    I actually enjoyed the game today. Didn’t have a problem with any of Rocco’s moves. Nice to see a new face in Refsnyder who helped today and hopefully Kirilloff is getting close. So glad for Sanó. Gladden called it. Sanó got ahold of two balls and one of them one the game. Maybe he can get on one of his streaks, or maybe it fires up a couple other guys. Lots of us have been asking for Rocco and the front office to let a starter pitch the 7th sometimes, and that finally happened today too. That’s not always going to work out, but today it did. Obviously the bullpen is still short some talent, and the fifth rotation spot will be a concern, but a win is a win; you only play them one at a time and you can’t get it all back all at once.

    The starter was left in too long? He pitched five and a third. Sorry, Mike, I will have this conversation with you all day, at least for today's game. I was listening on the radio. Sounded like Pineda wanted to stay in. After a game yesterday of 4.1 innings from the bullpen (two innings from Duffey and Colome). Now Rogers is burned up for tomorrow. Moves the other guys forward in the line. Multiple innings from the bullpen, every single night. It all compounds. Let a starter pitch, for crying out loud, maybe something interesting happens today and Pineda works out of it, and then pitches a quick scoreless seventh, and the guys come to bat in the top of the 8th with some vigor, Kepler's home run ties the game, Robles and Rogers still fresh for the bottom of the eighth. I mean, honest question? How much worse can it get to leave a starting pitcher in a game that he does not want to come out of, just once? (none of this is meant to be taken personally)

    The advanced analytics are necessary in today’s game, but not sufficient. Baseball still requires tobacco and spit. This team doesn’t have enough of it.

    I guess the pushback would be: what would they say? Is it the whole team that needs changing? I’d argue no. Guys like Buxton or Donaldson getting in the face of our bullpen pitchers seems a little off key. I mean, the bullpen guys already seem intimidated enough by opposing batters, no need for our own batters to shatter them completely

    Rortvedt really seemed to struggle catching Maeda and Berrios, not on the same page with either, though I did notice a fist bump between Maeda and Rortvedt last night when Kepler robbed Abreu to end the third. Small victories I guess. Maeda recovered and retired the last nine he faced. Maeda might have had another inning in him? Rocco likes to turn it over to the ‘pen, as we all know. I guess it wouldn’t have mattered. I am going to assume Rocco, Derek and Thad are all kind of tied at the hip and in lockstep regarding the bullpen and pitcher usage.

    I agree with your observation @chpettit19 that Buxton is a hard player to place a value on. Thats why I think the easiest answer is also the best answer in this case: let Buxton play out his contract through 2022. This assumes as I do that this is still a very good team having a very bad year, and that next year they will rebound (assuming bullpen improvements are made, and so on).

    Levine did give an interview to Provus this morning on Inside Twins. He came over the radio as a little anxious about something, so I will give him a pass. Bottom line: Expect the good things that are happening to continue being good (for example, batted ball exit velocity), and the bad things to stop being bad (inherited runners scored).

    Sounded like Berríos could not get on the same page with Rortvedt. Sounded like lots of shakeoffs and stepoffs.

    The Twins are approaching the point of no return in 2021. Win tomorrow, sweep the Tigers, and then give your guys a day off and set your team up to compete against the White Sox in 6 of the next 9 games next week.

    Agree. Although next time a starting pitcher gives up a couple runs in the 7th, someone is bound to say Told you So. (not naming names ) But one more inning, here and there, from a starter, will provide some benefit. Many things need to be done. Leaving a starter in for another inning or another batter is going to have to be part of the, *ahem*, process, of getting the bullpen back on its feet and salvaging this season.

    I think part of the solution, as @ToddlerHarmon gets at, is letting Maeda and Berrios pitch deeper into games. Happ, Dobnak and Pineda if they are breezing.

    I don’t think Berrios struggled. Not at all. One mistake pitch in six innings in a game in which the offense bats did their jobs. The Rodney Dangerfied of the Twins rotation! Enjoy him while you still can. Free agency beckons.

    I don’t understand what is meant by process. Kirilloff just looks like a natural hitter. He has always sprayed the ball and hit line drives. The metrics you describe in the article look more like just another way of describing that. I don’t think there’s any outside process happening here. Give him at bats, coach him as needed, get him experience.

    Baddoo has cooled off, and Detroit is still a 100 loss team. The knee jerk thing would be for Detroit to give up on him now, now that they have him, and he’s still in his early 20s (Baddoo is younger than Kirilloff) and still developing.

    I flinched when I saw Buxton run through first base.... I don't want him to get hurt, but I don't want him to turn off the faucet either. Can we dream on getting a 150-game season from him??

    I was listening to the bottom of the 2nd inning on the radio. Atteberry and Provus were dissecting every pitch Maeda threw, in clinical detail. Very weird. I am just hoping they were going down a rabbit hole, and not communicating something subtle about what the team is concerned about.

    Any time someone suggests something like “but the Twins are 7-5 in 9 inning games”, I do put my antennae up for spin. I mean, it’s a fact, and I’ve probably said it myself, but ... ... but watch a game and make up your own mind, I guess. I hope the Twins turn it around. However, we already know they don’t have the pitcihing. Therefore, the offense will need to pick up the slack (like in 2019). When Washington started 19-31 in 2019, they had Scherzer, Strasburg and Corbin ready in the rotation. When Cleveland made up 11 games on the Twins, they had a .500 record but a good team as well (Lindor, etc). The Twins are neither the 2019 Washington or 2019 Cleveland team.

    The Twins are short Kepler and Sanó, and decide to carry five starters and eight relievers into the series with a day off Thursday. There’s little chance to make good late inning substitutions. When Baldelli does make a substitution, it’s to remove someone like Arraez, one of his best players. The double Rosario hit to left to Arraez should have been caught. It had an expected batting average of .150 — in other words, 85 of 100 of those balls are caught. I’m not blaming Arraez. We saw Eduardo Escobar shy away from a ball just like that in 2014, because he wasn’t familiar with the outfield. But we do need his bat in the lineup.
