He throws 91mph & has shoulder issues? Doesn't sound like an Ace in waiting at all. No thanks. We need 3 things : a real #2 SP, a Right handed power hitting LF (who hits way better than 200) & another solid Bullpen arm. Lewis, Ŵallner, Julien, Lee & Martin (CF) with Miranda backing up 1B and we are set. Will there be growing pains? Maybe, but it's our best chance. Go with the youth movement and spend on thise 3 positions. Trade Kepler & Polanco & maybe Vasquez if we get a catcher in return.

If Brooks Lee can back up 3B/SS/1B then we can trade Polanco & Farmer. Wallner is basically Kepler redux, so he could go as well. Then we would have $30M to spend on a slugging LF & a #2 starter via trade or FA. Martin can certainly play CF and brings speed and a dynamic contact hitter bat. Less strikeouts will help, but we do need power from LF. Buxton? if he can play or hit, would be a bonus, but obviously can't be counted on.

Wallner is basically Kepler redux. Good fielder with power, just needs to hit more consistently. ( So did Kepler for the first half of last season) No way we trade Lewis! Farmer is a better 3B/SS than Polanco and cheaper. He stays. Castro is one of the best utility players in the game and has speed. He stays over Gordon. Austin Martin has finally shown he is ready. A dynamic fielder base stealer and much better contact hitter than Taylor. Brooks Lee may also make the team out of spring training. More options for backups at !B & 2B. Don't forget about Miranda & Severino either could contribute. Sign a RH power hitter to play left field! Been a gaping hole since Eddie left. Trade Polanco or Kepler + a prospect like Winder for younger controllable pitching. Miranda, Lee or if needed Solano to back up 1B. Hopefully Kirrilof mashes and we are good.

My initial thoughts as well. Give the young talent a shot & spend the money on pitching. -

Justin Turner Could Be the Next Boomstick For the Twins
KBJ1 replied to Lou Hennessy's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
At $15M / yr for a 39 yr old DH. No freaking way. Solano at $3M is a much more reasonable option. We need a slugging LF & a SP and maybe 30M to spend for both. -
Kepler & Polanco : good veteran players with reasonable contracts. Always playing it safe isn't how you win the WS. We have young equivalents in Wallner, Julien & Lee among others. Keep Farmer at $5M as insurance. the $20M payroll savings can be used on pitching acquired through trade or signing a slugging LF - Gurriel Jr.?? In a payroll crunch they are going to have to roll the dice with the young players and consolidate two replaceable mid level players with one high end guy who can put them over the top. This assumes Wallner, Julien, Lee, Martin & Miranda are up to the task. It's a worthwhile risk, because they aren't going to get any better standing pat.

Twins rumored to have interest in Kevin Kiermaier for CF
KBJ1 replied to DJL44's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Enough with the mediocre backups. Trade for SP or make a splash & sign Yamamoto to an 8-10 yr deal. He is young & potential upside could be Hugh. Martin should take the CF spot - a high average contact hitter with speed & defense. RH slugger for LF is our toughest hole to fill. Otherwise time to trust in the youngsters- Julien, Lee, Kiriloff, Miranda, Wallner, Martin - to get it done. Trade Kepler & Polanco, keep Farmer and Castro (obviously). -
Reviewing 7 Potential Free Agent Fits for the Twins
KBJ1 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Maeda knows how to pitch and has the ability to be a solid #3 for a couple of years. His fastball was hitting 95 at times in August, when he was arguably our best pitcher. He tired a bit after as you could see his velocity was down. Gray would be nice to keep, but not at $25M/yr. Trading for SP is what they usually and should do. The only free agent that could really make a splash would be to sign Yamamoto to and 8-10 yr deal at $150M and hope you have just created a dynasty. Forget any of those hitters mentioned. Don't need any middle of the road stopgaps. Martin is more than ready to take CF and a RH slugger for LF has been needed ever since Rosario left. That just leaves depth at 1B.- 21 replies

Montgomery seems to be the only one of the 3 leftys who seems consistent, mentally & physically. Trade for SP is more likely what they will do. Wouldn't mind seeing a run at Yamamoto for a possible long term smashing success! Austin Martin makes the club plays CF when Buxton can't. Just need a RH slugger for left field and maybe a plan B for 1B better than in house or Solano.

