I've been waiting for Polanco to finally get his bat going and he picked a good time to do it. I'm looking forward for Polanco to start his challenge of the MVP along side Buxton and Correa. I was very happy that Gray pitched a very good & strong 4 innngs, looking forward to see Gray have a very successful season. Right now Smith is my favorite RP, because he's so dependable which is so needed. Duran and Pagan has given us some very nerve wracking games but they can develop into very good relievers especially Duran. Congratulations Lewis on his 1st extra base hit.

A great effort by our young players, it was wonderful. Very excited for Royce getting his feet wet and getting that illusive 1st hit. But it was Winder that stole the show. This is the way to break in our prospects. Letting them get their feet wet 1st and let them gradually get used to their surrounding, not throwing them in the middle of the lake and say swim and watch them drown.

How Long of a Leash Should Dylan Bundy Get?
Doctor Gast replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I wasn't crazy when they signed Bundy but I thought they had a plan. He had some success in the shorten season and in the beginning of 2021 so if they could limit his innings I thought that they could capitalize on some of his quality innings. When Bundy came out of the gates very productive I was very pleased. But when he was begging for more innings and they were giving them to him and people were lauding him as the ace of the rotation I became very leary. I knew he couldn't maintain that success and that he'd eventually fall, but not this early. I don't see a lot of upside w/ Bundy and I don't have a lot of patience with him. I don't see him in the BP either because the problem isnt him peterring out and then gets smacked, he gets smacked from the get go. The hitters have figured him out and he's not adapting. We have Winder & Smeltzer that are pitching well, so I don't see any reason to keep him. But I'm not Wes, if he thinks that Bundy's problem is easy to fix and during this time off if he can fix it then I yield to his expertise. But if FO is doubling down on their mistake again, the fans won't stand for it.- 46 replies

I've been wanting to say this for awhile and this seems like a good time. Seth, you must have made quite an impression on Royce. Because he has adopted your look! That must have made the difference on his tremendous performance out of the gates. All kidding aside. Lewis is indeed a rare breed, his exuberance carries over to his game which I have no doubt that he will step up to this challenge as he has done to all his challenges and mash it head on. God bless you Royce and a speedy recovery for Correa.

Orioles 5, Twins 3: Five Solo Shots Shatter Twins
Doctor Gast replied to David Youngs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My cap goes off to the Orioles because they came prepared for this series. IDK what the pitchers plan was (although it seems that they pitched a lot inside resulting in Correa getting hit) but it worked, even w/o their ace their SPs gave them the chance to win in every single game. I imagined our pitching plan was to get their hitters to chase after pitches because the stats show that their chase rate & SOs were very high. Orioles hitters showed a lot disciple by laying off those pitches leaving our pitchers in a predicament. They even got to Duran! We underrated the Orioles and weren't able to readjust. I wasn't able to watch the game but what I gleaned by the game thread was that Archer (after 1st few games of 1st FB then refining his slider) now this game he started to work on his change up. Missing ST and about 2 1/2 seasons of playing time it's a long process to get him back to what he's capable of. Lance Lynn missed ST the year he was with us and he never really got going until he left.- 31 replies

Is It Time to Start Worrying About Austin Martin?
Doctor Gast replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Lewis has always been #1 in my book but that's not to say that I'm down on Martin. Not at all but I'd focus him more in the OF and not waste his time at SS or even 3B and 2B because he's naturally good at those 2 positions and more needed in the OF. Martin will be invaluable at utility on the verge of super utility (my definition of super utility is being able to play CF & SS adequately). Arraez is an ok utility player not super, not great not even very good but he can get on base. I go along with the census that we don't have to worry about Martin's bat. He might not be a 20-30 HR hitter but what is for sure is he'll get on base and steal them. To some extent he will develop some power to go with his hitting. I wouldn't think about trading him unless we can get a fantastic offer. -
Twins Daily 2022 Draft Coverage, May 5
Doctor Gast replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Holliday(SS) would be my 1st choice and if he's not available then I'd hope for Susac(C), We have enough corner OFs/ 1B/ DH types, I'd certainly would want to go there 1st round. -
Carlos Correa and the Twins' Fresh Vibe
Doctor Gast replied to Nash Walker's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Veterans the Twins got this off season overall are team players. They want the team to do better, it's not a self thing. Correa never tried to grab all the attention for himself. Off the bat he stated that this Buxton team thus disarming any disput over who was the "Alpha male" on the team. Love his attitude of willingness to work with Polanco and Lewis and his optimism for this team. He's a stablizing force to keep us out of any long losing streaks. -
Like Epravens said this MN Twins were #3 when the season started in 2021 and regularly in the top 5 until sometime after the 1st series against MILW. It'll take some time for the Twins to prove they belong with the top teams again. They'll get there, they've just started to heat up.

