  1. Maybe, but those that are managing the culture need to stay. Things like that matter.
  2. It's perfectly reasonable to expect a contribution somewhere in the range of Kuechel or Discoflani as a high end. There's plenty of value in that role in the back half of the season and I'd really like Dobnak to pitch his way into that conversation. Give me 7 starts with a sub 5 era, I'll take it.
  3. They also stacked the switch hitters at the bottom of the order rather than splitting Jeffers and Martin. I think a lot of the stacks he makes are related to the pinch hitting spots anticipated for later in the game. If KC brings a lefty for Julien that lefty gets to face Farmer, Margot, Buxton. Advantage Rocco. If they think Smith is unavailable I'd love that matchup against that other lefty. Same with Wallner spot, if they bring a lefty they get 3 RHH against the lefty.
  4. Finally got around to highlights this morning and that first double was very reminiscent of 22 year old Buck. Sheesh. Slightly reckless but it was in a tight spot of the game. I would not have minded just taking the single there and stealing second. It looked 100% effort for sure.
  5. I like that there aren't any outfielders. A lot of these guys route to the bigs can be paved by proving they won't kill us in left field. Of the entire list, I really want to see Dobnak get back on track. Not just to get something for the contract but because he could easily be everything disco was supposed to be and he's easy to pull for.
  6. A partial platoon probably does make some sense but I don't know what they value most. If they want to hold Farmer back to pull Julien late then that's the way they would go. That's why I say it matters more what other flexibility they lose, to me it's not so much a third base question.
  7. This is a thread about what he said and how he reacted to the injury, not a global discussion of injury rates or the new training staff. I'm glad to hear he felt like it was a cramp and I'd take the over on his estimate but there is still a chance its very minor as he wanted to stay in the game. 3 weeks is fine by me. This woe is me Minnesota crap has to stop. A tweaked quad is not a reason to get rid of Royce Lewis ferchrissakes. It's tough but we really need to take the Royce Lewis approach to this, not the Minnesota doomer. If the legacy he leaves is the positive attitude he will be on a Mt Rushmore of one in Minnesota sports history. Be more like Royce. I love this kid.
  8. I think what it comes down to it who is getting more playing time due to that person not being flexible. It probably comes down to Wallner vs Julien against LHP and at this point I'd probably pick Julien. I believe in Wallner against lefties in the longterm but Julien is showing enough that's worth seeing more. Factoring that Castro is the more flexible player, outfield and speed, Farmer makes more sense to spot at third for a longer term. I don't think the defense at third is that much of a factor as its pretty close.
  9. Man, this kid. The quotes and attitude are something else. I was just mad I didn't score, pfft.
  10. Miranda didn't even bring a third base glove to spring training, I'd have to think he's out of the running at third along with Martin. Third might be the one infield position where Farmer fills in and they backfill him, maybe with Castro and bring up an outfielder or Martin. Larnach hurting too. This one sucks.
  11. Gotta love starting the season with a full blackout. Let me know what happens. 😔
  12. Its a small sample size issue most likely. In 2022 he was death on lefties, .519 OPS. In 2023 with the Rangers as a reliever he was horrible against lefties but then as a starter with the Royals he was neutral, good against both. So a 24 inning sample of bad against lefties. But I wouldn't be surprised to see Rocco go reverse on someone down the road if the splits justify. TD would explode.
  13. Save that sentiment for the playoffs, you'll get it. Different factors today and throughout the long season.
  14. If I had my druthers the whole team would be switch hitters with neutral platoon splits and power plus defensive versatility. My druthers are also left wanting. Also, this is the big leagues, learning is secondary to winning. Later, when Rocco gets out-managed™️ by (check notes) that other guy, we may well get to see the lefties get at bats against Will Smith.
  15. I like the lineup. I like getting the lefties at bats against lefties here and there but against an opening day quality lefty isn't the spot. When you actually play out the game theory it might not be hard to work the early season pitch count up and then target with the lefties off the bench in big spots. Julien might play half the game still. I'm watching the lineups for where Rocco has built a late game spot to get 3 lefties in a row against a RH reliever. I see a 6th or 7th inning spot where a RH reliever might have to stare down Kepler/Julien/Wallner/Kiriloff. I like that for us. I don't know much about Angel Zerpa but having two lefties in the pen should make it an interesting managerial chess game. It could just as easily be a lefty on lefty in the Royals favor depending on how the game goes. I'd rather not pull the PH trigger as early as Rocco might but if there are ducks on the pond lets try to break it open. The later game situation might never come. I need a "don't make me tap the sign" meme for lineup creation. Its not about starters anymore.
  16. I'm at 91 wins. They could go higher but will be in cruise control for two months.
  17. Prospects like Lee and Walker rarely have in history comps in most organizations. Sure, you can find someone for the Yankees but the Twins don't have a great prospect history. It doesn't help that the best prospect was a catcher, Lewis and Buxton are different player types. Lee and Walker are different and comps around the league make more sense. I've got Astros comps for both, Alex Bregman and Kyle Tucker. The more I look, the more similar they are. Sign me up.
  18. Back on topic, this seems relevant. Even though reports are that the Twins wanted Miller more, Woo certainly would have wooed Twins faithful but then what would we do with this news? https://www.mlb.com/mariners/news/bryan-woo-to-start-season-on-mariners-injured-list On the bright side, Miller is the less injured of the two so maybe they took that into consideration in who they wanted. Still want to know who Seattle was asking for though.
  19. Yup, obligatory reminder that this is not a grocery store. The player has to want to participate as well. Had she been in residency at Mayo or something and Minnesota was the natural fit I'd feel more like they should be interested but as far as I know he was never into us.
  20. The more I see of this group in the behinds the scene videos and interviews the more impressed I am with them. From a leadership perspective they do so many things right. The culture is what gets you through a long season. Early warning for the game thread lineup and move complainers. I'll be heavy on reminding that the regular season is not the postseason and is managed differently. Look at how they used the roster in the postseason to know what they really think and who they trust in situations. Lo and behold, Rocco almost fell perfectly in line with the Twins Daily lineup card police when push came to shove. The regular season has may different factors so we will see lots of odd lineups and moves. I probably wont actually say anything, but I couldn't give less than a crap about who bats 7th vs 9th in June. Built for October and all that stuff. This team could easily win 95+ games if they stay on the pedal but the luxury of a bad division will skew the over and under. The priority for this staff is setting up for a postseason run.
  21. I think it was Phil Miller said no compensation on Twitter. Would have been nice to get a little cash or something but this probably happens much more than we realize league wide.
  22. I'd have to think a low to middling prospect would be a great return for Goodrum, if he's getting playing time in Minnesota it's likely bad news all around. From what I hear, cash considerations would be greatly appreciated as well.
  23. Whats the third tool? In all seriousness, good for him. I have a feeling Ron Washington is going to overperfom in a stacked division.
  24. Every pro sport has a run of the mill level pro. In golf they are called mules. As far as I know there is not yet an equivalent name in baseball. https://nolayingup.com/blog/what-it-means-to-be-a-mule
