  1. Time to end that playoff losing streak! (
  2. The Twins had a similar extra-inning game against Detroit last season, when both teams tried really hard to lose but the other team wouldn’t let them. The result today was different. Give them credit for getting fed up and hanging a five spot in the 12th.
  3. Yes, Jax throws a very, very high rate of sliders. He has a good one but the league is going to figure it out sooner or later. Let’s hope the last half dozen appearances aren’t the start of that trend already. With relievers, we are dealing with inherently small samples, more so early in the season. I’d also like to read more about his pitch mix and movement. Jax has a great story and it was not a smooth transition to baseball. I think they left him unprotected in the Rule 5 too, but could be misremembering. Easy guy to root for.
  4. Last night would have been a good opportunity to stomp their hearts out too
  5. Cue the “That’s why they picked up Hamilton” comments
  6. I think Chicago is too broken to actually make a run at the Central, but if they do, it will be because of these three games, getting Tim Anderson back, Liam Hendricks is done with chemo and back in the house, etc. PS, I’m glad to see some well timed small ball
  7. I did not do the calculating either but only did some googling and spot checking back to 1994. I did not look at 1969-1993 either, thinking that more teams in those larger divisions would tend to drive the win percentage closer to the overall mean of .500. So, this only means that the Twins chances this year are better than ever. Fun! (with numbers)
  8. It’s easy to fall into the recency bias, depending on if their offense is hot or cold at the moment. I think it’s below average but not terrible and not any worse than Cleveland’s. As long as the Lopez/Gray/Ryan trio keep it up, with a healthy Duran, the Twins will give Cleveland a battle. I do worry about Correa, he was lifted for a pinch runner in the 9th Saturday with his spot in the order potentially coming up to bat in the 10th.
  9. In my opinion, it was a freak injury. I’m on board.
  10. Re Buxton playing CF: At this point, my impression is that Rocco is waiting on the front office for the go ahead, the front office is listening to the training staff, the training staff is waiting to hear from Buxton, Buxton is waiting for Rocco to talk to him, Rocco is waiting for the front office,… Who has the courage to untie this Gordian Knot before it turns into a Tarantino film scene? 🙂
  11. The 2023 AL Central is the worst division ever in the history of MLB. The win percentage supports that.
  12. The Ryan-Cruz trade was a win-win. The Twins received a good starting pitcher and the Rays, the thinking goes, did not stand pat when they needed hitting and dealt from a position of strength. Noted that the throw in piece the Twins received is out of the organization and the throw in piece the Rays received is currently in their big league bullpen. Ultimately the Twins are going to have to develop pitching from within their system for this to be sustainable. The jury is still out on Ober and Varland but so far it looks promising. We shall see about SWR. Hopefully a few more arms besides those 3 start emerging as well.
  13. Montas was hurt, correct?
  14. I had been following agadmator’s excellent daily spoiler-free recaps for the entire match, and then just this morning I unfortunately saw something in one of my feeds about Liren winning before getting to hear it from agadmator (Antonio Radic). oh well. Still looking forward to seeing the recap. Yeah, I was slightly pulling for Liren, actually.
  15. My first take would be similar to yours Dman. With Oakland being so bad, my hypothesis is that opposing pitchers are just attacking all Oakland hitters, and Rooker is benefitting from seeing a ton of good pitches. I am neutral on Rooker but hope he does well for himself!
  16. What kind of pitches is he getting to hit?
  17. Drew Maggi gets the start at third base today for Pittsburgh. Pirates defeat Dodgers, 6-2. Maggi goes 0-3 (no strikeouts) and an infield assist.
  18. Unfortunately Maggi struck out
  19. I’m glad Maeda has made a recovery from some of the bad luck injuries that have struck him. He seems like a decent guy. He has looked cooked since spring training. I don’t think we need to see two more starts at this point. Let’s hope the team has another way for him to contribute. If he does get another start or two, I hope he gives us 5-6 solid innings. The radio guys mentioned that Maeda has been taken off the field by the trainer in 3 of his 4 starts. And my thought was, “Like a mustache lion dragging a gazelle through the Serengeti.”
  20. The strategy of trading away young prospects for more expensive veterans kind of flips the table on the original strategy the front office came here with — I am happy to just enjoy what we have in Gray this season and let the offseason take care of itself 😊 (PS the chess ‘World Series’ is taking place right now with only a few more games before a new world chess champion is decided )
  21. Wow, Sonny Gray. I would be curious to know if he is still calling his own pitches (I assume so), how many other Twins are calling, or even would be capable of calling their own pitches (no idea), and how common it is across the league (no idea). Whatever it is, it’s working, so don’t tinker or touch a thing! At this risk of sticking my foot in my mouth, because I know it’s still April, but maybe Gray is capable of pitching at this level as far as the All Star break. (A game he would then be pitching in.)
  22. I think in future years, when we look back on Simeon Woods Richardson’s career, the most probable outcome will be that he was an AAAA type pitcher in the mold of Gonsalves or Kohl Stewart. Decent minor league numbers but not usually good enough for MLB. However, I think he will be given a longer run than those two, and might have a nice short stretch in him at some point like Dobnak did. I’ve also noticed some other odd stuff, like not appearing in games for long stretches that can’t be explained by injury or Covid. He did not pitch in the Olympics in 2021 (Joe Ryan pitched a lot). He was demoted to St. Paul really quick this spring and he did not make his first start for the Saints until game 8. Maybe he needs a mentor or teammate he can connect with, or some other way to harness that excess energy, if that’s actually a thing and I’m not reading too much into it. to add: just trying to present a realistic counterpoint to all the good stuff you read about him , accept or reject as it suits you
  23. Maybe instead of the 4 year, $73.5 million extension they gave Lopez, they should have waited until after this Nationals start and got him for more like 4/72!