Is the Twins Rotation for Real?
Doctor Gast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Archer should have been mentioned in this article. His positive influence on this young staff is invaluable. Besides he has given us 4 quality starts with the opportunity to win all of them. He has pitched many more innings than Gray so far and Archer's will eventually will be stretched where he can pitch 5+ innings. Once he's 100% there isn't a pitcher on the Twins roster that I'd trust more to pitch in an important game than Archer. I believed this rotation was for real once ST was over. Their overall success will be based on how well Baldelli will manage them. If he over depends on the short relief and burns them out which in turn burns out the rotation, I don't see things ending well. I don't see any work horses yet in our rotation. I don't see Bundy maintaining to pitch 5+ innings through out the season. Right now I have doubts about Gray's condition. Ryan, Ober and Paddack aren't used to pitching a lot of innings. Archer has pitched many seasons of around 200 innings pitched per season but not pitching much the last 2 1/2 seasons. I believe the main reason that we haven't won a post season is that our rotation is shot come around post season time. I will continue to clamor the solution to this problem is to establish our long relief. Not only that it helps take the pressure off of short relief and the SPs, it also helps get our prospects feet wet, Winder is an excellent example of this, the reason he had such a great debut was that he was ready via long relief. We have great depth at SPing. Besides our main 6, we also have Winder and Smeltzer that are ready with Balazovic, SWR and Canterino that could be called up to pitch long relief and be SPs if need be.- 44 replies

Ryan and Ober are some pretty darn good pitchers but they're young. On their previous outings they have been stretched to go beyond 5 innings, on their following outing they barely made 4. It's hard to find young pitchers that have that endurance out of the gate. In the off season it was understood that we didn't have any work horses, when we got Gray there was hope that he'd be our work horse but now there's doubt about his condition. There was suggestions about adopting the piggy-back system, now I don't think that's really neccessary eccept short term with Archer. Nevertheless there is a great need to establish a strong long relieve corp to relieve the short RPs and SPs but right now we have no one. If not there'll be another meltdown with our short RPs due to over stretching, stretching the SPs hasn't been nor ever will be the answer, normally that produces burn out and injuries. Smeltzer should be called up and stay even when Gray returns because of the need at long relief.

Reevaluating Minnesota’s First Base Depth
Doctor Gast replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think many people have their priorities all backwards. Many believe at CF we can throw any bat out there and that's ok, we don't have to go outside the organization for help. But at 1B many believe we are missing some primary players we have to trade for someone to fill that position. CF is a key position that is super important and hard to find anyone who can man that position and in the past we have suffered tremendously there in depth. 1B is not an important position, we don't need a spectaclar glove or someone that has a lot of range to play there. Here any bat can play there and not cause a lot of damage. Everybody wants Arraez's bat in the line-up, 1B is the best place for him even if he's a little short. 1B we a lot of depth, there is no problem what's so ever. IMO this an area where we can trade from not vise versa- 48 replies

The Next Twins Prospect Promotion
Doctor Gast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
W/O a doubt Lewis should be called up. He has proved that he can hit AAA and play SS, We need him together w/ Correa to learn the ropes and to get his feet wet. If he hits then give him some time in the OF to keep his bat in the line-up. If he can't send him back down until later. Canterino will be next, although Smeltzer has been doing well (he's been ignored) so it might be sooner rather than later. I'd like to see some SWR at the end of the season. Although I like Steer he is buried at 2B/3B so I don't see him see him being called up but is used as trade bait when needed.- 55 replies

I thought the Twins were going blow away BAL, but Wells did a great job of limiting this high octane offense. We had great defense together with Smith coming in to put out the fire and Duran doing a great job as a closer. Miranda got his feet wet in the MLB, I'd like him to have more momentum coming in. I see him plattooning at 1B.

