  1. Are not all baseball payroll limitations self imposed? I'm stupidified that long time fans of the team thought anything else was going to happen. Like what did you expect really?
  2. Bingo. If you are giving a F to ownership it's because you assume you know more than them. The hubris is astounding. To give an F you have to ignore that they are probably doing the right thing for the long term health of the franchise. Getting a splash of Bally money for this year doesn't change anything. Much like the real estate market, having dry powder is going to be very handy in the next few years. I'll give a D on messaging. It would be an F except for the fact that they were communicating honestly and accurately. It's a tough message to deliver but a PR hire would be handy. The self-imposed modifier needs to stop. Bring back word filters! IYKYK Again, when was the last time Aaron complained his very good, possibly great MSG chicken cost too little to make? As for the front office, it's an A minus. I'm still waiting to hear what they wouldn't give up to Seattle but overall, sometimes doing nothing moves the ball forward better than a move to make a move. All spots have been addressed in a very difficult environment. This roster is better than last years playoff roster. Period.
  3. I've seen this report quite a few times but the missing piece is always what Seattle demanded that the Twins wouldn't give up. I like that they run a tight ship with leaks but I'm also very curious.
  4. The only question is how many times we have to hear this. I did, so now you have to.
  5. Cue the Lewis doesn't get RBIs takes.
  6. To be fair, they were shortstops at the time.
  7. I'm confused about the premise of a loss of momentum frankly. Good young healthy players everywhere and all we hear is but Sonny! I'm not sure Twins Twitter is the best sample of fan sentiment. It feels like giving a field sobriety test to a bottle of Boones Farm. Even then, the scores are pretty decent. The Athletic is running a similar survey, let's see how that compares.
  8. Guys, guys, guys! I just figured out why they are being so cheap! They have save 10m for Buxton incentives! Let's check the payroll number after he cashes in. On a slightly more serious note, coming through the year with just the knee is probably a good thing overall. He didn't hurt something else trying to compensate and by and large he spent much of the year not taking a beating. The rest of his body probably appreciated the rest.
  9. The addition to the 40 man wasn't exactly a reward. He would have been exposed and selected in the rule 5 if not. I suspect he's a year or better away and they would have preferred to wait.
  10. I was very impressed with Julien improving the defense so much in such a short time. The are lots of markers that point to him being a late bloomer just because of all the snow he dealt with but he's mostly conquered a language barrier, MLB debut, horrid to passable defense at a whirlwind pace. Quite impressive when you put it all together. It's a good thing if Lee pushes him off because he's better with the glove. It's because Lee is good, not that Julien is horrible. I just realized that Julien at 1B makes a perfect situation to bring in a Rhys Hoskins type every two years. It would be a monster platoon.
  11. The depth is a strategy. Don't be surprised if they draft another couple "shortstops" this year that can drift off the position and hit somewhere. That somewhere will likely be another organization in most of the cases. Even if Lee locks down 2nd base like we all hope and Julien is a stud DH/1B, they will still be drafting high potential middle infield bats as they are playing the asset game instead of the develop game with prospects. For a drafting strategy it makes plenty of sense, other positions will be sprinkled in but drafting the asset with the most pathways to success is really the only way to go. Then keep the Lee's, that can play defense and hit from both sides and trade the rest. Arraez is a great player to watch but had far too many limitations to be the one that sticks. Julien could go the same direction but has more upside in power and position than Arraez. Luke Keashall, we hardly knew ya, but thank you for your service.
  12. There's plenty of pitching depth as well. Good thing they have 6 months to sort out the playoff roster.
  13. A full year of Julien and Wallner, a healthy AK and second half Kepler cover it for me. They should be much better against righties but there was more on an issue against lefties, which Farmer helps. Farmer's fit as everyone's backup and a rock to steady the kids is far more valuable than the incremental difference of Larnach stealing playing time from Margot. They also can't use two bench spots on outfield only players.
  14. Farmer is as secure to this roster as Kepler. Certainly not at risk from any outfielder.
  15. I thought about that after typing but just left it. Not a rating, just who is in the similar roster spot. Several of them are a clear greater than though. Added a clarification.
  16. Looks about right. After much consternation over the offseason we can start to compare with last years opening day roster. https://www.mlb.com/news/twins-2023-opening-day-roster My summation 2023 > 2024 Gallo > AK Solano > Santana Gordon > Julien Miranda > Lewis MAT > Margot Larnach > Wallner Gray > Ober Mahle > Paddack Maeda > Disco Lopez, Pagan, Alcala, Moran, Sands > Stewart, Topa, Jackson, Staumont, Okert Some possible downgrades but a lot of this looks better to me. There is significant reason they believe in the group they have. LFG!
