  1. Topa to the IL with a knee maybe makes this make more sense. It's a volume game for relievers I guess.
  2. In a weird year, there will be a lot available but it feels a bit like the free agent frenzy after the NFL draft. Gonna have to move fast.
  3. Such an old beef none of the links are good anymore but we are talking about a fanbase that still talks about current moves in the spirit of the great Tom Kelly. No grudge like a silent, forever, midwestern grudge. I though the gall was maybe that it was unacceptably too positive. It was a bit rosy, tbh. Had Mackey himself posted it, maybe you could justify a little butt hurt. Relying on everyone to know the unspoken grudges is a bit silly, its something I might post in the literal thread discussing other media views on the Twins. Should I have to worry about hurting a feeling by posting something? Glad to hear Brock had an appropriate level of BYTO red-ass coming on board, it's so fitting. I miss word filters. I truly wonder how much of the early moderation was the BYTO element.
  4. I wish they would have kept up the volume of episodes through the entire year last year. Seeing the postseason episode from last year kinda reminds you that there was a ton of good content throughout the year. Once a month would be nice and upbeat, but I'd also like an episode or two of the tough times. It can be a big part of outreach to new areas of fanbase. I really enjoy seeing the human side of these guys.
  5. You see bad strategy and failure, I see top 5 staff in the game last year and projected top 5 staff in the game this year. It's not luck. Volume is a central part of the strategy. Correa only failed one physical that mattered. Steve Cohen took all the risk out of that deal. I never mentioned Sonny, but man I hated that Brock Stewart injury pickup.
  6. Not what I said but, anyway. How about taking hyperbole to new heights? It rhymes, I mean, rhythms. Of the names you mentioned, there are some who have been injured and some who will be injured. It's not cheap to avoid risky investments, its good risk management. I've been screaming that as loud as I can. They have a specific strategy for pitching that does not include large free agent signings or spending prospects on fully developed guys. It's quite smart, actually.
  7. Was discussing this very thing with friends a couple months ago. The gambling thing really feels like a parallel to the online poker craze of a few years ago. I was surprised by hearing from friends who I thought would still be loving the gambling but like me we're pretty much over it. I've done it, got the experience but now can't see anything but huge conflicts of interest coming. We all basically agreed that it was a house of cards due to come down eventually but this story seems like a huge wrecking ball. Professional sports in general are in trouble with their financial models. They wouldn't be open arms for gambling if they weren't facing TV revenue going up in smoke without a good replacement. Professional golf is a few years ahead of the rest. Interesting they changed the story to a criminal investigation. That seems to guarantee it will stay a story, generate a full investigation with discovery and dispositions and subpoenas and other fun stuff. They will have access to Ohtanis bank records. That the MLB is saying they are not investigating probably isn't a big deal at this point, they know it's out of their hands very quickly. They are probably under legal advise to say nothing. A suspension of Ohtani at this point would feel just like the Harbaugh thing a few months ago. "See! We did something!"
  8. That's an insane statement when we actually have a real time example of the Oakland As. The stated goal of being a sustained winner is a pretty tough line to balance with going all in in any particular year. They are currently doing a pretty good job of that, now that they own every player in the organization we shall see if they can maintain. I haven't seen the most simple explanation of the stated question of the article. The one and only reason they keep trading for injured pitchers is that that's what is avaliable. That's it. That's the entire answer. Even Pablo, our beloved white whale, had arm issues still after a Tommy John. It's a good thing they traded for that injured pitcher. Pitchers are damaged goods, almost by definition. It's not an exact science.
  9. Wut. Yes, quite "inexcusable" they chose not to employ any actual bipeds with a functional appendage suitable for a vintage underhand lollylob. Yes, Smithers, yes! We will chose our pitchers from this illustrious list of luminaries. Lotta takes been in the drafts folder for the first, inevitable injury. Start the games already, the content machine needs fed.
