I wasn’t completely clear. Varland is the 6th starter! My point was, after a BRIEF uptick from Sands, the fans shouldn’t anoint him The Guy to fill the potential void in the rotation. He’s having some success & IMO, he should be left where he is to try and build on that success. If, after another 45 days, he’s still looking good………the Pen will have many options and Sands could be moved to stretch out for a month. Still available for last 10 weeks as a potential starter. To me, they aren’t getting through the season without 7-8 starts from Festa. Continue to lengthen him out through May. He could spot start as soon as June to provide some rest for the rotation guys. No hurry for any changes on May 1, IMO.

So, related to Sands, and his success this year. Are there many of us that think Varland, if used in 3-6 hitter stretches, out of the Pen, wouldn’t excel? He too may have a sub 2.00 ERA through 14 innings or whatever Sands has thrown. Not throwing shade on Sand’s efforts but he’s not the “let’s stretch him out” answer for the rotation any more than Varland.

Caleb Thielbar Has a New Arsenal
JD-TWINS replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
………AND if he didn’t shake off Vazquez twice and then threw fastball on 0-2 count that got drilled into the OF, nobody would have any angst about last night. Luckily, next batter he got to 2 strikes on - he stuck with the Deuce - game over! Even with good stuff - can’t fix stupid.- 19 replies

Gotta say Santana homering from both sides 4 times in 5 games was not something I saw coming. How about MAX KEPLER!!! He was 1-20 before going on the IL ……….he’s been back since the 22nd and taken his average from .050 to .244 over the last 8 games. He has FIVE two out RBI since returning. The definition of clutch! Oh, and he never looks like the Angels/White Sox outfielders going after a fly ball, thank goodness!!

Jeffers went into last night (Monday) hitting .305 and they said his average with 2 strikes was some 40 points higher. Impressive! Lewis is more than likely mid-June return.

Nice win - not always going to score a bunch (coming off 16 & 11). The SOX big lefty had nice stuff and I was ecstatic when they removed him after 5 innings! Q: When will Castro start being instructed to bunt, a minimum of twice per week, or no paycheck………..he had a swinging bunt hit last night. He puts pressure on people with his speed. Need him on base more! Teams continually play him with SS up the middle and 3B at shallow SS spot when he’s batting LH. Put the ball on the ground and get on base!!! Left handed pitchers fall toward 3B naturally, so pushing the ball toward 1B makes the first baseman make some Circus Play to get him out. Gotta add to the arsenal soon.

He’s got Stewart & Jax used up in their “usual spots” to get the team to the 9th with “a chance”. Somebody has to pitch the 9th - 37 years old & rested!! How about not shaking off Vazquez twice, with an 0-2 count, to throw an average fastball that got ripped into the OF & put them into a real pinch? I almost jumped through my TV screen to get to the mound! His curve is so unique to today’s hitters - USE IT…….particularly when ahead in the count!!!! His stubbornness almost cooked the Team. Credit to him for clearing his head for the last guy …..that he struck out with the Deuce.

They are paying Jackson more - more experience which at various times, has value - he’s got an ERA of 4.30 early in season….14.2 innings with 17K’s ……don’t see him going anywhere until they may trade him in July if still “average”. Pretty sure Bowman will be dfa’d, without some mysterious injury to someone. I guess one other possibility is Option Sands to stretch out and let Bowman have his spot………I think Funderburk is more valuable on the 26 man though.

Seems to me Vazquez caught Sunday so Jeffers would be up tonight. Pretty sure they have been on the strict “every other day” rotation for catching duties without fail. Whoever didn’t catch yesterday will start tonight behind the plate.

I think they’ll load up on LH hitters as usual on Tuesday/Wednesday: Kirilloff - Buxton - Kepler - (Larnach at DH) Castro - Correa - Julien - Santana - Vazquez Depending upon how Jeffers is feeling, he may DH and Kirilloff could play 1B with Larnach in LF?

Spring of ‘25……somebody is always on your heels as a pro athlete! Margot - Farmer - Santana will all be gone next Spring & things will start look much different………..Martin - Lee - Wallner are the probable replacements.

Correa was getting paid similarly in ‘22 - right? Can’t have payroll revert to 2021 totals in 2024, particularly when the TV deal seemed to have been resolved at least for short-term. After winning a playoff series, it would seem that with Ticket Sales bump - mild ticket cost bump (inflation/success) - memorabilia/apparel sales - concessions increase…………ALL these seem to be able to handle an expected revenue bump of near $8M. Chasing other $25M players doesn’t make sense for mid-market club but tying the F.O.’s hands w/o being able to TRY & sign arms in the $10-$16M range has put the team in a tough spot with starting pitching.

