My offseason review to this point of the offseason
KBJ1 commented on Brandon's blog entry in Blog Brandon
Agree, let Martin play. I think he will do very well. Still, not signing a RH LF bat like Gurriel is going to be their downfall. The Sp & Bullpen should be OK. Santana basically fills the Solano role. Not enough. I guess Wallner plays LF this year. Castro, Farmer, Santana make an excellent utility group like last year. But not addressing their two major needs sure looks like treading water and pissing away yet another window of opportunity. Buxton, Correa, Kiriloff & Wallner & a SP are going to have to have career seasons for them to have any chance. -
The Twins Are Placing a Clear Focus on Intangible Traits
KBJ1 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Intangibles are important, but can only carry you so far. Their lack of a RH multi tool LF power hitter id likely going to be their downfall. Betting on Santana (a good fit for 1B platoon) to provide all of that missing player is wishful thinking. A player like Gurriel OR a #2 pitcher were needed.- 54 replies

The only one on this list who might prove worth the price and be reliable would be Montgomery. We already missed out on Gurriel who can hit, run and field, so Soler for the same price isn't really an upgrade. Santana as a platoon/PH/DH is fine, but doesn't solve our lack of a RH OF bat. Trade some/ all of what we got from Seattle to the Brewers for Devin Williams would be more useful as well. Belanger is dreaming if he is worth 12 yrs.

Does Signing Kiké Hernández Make Sense for the Twins?
KBJ1 replied to Cody Schoenmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
No. We already have Austin Martin, a high contact, high BAve. Hitter who has speed and plays excellent defense, including CF. Hard pass! -
Gurriel would have been better for the same price. But Soler mashing in LF is better than what we have now. But since we have now signed the aging Santana to platoon at 1B, I don't see this or ANY LF masher being acquired. CF will be fine with Castro & Martin regardless of what Buxton is able to do. So a LF masher is needed more than anything (outside of a #2 SP) . But alas will not happen now that we have signed Santana to platoon at 1B. Sigh.
-
Castro makes Gordon redundant. Wallner makes Kepler redundant. We missed the boat on a RH 5 tool LF in Gurriel. An aging Santana is wishful thinking as a platoon at 1B. Waste of money when our real need is a LF right hand bat. No to Taylor. Austin Martin is ready and I think will be our leadoff hitter by mid-season when Buxton goes down.

Twins Daily 2024 Top Prospects: #10 Tanner Schobel, 2B/3B
KBJ1 replied to Cody Schoenmann's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
How about we quit drafting utility infielders and draft outside the box (our usual box). How about trying a big lug of an outfielder who may not look like a prototypical ballplayer, but knocks the cover off the ball. Aaron Judge anyone?31 teams passed on him. -
Examining the Fringe of the 2024 Twins 40-Man Roster
KBJ1 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I like Gordon, but Castro is even more versatile and makes Gordon redundant. Sands, Balazovic, Winder? God help us if that's all we have and they end up on the roster. Trade someone for a bona fide closer or even more for a controllable #2 SP. We need a RH power bat for LF (a 5 tool guy like Gurriel would have been great) and sign Lewis to a long term deal NOW!- 37 replies

Are Twins fans underrating Joe Ryan and Bailey Ober?
KBJ1 replied to Rik19753's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Highly doubtful that we make a big splash with a signing/ trade for a SP. We will have to hope what we have is good enough. That said, the cheapest and smartest way to address pitching is to trade Pollo to the Cubs for Devin Wiiliams. -
I'm all in on acquiring Devin Williams and building a lock down bullpen in this day and age of 5 inning starters. No way they trade Lewis. He's going to be the face of the franchise for years to come. Polanco, Kepler, Lee, Richardson could all be traded. Not Ràya, one of the few pitching prospects we have actually developed. Trading for a #2 starter is going to be extremely difficult. That's why Williams and a lock down bullpen makes the most sense.

