into the postseason—maybe even the World Series— and gives the fan base a fun, thrilling story to follow along with, and generates a ton of good will and positive media.- 304 replies

On the contrary, I think trading Berríos is the low risk move. Going into 2022 with essentially the same team we had in 2019, 2020, 2021 and your two best players in their final years... that is the high risk, high reward move, in my opinion.- 304 replies
