IMO Varland should be put back in the pen for at least the rest of the season. The next couple of weeks ar critical for the playoff hopes. It looks to me like they will need to win at least 6 of the 8 vs Cleveland, and hopefully sweep the Royals. Now that would be a statement. With a series against both coming up, the time is NOW!
He has earned the nickname of Minnesota Moose. Who knows what the future holds but odds are in his favor with how hard he hits the ball. The biggest question to me is how he responds to the next slump (and there will be one).
Without knowing what other teams asked for in return for some of these trades, its hard for me to criticize not making a move. From I have heard and read they all wanted our top prospects. For a rental piece that is too much IMHO. The only thing that looked like a miss was the Paxton deal.
KC has made some good moves since the end of last season. It seems that bringing the new guys has helped the younger guys learn how to win. Certainly a team that should be watched.
He looks like the most consistent pitcher on the staff at this point. He would for sure be a starter if they make the playoffs. Now he just needs to figure out how to pitch to KC.
I agree that Falvey and Levine have done a decent enough job building a farm system that seems to be bearing fruit. IMO that's why ownership is trying to cut payroll. Why pay a bunch of guys several million when you can put fairly decent players out there for league minimum? I fear they are going to try TB model and trade off expensive stars for prospects, keeping the payroll at a minimum. I am starting to think they really don't care that much how many loyal fans they have. so long as they make a buck!
It seems that most people on this site are pretty sure they make the playoffs. I'm not so sure. Another injury to any of the top 4 pen arms would probably sink them. Add in the fact that both Buxton and Lewis are so injury prone, Correa with his planter injury, and who knows how Miranda comes back from the terrible HBP and there could be a lot go wrong.
With the deadline passed, can they even trade anymore? Wasn't the rule changed? I was under the impression they could only sign released players. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Rocco manages by a stat sheet, so I wonder how it is that he stacked the lineup with RH hitters, while the stats say Manea is much better against righties than lefties. Probably wouldn't have made a whole lot of difference, but just curious.
If Stewart doesn't turn it around they have a questionable pen at best. As stands right now they have Duran, Jax, Alcala that are reliable with Sands being the biggest surprise so far. That's not going to cut it. They need help!
Well said! This team is young and on the verge of being a great team. A small investmen (comparably) to continue the upward trend, and they recoup the $$ as revenue increases!