How Will Television Uncertainties Affect 2024 Payroll?
KBJ1 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I absolutely Hate advertising logos on team jerseys. A disgrace, but in this day & age, it's all about follow the money. Soccer teams are the worst. I can't even tell who is playing because of all the logos. That said, time to embrace the youth movement to meet the reduced payroll. 1st up, Austin Martin: he is spraying the ball all around the diamond & has found his position in CF. Splits time with Buxton. He is ready. Worst case - Lewis backs up Buxton & Miranda, Farmer, Polanco play 3rd. Taylor = gone. Kepler's $10M = gone. Love ya Max, but Wallner is the same player for $9M less. Polanco & Farmer: would like to keep both, but with Julien and then Brooks Lee waiting in the wings, possibly Miranda, something may have to give. Solano, an affordable, versatile bat & player. Kiriloff health is one of our biggest x factors. Unfortunately there is no one else in the pipeline with the Justin Morneau like abilities that Kiriloff has. Lee & Julien are NOT the answer there, so Solano should stay. The gaping hole in LF still needs to be addressed. Make Severino a left fielder! Better: acquire Juan Soto. Unlikely. Still wouldn't give up on Lanarch. Led the team in RBI for the first couple of months. Pitching: make a splash and sign Yamamoto to an 8yr $160M deal. Every other pitcher on the FA market is an older, injury risk and would cost the same. This is a make or break deal that could pay off immensely and be the start of a dynasty if successful. None of the leftys discussed on these pages make any sense compared to a Yamamoto signing. LF, 1B, SP are the three keys to this team being great! If Kiriloff comes back healthy and has the kind of year we all know he can achieve, Martin does the same in CF, we can spend money on the LF, SP spots with the salary savings from losing Gray, Maeda, Mahle, Kepler & Polanco or Farmer. Casto is a Swiss Army knife & should be locked up for sure. Oh, and one last thing - a better bullpen arm than Pagan is a must.- 20 replies

Trade for a lefthanded starting pitcher? Three options
KBJ1 replied to DJL44's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Boy, that's a really short list of Leftys. Sale has always been a great talent, but unless Boston eats some of that contract, not a realistic choice. Aren't there any younger up and comers we could trade for? That would make much more sense. -
Taylor was a needed steadying influence in CF. Was he better than Gallo at tbe plate? A little. I'm all for Austin Martin to come up & take the center field job. But if Buxton is done, we will want Taylor for depth.

Jake Cave to Spend Offseason Training at Jake Cave
KBJ1 replied to RandBalls Stu's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Sad thing for Philly that it came down to that. Several questionable decisions by the Mgr. In that game. Why did he let a guy who was 0 - 22 bat before him? Obviously has not been seeing the ball of late. Wasn't Schwarber also available on the bench? We have a 512 % team in the WS now. -
You have a valid point (damn analytics). Sadly the best pitching staffs are NOT in the WS and two of the top 4 HR hitting clubs in the playoffs are. Still doesn't mean a "swing for the fences" philosophy is the only philosophy that will win it all. It is after all Baseball and defense, baserunning, putting the ball in play, luck all have a part. Without Correa's two great defensive plays, we likely lose. Toronto came within 3ft twice of beating the Twins and the D backs running game was there when the Phillys HR bats went silent. A good running game and the ability to NOT strikeout and put the ball in play will always be there, while HR's may not be. You cannot get to the promised land if you ignore and fail at the other facets of the game. So yeah, sign a pitcher (take a flyer on the young Japanese Free Agent coming here?) Get a RH 4 tool homerun hitter (Juan Soto?- the Padres need to dump payroll) Bring up Austin Martin for speed, Defensive ability, and batting average with the ability to hit to all fields. Lee & Julien = trade Polanco. Walner & Lanarch = trade Kepler. Frees up $20M for what's needed above. No brainer. Quit playing safe and coming up short! Sign Castro, then figure out who can backup 3B/SS & 1B. Farmer makes sense, then maybe an in house option for 1B over Solano. Lastly, one more proven bullpen stud. All this without Buxton. If he can play in the field, he can platoon with Martin & DH when hit, sit when cold. You have to trust your young players and help them flourish. If they struggle, we have depth to get by, but no team can buy superstars at every position. The Mets tried & failed miserably. It's a team - not fantasy roster.

