    Nice article, and I totally agree with you. With the number of pitchers that have quality history behind them that would probably accept a short term "prove it" contract there should be an opportunity to get a decent 2 or 3 starter. Maybe sign a big quality FA starter, and trade for another? Then get someone who can serve as a decent closer and hopefully have enough money left over for Nellie. His overall stats with Tampa were down enough to maybe bring the asking price down a little to work it out.

    The only way I see the Twins trading Polo is if they get an established MLB starter AND a top prospect. Polo is that valuable. With his talent, history, and contract, he should pull in a heck of a sure deal plus a pretty good bet on a prospect.

    I give him a D+. At the halfway point it would have been D-. I do think he had to learn to lead more than he has in the past when Cruz and Berrios got traded. I don't blame the lost season solely on him, but I feel he contributed to the beginning of the downfall. I don't really know how much freedom he has to call the shots or if the FO has a big influence there. I agree with others his management of the pitching is what drags his grade down a lot. I assume he stays for another year and hopefully will learn from this year. After all, baseball is a game of failure. Even a good hitter fails 2 out of 3 times. But you learn from that. Rocco is smart. Let him learn.

    What a season. How much more could go wrong in 1 season. From the front office missing so badly on FA picks Happ, Shoemaker, Colome, and Simmons, Maeda going down, Pineda missing time, so many relievers struggling, Buxton missing so much time again, I go keep going on and on. So in my mind hopefully we got the bad luck out of the way this year so next year will be better. After all, The FO has to do better in FA pick ups, They darn well better work out something with Buxton. At least we discovered Baily can pitch, and the silver lining in losing is we picked up some nice pieces in trades. Now lets see what happens with the new CB talks and hope we have baseball on time next spring!

    I give FO office a solid B over all. Coming into this season it would have been higher, but this year has exposed some flaws. Rocco didn't really have control of the clubhouse IMO and really didn't need to with a few of the veterans like Cruz, Donaldson, even Berrios around but now he will have to step up and I question if he will. I do think he improved some over the last month so I'll give credit where its due. The FO whiffed on Happ and Shoemaker, but all FO's will miss at times, unfortunately, both of these where at the same time to magnify the mistake. The FO made a couple of nice looking trades (at least at this time) to help for the future. I see hope for next season. Sign a couple good starters, solidify the pen, sign a ss, and I see a pretty good team. Looking at the past body of work from this FO I see no reason to doubt that they can get the job done!

    I think a 1 year with a mutual 2nd year option would be fair for both sides depending on cost.

    From report before the trade deadline they had agreed on the base and couldn't agree on incentives. Time to get to work on a deal guys, you got 5 months or so to come to an agreement.

    I believe there will be a few players available as free agents this year after the the big ticket shortstops sign that will want a "make good" 1 year contract similar to what Simmons signed this year. If not There are always some utility infielders available via trades for low level prospect types that the Twins have plenty of that could fill the hole for part or all the year if worse came to worse. I would rather do that than to keep bouncing Polo back and forth between 2nd and short. As you say, we have a decent frontline defense so lets not mess it up.

    I have to say 2011. Maybe because its the most recent, but it just kind of feels the same. 93 felt different in the way it was the injury after injury that at that time had me feeling like a bounce back the next season was a possibility (little did I know).

    He was high on the list last fall which makes me wonder if this is an off year for him. I guess it comes down to numbers and where he fits in. Hate to give up on a guy that was rated so high after 1 bad season, but I don't have the full knowledge of who else to chose from coming along in the system or the input of the coaches and scouts that see these guys all the time. Remember, he was supposed to be on the roster for the playoffs last year before he broke his arm wasn't he?

    #1-Polanco getting healthy and back to Polo again #2-Ober is my choice as a surprise #3-A full 162 game season. I don't feel I can put Ryan here as the trade-off was enough of a loss to balance the gain IMO

    I agree that the shift is killing Max. He is a good athlete that should be able to beat the shift. Yes bunting down the 3rd base line would be one way, but why can't our hitting coaches help him learn to go with the pitch the other way to left field? I really believe if he could improve that he would get more pitches he could pull and use some of his power to right again. I think a .270 avg. with 15-20 homeruns would look a lot better then his present stats, and with a few more base hits to left (or bunt singles) he's shown he has the ability to steal a few bases.

    I go along with pitching first and SS next. At this time it seems there will be a few high quality SS on the market so maybe a mid tier SS could be signed on a reasonable deal. Otherwise, the trade option would seem to be the way to go. Just please leave Polo at 2nd. Try Gordon, Martin, Polacios, or whoever but let Polo stay at 2nd.
