    The Reds almost certainly had claims on all 3 as well. The Twins were 4th in line on the relievers. Time to move Varland into the bullpen for September.

    All of those are possible. The team can keep or outright the player to the minors. The player can refuse the outright assignment if they have enough service time (these guys all have enough service time).

    Minnesota offers almost nothing for endorsements and Ohtani is the most marketable player in MLB. If he comes to MN he will be leaving at least $200M in endorsement money on the table.

    Lee won't be added to the 40 man roster until they want him starting for the Twins.

    BTW - why isn't Gallo on this list? Worst case he passes through and they keep him on the roster. Best case they dump him on a different playoff team and he hurts their offense as much as he hurts the Twins.

    Worst case scenario they decide to spend $3M and get all of them. They could add 5-6 players and really give the Twins fits. Fortunately I think their ownership is too cheap to make that move.

    Expanding on that, the Marlins are currently using Jorge Lopez and don't really have a 5th starter but they do have 3 decent lefties in the bullpen. Reynaldo Lopez will not get past them. The Reds wanted Giolito at the deadline and would probably be glad to dump Ben Lively from the rotation. Their bullpen has been decent but they could really use a lefty. Moore will not get past here. Their OF is very lefthanded and they could upgrade on Stuart Fairchild as the RH platoon bat. Grichuk is a natural fit here, especially since I think some of his salary is paid by the Rockies. The Guardians might claim some players just to keep them off the Twins. They're not completely out of it yet. The Twins are going to be left with Renfroe, Cisnero and Carrasco to pick from. No, thanks.

    No, he's still playing better than putting Farmer there every day.

    If they have long term value they're not likely to make it to the Twins on waivers. Entirely possible the Reds or Marlins lose a player to Oakland or Kansas City as part of this process. Low hanging fruit on the Marlins roster is probably Jorge Lopez. Don't want him back.

    Put the injured player on the 60 day IL.

    The Twins could do that pretty easily. Grab two players, cut Gallo and Luplow. When Kirilloff and Buxton return, cut those two players you just grabbed off waivers. I think the salaries would be more of a deterrent than the 40 man roster slots.

    They had a waiver trade deadline before. I think we will see that come back in some form.

    Forest Lake kids are good at wearing pitches; boys and girls. If they don't take the HBP you're likely to hear a parent call out "we've got ice".

    Gladden said Nick Gordon is doing baseball activities but not 100% running yet. He is doubtful to return. It gets more difficult as we get closer to the end of the season because the minor league teams end their seasons early and there is nowhere to go to get rehab at-bats. The Saints are done on the 24th. Nick Gordon should get at least 10 days worth of plate appearances to get ready but if he's not running full speed I doubt he is ready for rehab by the 14th. Sounds like Castro and Buxton should be back soon, then Kirilloff.

    The Twins have the possibility of being the first team to have their playoff spot decided. The teams in the East and West could be battling for the division title until the last day of the season. That could give the Twins the advantage of setting everything up for the postseason.