Austin Martin needs to be up here playing center field next year. The free agent pitcher market is going to be way overpriced for the top 3 guys. The lefty Rodriguez makes some sense, but the most interesting flyer for me is the young Japanese pitcher coming on the market. Pitchers from Japan have had a lot of success here for a while now and he could be a real steal. Walner is at best another Kepler right now and with Julien & Brooks Lee coming up there is no reason to keep Polanco & Kepler anymore. Youth movement, unknown quantities, scary I know, but sign a big RH bat and then move forward with the youngsters. Depth at 1B is an issue as well as bullpen. Need people there.

Kepler last two at bats were extremely disappointing for me. In a key playoff situation with runners on base he needed to be aggressive and swing at the first pitch- which was a breaking ball right down the middle! Then he failed at a high inside fastball that he had no chance to hit and didn't protect the plate on tough close pitches and went down looking. As far as HR's - the Phillys hit 47, but none in the last two games and are out! Meanwhile the D backs stole 8 bases, putting pressure on the pitcher and defense and hit the ball the opposite way numerous times to drive in thise runs. Same way Houston beat the Twins in 2019 - three seeing eye grounders through the shift - opposite field- did us in then, while we swung for the fences and missed. Yes HR's are big, but if you can't put the ball in play and strikeout 40% of the time, you will NEVER win. Joe Mauers ground ball singles up the middle with two strikes look awfully good right now. We do need a RH power hitter though - Juan Soto via trade anyone??

We haven't had a high average power hitting 1B since Morneau. I was really hoping Kiriloff would be that 2nd coming. That said, he just can't stay healthy (what else is new with this team) and his future is in doubt. As much as we would love to fantasize over Alonso or Goldschmidt they are too expensive and too old and expensive. Julien or Lee at 1B? No & no. Lanarch or maybe Severino would be the only internal options to fit the position and neither would have the upside of Kiriloff. What we need more is a RH 5 tool left fielder. Acuna, Soto, Judge - you get the picture. We have a bunch of granted above average fielding outfielders, but they all hit 220 with 20 hr, a few SB and a ton of strikeouts. That just doesn't cut it. Then we need to re-sign or replace Gray with similar. Sign Solano or Carmago, hope Kiriloff recovers and has a career year and bring up Martin to play CF. We need hitters, not 220 average stop-gaps in the outfield. Sign Castro, he is an MVP utility player & has surpassed Gordon. Sorry Nick, but trade him. Farmer needs to be insurance for SS & 3B. Keep Kepler & Polanco for now with the caveat that they can and would be traded during the season depending on the teams performance and the readiness of young guys coming up. If we trade for above mentioned stud OF, then Walner or Kepler are gone. Buxton is likely done, but if on the small chance he comes back and can play, then Martin is the backup and also takes Famers backup spot with Castro or Miranda waiting to be backing 3B.

The Front Office Was Right to Bet on Their Roster
KBJ1 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Comes down to.health, as usual for this team. Don't really see Correa recovering in two weeks, Buxton should be shelved. Stewart, Paddock coming back give the bullpen hope. Lewis is key. If he can't go full tilt, they are doomed. Maeda clearly deserves to start game 3. Ryan is is not needed in the first round and should be left off the roster as long as the last man in the bullpen isn't Kuechel, Hendrick, Sands, Winder, Moran, Floro or any of the other stiffs that have pitched out of the pen this year.- 34 replies

Unless Buxton can run & play in the field, he is a scratch. Stevenson for his speed & defense. Maeda #3, solid veteran who knows how to pitch. Ryan throws too many pitches and gives up too many HR. Off the roster until round two. Funderburk because you have to have more than one lefty, period. It comes down to Lewis & Correa - they should sit for the next 10 days Stewart is a must as well as Jax has struggled of late and needs rest. Paddock is a tough one, but could be valuable in relief, but so could Varland. Ober, Ryan, Kuechel, Floro are the odd men out for round one. Winder, Sands, Headrick? NO, NO & NO! Gordon, Gallo, Alcala - no chance.