  10. Lotta takes here that have been cued in the drafts folder just waiting for a little something to go wrong.
  11. I'm not sure what exact policies are driving the tough market for post arb players other than some prospect promotion incentives but they are both the part of the market struggling right now and also the most likely group to be active in the bargaining process. It stands to reason they are not excited about what's happening now. It will be interesting to see how much changes when the TV deals settle vs CBA language. It may still just be a play for expansion. I also wonder about guys like Tony Clark. Absolutely essential to have former players in the process but how equipped is he for billion dollar negotiations? It's not a knock on him, it's just a skill that every owner comes fully loaded with and he would have to learn fast. Professional golf is dealing with much the same thing right now, the rank and file of the PGA tour are a large part of the negotiations and have been ran circles around when a serious group of very tough negotiators came along. Had they had the Aurther Blank et al group in their corner from the beginning they would be in a much different position. Pro golf and baseball are both going to be tough worlds for the run of the mill guy.
  12. That's a 146 win team if I've ever seen one!
  13. That's no difference in having Jeffers/Vazquez DH, they both are in that lineup.
  14. But Duran doesn't have an arm injury. I was nervous when I opened this but now I'm good. Take the time to get healthy, the bullpen will be fine.
  15. I dislike the rule that allowed Correa to bat twice in five hitters. We had to do that cause we didn't have enough kids when I was growing up.
  16. Really like the idea of getting a Soto or Winkler game action against the older guys. They will almost certainly pick up something for their journey to the bigs.
  17. Whats the foolproof strategy that wins championships? Surely there is a thing Ol Scrooge McPohlad could just write a check for. Until I hear about it, the best strategy I've heard is to get in the tournament as much as possible and try to get hot. It's the universal strategy regardless of payroll, That the Rays are doing that year after year, in the AL east and with that payroll level, is damn impressive. The wise man focuses on the inputs while the fool believes results are instructive.
  18. Should be a good one, very possible June lineup and on the TeeVee to boot.
  19. I hesitated to click this one, knowing it could go one of two ways. Yup, sure enough, just another payroll article. Sigh. I've come to the conclusion that 98% of the true payroll haters are actually in the media. Self fulfilling prophecy.
  20. First base will take care of itself, be it Julien or something similar. AK as a primary DH does not bode well for his future in the organization. If he's not trusted with the glove the bat will have to be excellent for him to have a home. This FO and Rocco have made it pretty clear that gloves play ahead of sticks unless the stick is to good to ignore. AK is in a tough middle ground and this is a very important year for his career.
  21. This may sound odd, but I think we may have had good Kepler all year last year. He struggled coming back from an IL stint in late May for the hamstring and apparently had a heart to heart with Rocco mid season but it also matches recovery from a hamstring. The mention of launch angle reminded me of a post I made last season, May 7th to be exact. I don't post it to boast, because I also was ready to give up on Max midseason and had forgotten, but because I wanted to look back at the numbers I had snipped. When compared to the year end numbers everything is stable, still well up from his best years and the launch angle came around. Barrel, Hard Hit and Sweet spot % were all career highs, just as they were pacing in early May. My theory at the time was that the lack of launch angle was hurting production and that he was actually playing very well at the time. He immediately followed my proclamation with 6 horrible weeks and I felt dumbish. I'm starting to look at 2023 Kepler as a solid overall season with a horrible stretch in May and June that in hindsight was probably highly effected by the IL stint for the hamstring from 05/13 - 05/29. I think its probably more accurate than crappy first half, amazing second half. He's a very good baseball player.
  22. My first swing on equivalent prospects the Twins would need to send would be something like Festa, Culpepper, Keashall and say Headrick or Winder maybe? It's a lot. I do think Varland is quite bit more valuable than Thorpe who is a nice prospect but only has 30 innings at AA. Varland too close to MLB to be valuable for the Sox. Competitive windows and all that.
  23. My initial thought reading the article was 2 of the first 3, and item 4. So 75 games in center with a 120 OPS+ and healthy in October. The healthy in October being the most important part. That probably ends up a 4+ WAR season which we would all be delighted with. If we got the games without the OPS+, not so great but with a healthy October its still a success. Good post that reminds us what MLB success actually is. My chart listed in the previous, unrelated post, shows 5 of 8 seasons that would be considered a success. When combined with a healthy October, it becomes a fantastic outcome. Have I mentioned the healthy October being the important part?
  24. You were so close on your numbers but so far off on your formulas. That's why math teachers make us show our work. It's an industry standard calculation. Contracts signed get a discount because its guaranteed money.
