    I think people lose sight of what “facts” are. The Twins lost 89 games and finished last in the Central is a fact (well, two facts). Stuff like, The Twins spent a lot of money to sign Donaldson, is a reasonable judgment, most people would agree with, but not really a fact in the true sense.

    I don’t think it’s an AL Central problem. If the Twins has pulled their weight and won 90+ games, the Central would have looked like several other divisions this season. So that’s why I say it’s a Twins problem, not a Central problem. As far as the possibility of the White Sox being swept and having this be the fourth consecutive season where the AL Central winner has been swept out of the first round? First, other teams are allowed to be good. But secondly, yeah, that’s a bad look. The Twins have played a big part in that streak. Three different AL Central teams represented the American League in the World Series for 4 out of 5 years recently, from 2012 to 2016. So that tells me that a good team or mid-market team from the Central division can compete just fine.

    Is that supposed to be some non-phonetic spelling of The Duff? I think this is the more compelling question. Kind of like how you see the word boogieman spelled out as “bogeyman” — in an attempt to terrorize golfers, apparently.

    I am trying to imagine what Falvey or Levine would think, hearing that they are given an A+ grade after a year like this.

    I’m as guilty as anyone, but we should hold off on calling these “lottery tickets” this upcoming offseason. Other teams are cashing in nicely on them, and with too much regularity, and that’s not how the lottery operates.

    Agree with Ober. I might call Arraez underappreciated, but not underrated, if there’s a distinction there. I would also call Jax underappreciated in that he is taking the ball every fifth day, but he’s not underrated per se. Donaldson’s power numbers look way down to me. I’m guessing Thielbar is having a career year. So the other names I was thinking of were Jeffers, who is an iron man, and Gordon. If I squint I could have seen Gordon as a bench guy, 4th outfielder and pinch running for guys like Donaldson late in the game (9th maybe 8th inning). If the Twins were competitive this year that’s how I would have used him. Maybe next year. Gordon probably cannot sticking in the infield from what I’ve read, so it looks like outfield, and he probably makes enough contact to stick in the show somewhere for a while?

    Thanks. Always good to hear from someone who watched live and could give it a close eye. I wish the news was better on this night. Maybe just an off night; sounds like his bat will definitely play somewhere.

    Also note to radio stat guys: the 28 batters the Twins faced last night doesn't tie a record, since Radke faced 27 batters in that 1996 game? Not sure how you would count that.

    Great outing. Made the game thread fun again. I was reminded of a start Brad Radke made early in his career. Just like Joe Ryan last night, Radke also had a perfect game into the 7th inning, for 19 hitters, in Radke's second season, which was 1996. In Yankee Stadium no less. Also that turned out to be the dynasty Yankees team Radke was pitching against. Not saying 2021 Cleveland will turn out to be the 1996-2001 Yankees, but if Joe Ryan turns out to be Brad Radke ... ?

    It looks like Gordon entered the game as third baseman (a whole ‘nuther conversation) and then came to bat in Buxton’s spot. It looks like Cave entered as center fielder at the same time Gordon entered. If Gordon had actually pinch hit for Buxton and then went out to play third base, the notation would read: PH-3B /post edited a thousand times for clarity (I hope)

    Sure, things can change fast, but I tried to get you to pump the brakes back in spring training when you called the 2021 rotation the deepest in memory. A good pitching staff in 2022, in my opinion, will have more to do with bringing in new pitching and bullpen coaches and bringing new people into the front office from the outside to help with pitching the day after the season ends. This organization has been bleeding pitching talent since Falvey and Levine showed up and while I’m not calling for their firing, I do think the first thing to do is to get someone else in to stop the bleeding. Or maybe there are people already inside who aren’t being heard who need to be. Even better. Not trying to be Debbie Downer for anyone. Not trying to have a negative mindset. Just trying to present another set of expectations for people to consider for 2022. We can half-expect that 1 or 2 of the young pitchers will emerge and surprise us in 2022 and still have fun following the team and talk about moving the pieces around for 2023. Thanks!

    Frankly? I think the only ones on that list ready to be MLB starting pitchers in 2022 would be Ryan and Winder. The others are either in AA or hurt (or in the case of Woods Richardson, missing in action).

    I thought so too. Actually I thought the batter looked fooled, looked like a late swing on an inside pitch, but good bat speed. The last hitter of the inning had a much better swing and contact on a fly ball to the fence, so call it a wash. I thought Ryan was fine. I don’t know. Looks like he has back-to-back starts lined up against Toronto later in the month, and the young Toronto lineup will get some extended looks at him. Maybe that will tell us something, maybe not. I can see why Tampa Bay traded Ryan—his fastball moves okay but he’s too dependent on it. I can also see how the fastball plays well with that deceptive arm slot. And he works fast, as a couple people pointed out in the game thread. I think he can become pretty good if he develops a secondary breaking pitch. I think the slider was better than the curve which I think is too slow to consistently fool MLB hitters.

    Is there some faulty construction here? If you are going to state what the Twins did in the playoffs, shouldn’t you state what the Dodgers did in the playoffs?

    Yup, Frankie Sweet Music Viola is not a data lover. However, I don’t see anything in that Tweet to disagree with. On another note, I was glad to hear Barreiro rake this organization this week over their hubris about pitching. I really hope the Twins bring in outside expertise this offseason and resist the urge to trade Buxton for pitching.

    After the 2019 postseason debacle, part of my evaluation process for Twins pitchers is “Would I be confident with this player appearing in the postseason in the Bronx?” Going into 2021, the answer for me was: Berrios, Rogers, maybe Pineda and maybe Maeda. cross one more off that list.

    I kind of wanted to see Gil myself. Never seen him yet, not even a video clip. As it turns out, the Yankees will play Atlanta on Monday, where Huascar Ynoa might be lined up for the start. Gil versus Ynoa. That would give Pohlad and St. Peter a game to watch together up in their suite on the Twins offday. it even looks like its the free game of the day on MLB, so they wouldn’t have to spend any money on a subscription.

    For the record I’m a huge Albers fan and loved his debut starts in 2013. I love pitching an love to watch guys who know how to pitch. Albers would be the perfect guy to pitch at AAA full time but who could also make the occasional fill-in start when the MLB team needs it. I hope he likes it here and sticks around.

    Too bad Kiermaier wasn't thrown out on that. It might have went down in the scorebook as a ground out to the second baseman. Oh well. A home run hit to an infielder is interesting too.