Edouard Julien v. Brooks Lee: Whom Should the Twins Trade?
KBJ1 replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I solidly believe Martin is going to take over CF and have a great year, career. Regardless if Buxton can play the field. Only way I trade any of Julien, Lee, Martin is if we get a Pablo Lopez, signed , sealed & delivered. Not an easy proposition to fulfill. -
With Castro and Martin also ready to make a splash (and bat leadoff, hit 285 with 25 SB, play CF, I predict) Gordon is redundant and may not even make the roster. Farmer - yay! Finally a smart move. Alcala is just a reminder of Ryan Pressley's record breaking run and 2 WS with Houston. So far a terrible trade. If they are so worried about payroll, even though it sounds like they will still have plenty of revenue, then dump Polanco & Kepler -for at least some bullpen help or a RH bat in LF. They are also redundant and cost $18M more than Wall er, Julien & Lee combined.

The Twins have to do something. And MLB has to come up with a more balanced revenue plan like the NFL. The league will not survive if a half dozen teams spend 3x more than everyone else. Would also reduce the ridiculous $$ contracts. No more deferment of salary in the extreme either. The players union leadership may not like it, but the average player should. Would raise salaries for 60-80% of players, while reigning in Superstar contracts. You want a comparison? Stagnant wages for 40 years and CEO salaries up 1000%. Capitalism eating itself alive is not sustainable.

Twins Should Hang Onto Jorge Polanco, at Least for Now
KBJ1 replied to Nash Walker's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
While we all Love Polo, Farmer is better defensively, especially at 3B & SS. Depends on the trade package we can make. For a closer -Yes! Polanco, Kepler + prospects for a #2 Starter? You bet. Give him away for salary reasons, No!- 104 replies

Wallner makes Kepler completely redundant. Duran? He is in the top 3 with Pablo & Lewis. No team has a chance in the World Series without a top flyte closer. In this age of 5 inning starters, a lock down bullpen is of utmost importance! Paddock had better be in the top 10 if this team is even thinking of competing. Raya? Irrelevant for at least a year or two. Why is he even on the list?

The Twins' New Broadcast Tandem Could Be Generational
KBJ1 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Agree that Provus will do a fine job. Morneau adds thoughtful insight, but for TV sometimes less is more. Gladden, rough edges and all is great for radio, though his play by play isn't as good as Provus.- 35 replies

5 Gifts for the Twins in 2024

A right hand 5 tool player for LF. Lourdes Gurriel fit that bill perfectly for an affordable price. Sucks that we didn't go after him.- 24 replies

Can Twins Rookies Avoid the Regression Bug?
KBJ1 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Lewis will continue to impress. Julien will need to develope against leftys, but with his plate discipline, he should be able to. Wallner is a Kepler clone and may exhibit similar frustrations. We need to keep Farmer for depth, bring Martin up for CF and eventually Lee for whoever is hurt.- 38 replies

My Budget-Friendly Blueprint to the Twins Offseason
KBJ1 commented on ZachB's blog entry in My Budget-Friendly Blueprint to the Twins Offseason
Adell sounds intriguing and I'm not against trading Vazquez, but he has excellent mentoring g & defensive value and would not just give him away. Carmago is unproven and we have nothing in the pipeline after him. Montas, eh, coming off inury can take time to improve. Monty is a pipe dream, not gonna happen. RH LF 5 tool player is our 1st or 2nd biggest need. Sad to see Gurriel off the market. And yes, you always need bullpen help. No Winders, Sands or Hedricks please. -
He did yank his SP too early in the past, but last year our SP were near the top of the league in innings pitched. Part of that problem in the past was that our SP sucked and the Bullpen was worse. Last we had better options and he used them well. If you want more HR, fill the gaping hole in LF. Sign Gurriel! Please! If we can't trade for SP, then at least get Devin Williams so we have a deep bullpen that can pitch 3-4 innings a game.

Video: Brock Stewart: the Twins' Underrated Bullpen Ace
KBJ1 replied to Nash Walker's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Stewart saved the bullpen on the first half last year. Look forward to more from him plus someone like Devin Williams being acquired. With a bullpen like that we may not need another Ace starter.