Thielbar needs to start locking situations down when he comes in or, at 37, may be odd man out sooner than later. His Twin’s connection/history will buy him more time than a guy may normally get. Not going anywhere until June at earliest. Okert seems to be a longer term view acquisition. Jackson could be a trade piece in July if he is just average the next 60 days. Youth/options point to Funderburk being the choice to go down. Bowman will get DFA’d……maybe after his next outing sometime in Chicago this week. 13 position players: Farmer - Correa - Julien - Santana - Kirilloff Castro - Buxton - Kepler - Larnach - Margot Jeffers - Vazquez (Long-term, LEWIS) ………..now, Martin or Miranda……….Miranda as a choice at 3B & 1B & DH…..3 hits Sunday and has small sample BA up to around .300. Assuming, Martin goes down so he can play regularly as Castro will start splitting time in OF & 3B once Correa is back.

Week in Review: From Slumping to Streaking
JD-TWINS replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Vazquez to .250 - Castro to .250 - Julien to .236 - Kepler to .231 - Buxton to .244 ………All were under .200 just 6-10 days ago, Kepler started the year 1-20. Same hitting coach now as on April 18th - same hitting coach as August of ‘23 when team was tearing it up collectively……..players gotta execute. “…and a decent RP” = relief pitcher? Pen stacks up pretty well against anybody’s and two of Top 4 guys have been on IL whole season. Health would be/will be nice. Correa this week. Lewis in 6 weeks.- 31 replies

Summer sausage behind Twins win streak?
JD-TWINS replied to snellman's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Whatever works between the ears!! Summer Sausage lasts forever so things are looking up. -
He was perfect for 4 2/3 & then started to get cute, trying to be too fine “around” the plate. After he gave up 2 hits and had thrown a first pitch ball, I see Vazquez calling/gesturing for his change-up down out of the zone - WHY? Both times he got behind more and then a couple inside fastballs, not far enough off the plate, got hit out to RF. His fastball plays and he can spot it …….get ahead and use the other pitches off the fastball…….quit routinely pitching backwards, behind in the count……….was DOMINANT & then just loses mentally with pitch choices. Catcher/bench needs to take some responsibility in the approach. 4 2/3 perfect is pretty good though & perfect doesn’t exist in baseball. Got a win!

Agreed, it’s not a laugher for sure! ……,the SOX 22 or so losses have helped prop up the rest of the Division a bit though. AND, I typed here yesterday that the Guardians - Tigers - Royals - Twins Strength of Schedules through Saturday were #27 - #26 - #25 - #21 respectively……..the Division may see some regression through May.

Compete - both side!. If you want to not get “shown up” use a professional pitcher. If he were the 2nd or 3rd guy in an inning trying to hit a HR, then it may be inappropriate. He’s not supposed to try & make an out. No problem with the swing - not proud of the feat but no problem with him playing the game.

I took a look this morning at STRENGTH of SCHEDULE…..Twins are at a modest spot of 21st most difficult after the first 26 games. Cleveland - 27th Detroit - 26th Kansas City - 25th I assume after we play our next 4 games, we may drop another spot or two. No reason to be ashamed about beating teams you are supposed to beat!

NO! Projected by baseball pundits (7 of them) to be a Top 3-9 best reliever in the Game. There are numerous reasons why it isn’t a good move - chiefly, he’s EXCELLENT as a closer & his health is better maintained throwing 65-70 innings Full Out! Nobody is talking about Jax or Stewart being a starter……….really don’t understand the intrigue with Duran moving into the rotation?
-
They jumped up against the rest of baseball after last night. Even with less games - tied for 7th in HR - moving up in Run totals, after the 16. Good point that they’ve played less games - skewing Totals Categories.

Good news is if a guys hitting .125 - .170 or so (7-8 guys) like the Twins had 10 days ago, one needs to hit .300 a bit to get up over the .210 -.220 mark for Average. That’s been happening with Castro - Vazquez - Julien ……..Margot is edging up, & so is Santana. ………Buxton has gone from .198 up to .244 over that stretch…… Farmer needs a couple 3-4’s at some point…….a 1-3 would be a nice start! Getting better slowly - headed toward respectability - not there yet. Tied for 13 in HR after this week’s flurry…..25th in Average at .220 for Team …….25th in Runs….lots of room to move up!!