  17. All of them? Miranda is #1 with a bullet, both for his career and what it does for this club if he can get right. Larnach I agree with but he's going to show the same thing he does in AAA, he has to show against major league breaking stuff. Lower key but as important as anyone is Kirilloff. This needs to be the year he puts it together.
  18. I could easily see a Castro, Buxton, Margot outfield this year but more likely Kepler stays in the field and Buck DHs for the partial rest. In a playoff lineup Kepler plays and Wallner sits. They will chose Kepler and Margot over Margot and Castro or Martin.
  19. Well done, it absolutely makes sense but I don't know that it will generally permeate lineup creation as a primary factor. The only LH on the bench in that game that would have been a tough decision to start was Josh Lowe. He was benched for Issac Parades at 3B and Harold Ramirez at DH. Both good hitters on good years. I bet the Rays would do the same thing again. The factor of the 9th best RH hitter vs a decent lefty is the most likely culprit in the dataset. Rosters just don't have that kind of makeup to get a real test of the theory. In the Twins case that would be Vazquez. Most managers would chose the Kepler defense and flexibility of the 2nd catcher on the bench. Against a lesser lefty, that Rays lineup rakes over time. Good pitching still beats good hitting the majority of the time. In the regular season, they probably have done something like that several times with success. Against a lefty having the playoffs of his life, who knows what might work. Looking at the game log, maybe they could have pinch hit someone to change his groove. It might have confused him enough to get him off track. Leave it to the Rays to be the first to pinch hit backwards. Spring training is a good reminder with all the lineups and pitching moves that different factors are important at different times in the season. Regular season lineups are created far differently from postseason. This is your regularly scheduled reminder that analytics is not simply the use of data, it's knowing which data is important at the proper time. The Rays now have another data point.
  20. Not great asset management for most small market teams, except when they start to get a nice collection of major league players and have surplus trade chips. Then they need to be used to plug holes and make the team better. I'm not sure Steer and CES are anything more than depth on this roster anyway. If we truly intend to contend, the value of the veteran plug in player is significant. They have done an excellent job building depth throughout the system and the drafting of dozens of "shortstops" is not an accident. They are assets to be moved around. Misty eyed listicles of where are they now prospects with a winning big club are bragging articles, not sad tomes like the old days.
  21. This is basically where I'm at. I would have preferred the last spot have options but these things tend to work themselves out. Just like last year, the rookies will have to break down the door and I'm fine with that. It's quite a lot to expect Martin to do what Margot will be able to do his first taste of the bigs. This is supposed to be a championship roster, not a rookie training ground. To that end, while I agree all the guys with options are guy we would not want to see optioned this is a year where if Kirriloff struggles he goes down. Wallner or Julien might see some slump time, who knows. Depth is good and if everyone is beating down the door both Margot and Santana are easy flips at the deadline. As for Miller, if he can't hit a lick at A ball the glove doesn't matter. He's behind-well, a whole lot of guys. I was going to list them but I'm lazy and that's a lot of work. Please don't be sad for his departure. This is part of the plan. Draft tons of middle infielders and don't worry about a future fit, they are trade candidates. Hell, we might be in a spot where the infield is set for 5 years. Whatever will we do to find a spot for Ben Ross?
  22. That's my point, enforcement is so difficult it's not really designed to be an enforced policy except for egregious conduct. Its more of a general agreement to try to stay between the lines. Leaks would be police-able, but it would be very, very ugly. Again, its specifically called out as prohibited conduct. I can't find Article XX(E) that would explain the enforcements but I would assume agents could lose access or certification, GMs suspended or draft picks taken. The agents being certified by the PA complicates things tremendously. It looks like the PA is just lobbing a reminder here but they should have lobbed it at Ricketts instead of Pohlad. As for the dollar figure, I disagree that the number is the problem. I read it as the mention of a specific player is more-so the issue and the mention of specific teams by the player side would be more of an issue. I listened to a ton of radio interviews with GMs during winter meetings and every one of them was choking when specific names were mentioned. It was obvious that was a point of emphasis somewhere. They also seemed very comfortable talking in general terms even though it was obvious the only person they could have been discussing was Ohtani. Joe could have just as easily been talking about a trade for some player that happened to make $30m as well. Also worth noting that Kiki's agent can say what teams he is looking at, as long as its true. If the Twins weren't talking to him, then they could file a complaint. I said earlier it was a violation but I should have said possible violation. Maybe there is smoke around Kiki. We won't know for sure, that's what millions of lawyers and billions of billable hours are for. They will never be engaged here, its not worth the juice.
  23. They don't have to be drafted to be developed. Another source for pitchers that fit this model is high schoolers drafted by others that they can trade for cheap.