Twins' Bullpen: Don't trust (most) Anyone Over 30
Doctor Gast commented on stringer bell's blog entry in stringer bell's Blog
Good point Dex, legally I think the Twins can't force in the BP and I don't think he would want to . Archer is used to pitching in big games. Once he's ramped up he should be awsome but coming off surgery, there's some doubt wether he'll comes back as a work horse where he was before. -
Twins' Bullpen: Don't trust (most) Anyone Over 30
Doctor Gast commented on stringer bell's blog entry in stringer bell's Blog
Smith has been fantastic but I wouldn't pitch him 2 days in a row, Coulumbe has been pretty good and I'd like to give Duran a chance at closing. The rest I don't really put a lot of trust in. Yet Baldelli relys so much on these guys! He really needs to rely more on long relief but now that Winder is pitching in the rotation we really don't have anyone to go long. That's why they should have brought up Smeltzer. On paper Archer does look like a good candidate to be a good BP pitcher but actually Archer has 5 pitches, FB, slider, CU, curve and cutter (which PIT forced him to use but has since dropped). His FB looks pretty good, his slider has been his best pitch and seems like he's still working on to get it back, maybe after he gets done with his slider he'll start working on his CU and curve. Along with that Archer has a starter mentality. For so many years he has had it and the few times that he had been used in that compacity of reliever he hasn't fared as well. With some patience Archer will be much needed when post season comes around as a starter. -
Prospect Retrospective: Cole Sands
Doctor Gast replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I like Sands and was pleased that he got his feet wet, that's what it's all about. But IMO Smeltzer should have had the nod for the long relief spot when Winder was pomoted to SP. Even after Winder returns to long relief Smeltzer should stay on. -
SWR is my #1 but I agree with Dman that it's nice that Stankiewicz got the honor and that SWR will get plenty of accolades in his time in baseball.

I'm crazy over these 4 hitters plus we have others that are close behind and others that have that potential to be great. I'm sure you'll do pitching and we have a bunch there also to be excited about.

What the Twins Can Expect from Jose Miranda
Doctor Gast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thanks Ted for bringing up this interesting topic. Last year I suggested Arraez at 1B, people rebuttled by saying he too short. Yet I'm happy to see Arraez playing 1B because I believe that's his best position. Miranda should've been called up last year becaused he played so well and this ST he played very well and I'm sure he was sure that he'd be finally being called up but that didn't happen. I'm sure that he was dissappointed and that probabally affected his play down there. It has been a pity that they hadn't gave Miranda some time at the corner OF positions to give him more opportunities to get his bat in the line up. He could have been called up after ST. Now that Arraez is at 1B you'd think that he'd be called up. But right now IMO Lewis has shown that he can easily hit AAA, because of his flexibity where he could sub 3B as well as CF abd SS where he can be given more time to be groomed by Correa, So right now he could be passed over again.- 29 replies

Twins 9, Rays 1: Garlick Powers Twins to Win
Doctor Gast replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I thought because TB was so familar with Archer, I thought they'd really clobber him especially since they were so ready for Bundy. But he did pretty well while working out the bugs on the fly and gaining endurance. It's a shame they signed Archer so late nevertheless I'm glad they signed him because in the long run he'll pay hugh dividends. McClanahan pitched pretty well but luckily we were still in the game by the time he tuckered out and we blew the game wide open. I thought they'd put Winder in the 5th so he'd be able to get the win. Don't know why they are saving him.- 24 replies

Yeah, I'm leary about Archer starting against TB. I don't think there's any team that knows him any better than TB. He's up against McClanahan IMO their best SP right now. Hope Archer surprises us.

IMO chemistry makes any team better. If you enjoy working with the other players and their's a spirit of mutual comradery, good things are bound to happen. One of the reasons I stated before on why we should sign Archer was his willingness to mentor players. Comradery is great to encourage each other to be better and feed off each other's successes.
