  1. There is one immediate downside to large market teams. It forces fans to pick one team instead of following both teams in NY, LA and Chicago. You can’t be a White Sox fan and a Cubs fan when they’re rivals in the same division.
  2. I guess I don’t see Rutschman as a better bet to rebound than Ober. Both have been better in prior seasons. Baltimore needs pitching and the Twins need another catcher.
  3. It is funny how the Disney/Fox merger forced Fox to divest the regional sports networks, which bankrupted them, which led to the Twins ending up on ESPN anyway.
  4. Zebby Matthews was mentioning in his interview last night how valuable it is to have Lopez and Ryan on the team and how much he has learned in his off the field preparation from them.
  5. They're not getting a cheap, ace pitcher for an average catcher getting paid an average wage. That's delusional. Mountcastle might be non-tendered, he's projected to make $10M in arbitration. If your paycheck is equal to your production, you don't have much trade value. That's true with Ober, Larnach, Rutschman and Mountcastle.
  6. Interesting, but almost certainly less valuable than keeping Ryan and Lopez.
  7. MLB batting average 1977 - .264 MLB batting average 2025 - .246 That's a 20 point drop in league batting average and the hitters are better now than they were then. With Arraez, all you get is batting average. He's slow, has no power and is a bad fielder.
  8. I agree with this, especially with a young pitching staff. Isaiah Kiner-Falefa is apparently on waivers and would be an upgrade on Ryan Fitzgerald.
  9. I have no idea why they're fooling around with Genesis Cabrera. He's an impending free agent. At least Hatch and Kriske still have team control remaining. If they need a lefty to eat innings to finish the season I'd rather they grab Jose Castillo off waivers from the Mets.
  10. Austin Martin is playing like he deserves spot on a big league roster. Still making mistakes but the good has outweighed the bad. Dude gets on base.
  11. I think they are sure to trade one of Ryan, Ober and Lopez this winter. I don't think they need to trade more than one of them. I agree with this. They have plenty of prospects, especially for the outfield. They need a 2nd catcher, a first baseman and some relief pitching. I'm not trading Joe Ryan or Pablo Lopez for that. Ideally they can trade Ober to a team that wants to overlook 2025. He's probably not in the top 5 on the depth chart anymore. Pablo / Ryan / Bradley / Matthews / SWR looks like a competitive rotation with plenty of depth in AAA. Festa might be the pitcher who moves to the bullpen and dominates. I proposed Ober and Larnach to the Orioles for Rutschman and Mountcastle. That trade could help both teams.
  12. Important to remember that Abel is about where Zebby and Festa were in their development last season. He really needs to fail at the MLB level to make progress.
  13. 20 years ago was 2005 and people were abundantly aware that batting average is not telling the whole story in 2005. You have to go back at least 40 years to find people overrating Steve Garvey and the like.
  14. What is the Venn diagram of "I'm never paying for another game as long as the Pohlads own the team" and "I love Luis Arraez, he's a player worth the ticket price"?
  15. Most of the relievers the Twins have dealt away have performed worse for their new team. The Twins have somehow been able to finish out games with their remaining players and flotsam acquired for free. It's getting harder to claim that Rocco "doesn't know how to manage a bullpen".
  16. Who? I can't think of any. If they exist, why aren't they on the roster right now?
  17. Aaron Sabato as your "Plan A" would be a really bad idea. He's not one of the top ten first basemen in AAA. I'd rather give 30-year old Nick Solak the job.
  18. The question is not Yes or No but “At what price should the Twins be interested?” I wouldn’t advocate signing Arraez to a multiyear multimillion dollar contract. One year at $5M or less would be fine.
  19. They're tired of the Pirates making the most money by not competing and cashing revenue sharing checks. They want to limit the top-end salaries so the big market teams are the ones making the most profit. They're going to buy off the small market teams with windfall expansion dollars. They're also going to make sure that the floor guarantees profitability. The Pirates will still be profitable by cashing revenue sharing dollars, but they won't be the MOST profitable team.
  20. Go get some minor league free agents and pick the best ones. Move a couple of the SP prospects who can't make the rotation into the bullpen. Pitchers sorted oldest to youngest (numbers from Fangraphs, may not be up to date as of 8/29) David Festa 25.5 Zebby Matthews 25.3 Simeon Woods Richardson 24.9 (out of options 2026) Connor Prielipp 24.6 Taj Bradley 24.4 Mick Abel 24.0 Andrew Morris 24.0 CJ Culpepper 23.8 Marco Raya 23.1 Kendry Rojas 22.8 The Twins need some minor league depth with options, but do they need 8 starters in the minors?
  21. That has nothing to do with a salary cap. If the owners want to share TV revenue more evenly that solves 90% of the problems. Share the media revenue 100% since that comes from merely existing in the league. Stop sharing in-stadium revenue to incentivize teams to sell out their stadiums (win games = more money). They can easily do this without a labor stoppage. $3M minimum salary would be a good floor. The owners are pushing for a hard salary cap because busting the union gives them a lot more money. If the salary cap didn't make them money, they wouldn't want it. It's that simple. I don't think MLB thinks that parity is the biggest issue. The league maximizes revenues when the Dodgers and Yankees are in the playoffs every year. It isn't good for business to have a perennial contender in Milwaukee or Kansas City. They're using parity as a smokescreen to get the fans on their side when they lock out the players. If they get a salary cap, I'm guessing they'll set it up in a way that keeps the Yankees and the Dodgers in the playoffs.
  22. I'm sure we'll get one (or a dozen) in about a month. There's still all of September to consider. Drops don't usually happen unless there is an add so I'd group them by priority. Players who need to be added - Gonzalez, Prielipp, Rojas, Morris, Mendez, Culpepper. Don't dump your top 30 prospects, especially when they're in AA/AAA. Maybe added - Schobel, Fedko, Rosario, Cardenas, Olivar. I think they could find a trade partner for Fedko (someone who wants to be able to option him) and add Rosario. I doubt they add Cardenas or Olivar or one would be catching right now instead of Mickey Gasper. Schobel and Rosario could get drafted, but can they stick on a roster for a whole season? Free agents: Christian Vazquez, Genesis Cabrera Marginal out-of-options relievers - Hatch, Kriske, Tonkin, Misiewicz, Davis Marginal out-of-options position players - Julien, Miranda, Outman That's 10 open spots. Could be non-tendered/cut without worrying: Keirsey, McCusker, Fitzgerald, Gasper Trade bait: Larnach That's 15 open spots without even thinking about marginal relievers with options (Ohl, Adams, Funderburk), Kody Clemens or Austin Martin. They have 2 players on the 60-day IL which will reduce that to 13 spots.
  23. Emmanuel Rodriguez is healthy again, right? Get him some at-bats in the majors.
