    3B and CF are basically the same on the defensive spectrum. CF has a slight advantage that LH throwing isn't an issue which helps with scarcity by providing a lot of athletic lefthanded hitters.

    I'm hopeful that Matt Canterino is a rookie who will improve the roster in 2024.

    Hubbard owns broadcast stations in Rochester and Duluth. It's relatively easy for cable stations anywhere in the state of MN to add channel 45 to their basic packages. I watched several Saints games on the CW network this summer. They're owned by Sinclair. A less satisfactory compromise would be to show some Twins games locally on the CW and all of them on BSN. Outside of that, the solution is to end blackouts on MLB.tv. That would make Twins games available for the upper midwest at a much lower cost than the cable package currently required to see Twins games. Streaming is the solution for everyone not in the broadcast area. It makes the TV package less lucrative but the Twins should be more concerned with increasing viewership than making every last cent off this next contract.

    PBS is not going to ask people for money to pay for the rights to show the Twins. Baseball is going to be on television in order to sell advertising. I watch a lot of TPT (nature, biography and history) and the pledge drive programming is mostly terrible.

    Another option to fill Solano's role is Jorge Polanco.

    If they want him back in next season's rotation (see Martin Perez) he's probably worth a QO. I think Paddack took Maeda's spot and they're going to want someone as good as Gray to replace Gray.

    The Twins are seeing a lot of success developing pitchers. Varland, Ober and Festa are all producing far better than the consensus believed. I'm glad they drafted pitcher heavy last summer so they can have more development successes.

    Baseball viewership is very regional. People in Minnesota are much more likely to watch the Twins than an MLB game featuring two other teams. The NFL doesn't have as much drop off. But people DO watch if they can watch their local team. Local baseball broadcasts, even with the rules restricting viewership, are routinely the highest rated programs during the summer. If MLB focuses on growing their audience they could get 4-5x the viewers. This will only help attendance and TV ratings for the MLB playoffs. They've been eating their seed corn for years. Now it's time to plant some of it.

    That's the whole point. If it's local you can get it over the air, over basic cable or satellite in the broadcast footprint of the station. If you choose to subscribe to MLB.tv you can watch there instead. As long as you're watching the advertising the Twins make money.

    Or subscribing to MLB.tv. One benefit of broadcasting locally is the games would end up on basic cable, not an expensive sports tier.

    That's why you have the local broadcast partner. Do you really think someone halfway across the country is going to pick the Twins to watch over the other MLB teams? You have local teams because there is enough population locally to draw 2 million fans to the stadium. People from Montana are NOT part of that local population for the Twins. If they're baseball fans they will subscribe to MLB.tv to watch baseball. If they're just looking for something random to watch on TV they can watch a nationally televised game on Fox.

    One interesting tidbit - the national TV money went up enough in the most recent contract to cover whatever decrease in local TV money they might see. There's no way their 2024 TV revenue is less than their 2020 TV revenue.

    If they've apparently never heard of baseball before and need to decide if they enjoy it the people in Montana have several options. They can watch the nationally televised games on FOX or the free game of the day on MLB.tv. Then once they decide on a team to follow, they should be able to pick whichever team they want. MLB shouldn't care if they're watching the Twins, the Mariners, the Rockies or the Marlins in Montana as long as they subscribe. Streaming revenue should be shared equally across all 30 teams.

    They all have sub-channels showing 30 year old reruns that would work for broadcasting the Twins. Channel 45 would be a great fit for Twins games.

    Montana can just subscribe to MLB.tv if they want. The key to this is EVERYONE should be able to subscribe to MLB.tv and see the Twins, regardless of where they live.

    Even a local broadcast contract would bring in tens of millions of dollars. MLB needs to offer multiple options - over the air, on basic cable and streaming. Get as many people watching as possible and take a cut of the advertising revenue. Increased TV viewership will also increase demand for in-person attendance as part of a virtuous cycle. I think Boston bundled game tickets with their year-long streaming subscription. That's another way to increase revenue creatively.

    I'm interested in seeing what Varland can do with that cutter in the rotation. The lesson to learn here is you can turn most 5th starters into good relievers (see also Griffin Jax). I'd like to see the Twins grab some marginal starters with MLB experience (the kind who get minor league contracts because they have a 5+ ERA) and convert them to relief in AAA. It seems a cheaper way to make relievers than it is to buy them retail.

    I think the Phillies who were swinging at curve balls in the dirt last night would agree with you. "Just make contact" is really, really difficult.

    Polanco for Ray? He wouldn't be available until June of 2024 but the Twins could manage in the meantime without him. That's one way to acquire a top of the rotation lefty. Deal one guy who costs retail price and likely to be out half the season injured for another.

    I'm on board with finding a RH hitting outfielder to take Gordon's spot in the outfield but his salary is not of any concern. They have needed a RH bat since before they signed Gallo last year.

    I'm surprised Sano has yet to formally retire. He's done playing baseball professionally.

    I'm fine with Odorizzi being next season's Keuchel but they absolutely need to get a top of the rotation starter to replace Gray.
