No room at the inn. In the days of 9-11 pitchers on a roster, there was a uniform for Candy. Now you have to ask who he replaces: Lewis, Castro, Polanco, Farmer, Solano, Julien. Who goes? Perhaps some teams gets all anxious and offers too much for Farmer and Solano, but that is close to a zero chance.

So much angst follows Twins trades. They go for it and try to improve and the bottom falls out (Steer, CES, Hajjar, Cano, Povich, etc. for J. Lopez and Mahle). The fan favorite goes for a good pitcher (P. Lopez for Arraez). These were fair ideas and good trades. Previously, guys like Larnach, Winder, Martin, and others were off limits. Trades are hard to make because there must be a real interest in your players as well as a return offer that makes sense. I want to know what San Diego wants for Hader. Varland? Larnach and Winder? I don't have any idea but hopefully Falvey has some active, friendly conversations about a whole host of possibilities. The Twins have been fun since the All Star break but they still are pretty close to a .500 team. I'm listening on virtually every player, but mostly looking to just add a relief pitcher.

Glad that the Twins were able to sign Walker Jenkins and hope he moves quickly (3 years?) through the system to become a star. What was befuddling was the total lack of any conversation regarding Jenkins in the last ten days or so. The consensus, apparently, is that there was an agreement and that the deal would be easily completed before the deadline. Then, the Twins go down to less than two hours before the kid could waver or some slip happens (seemed completely unlikely) to screw things up for this draft pick. Seems like there would have been a few articles/ speculations somewhere along the line. I mean, we did see/read numerous articles on Skenes, Crews, Langford, and Clark across various media. No matter, it is done - get him to the plate.

Should the Twins Shop a Young Corner Bat?
tony&rodney replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
One thing seems obvious - the Twins will play to win and any consideration of having a young(er) player work through a few things (slump/fielding) will not be a thing this year. Wallner needs to get hot and Julien needs to continue to hit and have good at bats or either/both will get sent down.- 54 replies

Should the Twins Shop a Young Corner Bat?
tony&rodney replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm not sure either Wallner or Larnach ever amount to strong regulars, but both could be successful if given an extended opportunity. Wallner is a little awkward, yet he has speed and has shown some ability to adapt. Wallner has a higher ceiling than Larnach in my opinion. Gallo has worked hard and made some decent contributions to the Twins. He has also declined beyond the point of being a regular lineup presence and could easily be traded or cut. Kepler still has enough athleticism to provide some value until someone (Wallner?) shows that they are a better option. Larnach is on the outside looking up, a difficult situation for him. The trade value of all four left handed hitting corner outfielders is pretty limited. Unless Wallner goes on a strong hitting streak, he will almost surely wear a Saints jersey when Polanco returns. Gallo seems like the most fair drop when Lewis returns. Most of the time it seems like an unexpected injury changes the roster composition. Polanco should be back soon and Lewis is still a month away, so plenty of time for someone to get hot, decline further, or get injured or even traded. I'm not betting on anything.- 54 replies

Week in Review: Powering Up
tony&rodney replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I would say that the Twins were trending up. The at bats are slowly improving and the Twins have enough talent to go on a run. The schedule during the remainder of the season favors the local nine and several players are feeling better about their skills lately. -
Week in Review: Powering Up
tony&rodney replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Walker Jenkins situation (whatever you want to call it) is a little befuddling. Every team clearly had time to know what number was necessary to sign the players. The flow of information and communication should have all made a signing just a matter of finding the most convenient date to meet in person. It would surely be odd to find out that negotiations were a part of any conversations post draft. The only scenario remaining is the dreaded "failed physical". But doesn't that follow an agreement in principle on a dollar amount which is then pending a clean physical exam? Confounding/confusing at this point. -
Great win for the Twins. Wallner sure messed up on his single to right field. With Kepler running and it looking like a close play from all angles, Wallner has to go to second base and force the cutoff man to make a decision. If the ball is cut, Wallner is out and the run scores. If the throw goes through, Wallner is at second base. These mistakes are crucial to games. Still a wonderful team victory.

Joe Ryan is the Twins' Most Valuable Trade Asset
tony&rodney replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm curious what initiated this post of the idea of trading Joe Ryan. That said, the Twins should always be listening. What if San Diego offered Jackson Merrill, Ethan Salas, and Dylan Lesko? But we can see that Washington is struggling with the haul they received for Juan Soto. So it becomes a question of looking at whether the Twins are capable of winning or need a rebuild. A team with Carlos Correa, Pablo Lopez, Joe Ryan, Bailey Ober, and others doesn't look on paper like such a bad team. I would not likely accept the above mythical offer from San Diego. Ryan stays.- 56 replies

The Twins do not have any player that stands out defensively. Max Kepler is the closest but he has had a few glitches this season. On the other hand, the Twins have been pretty consistent in making the basic plays and Carlos Correa is the gold standard for turning every routine ground ball into an out.

The Cardinals GM was very specific about trading for pitching. This trade has a near zero probability for multiple reasons. St. Louis wants pitching (Ober or Ryan would draw their attention), PG has a no trade clause in his contract, the Twins are at their limit financially, and AK is a part of the Twins future as well as providing value in the present.

Pablo Lopez was originally signed by Seattle and played in their system until being traded to Miami. He never pitched for the Mariners MLB team.

Just an observation - Brooks Lee looks ready for AAA. Watching his at bats this season on numerous occasions this season (milb.com), Lee has turned from softer contact to driving the ball with authority on a consistent basis. I'm not seeing his games in person and thus not fully in tune with his progress, but Lee seems ready for AAA.

Good win. Luis Castillo and Seattle are a formidable task. Let's hope the Twins are geared up for Kirby tomorrow and that Pablo Lopez brings his A game.

A switch hitter who can steal bases and plays everywhere has value. How much is debatable. Castro is not an elite defender, but certainly passable. He hits ok, but swings and misses a bit too much. He does seem to bear down with guys on base. A utility role seems like a viable position for Castro even though he has been in the starting lineup quite often in the past month. Mostly, these last positions on a roster are a matter of opportunity and timing. Pratto, Helman, Gordon, Martin, and Castro are all guys just looking for an opportunity. Castro has done decently with his shot.

How Much Does Sonny Gray Get Paid?
tony&rodney replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Hopefully he pitches the remainder of the year like his first ten starts. You make a good point about early speculation but I'm not wanting to sign Gray for market value even if he does finish the year strong.- 22 replies

3 Bats for the Twins to Monitor at the Deadline
tony&rodney replied to Nash Walker's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This would have sounded way off a month ago, but Brooks Lee looks like he has figured out his swing. I mean the hesitancy seems gone and he is attacking now. 30 doubles and 10 home runs already and solid defense makes him a guy to advance soon. Can he handle MLB pitching yet? I never would have thought a month ago.- 32 replies

How Much Does Sonny Gray Get Paid?

I was thinking that three years and about $57 million sounds good for Sonny Gray. I do not think the Twins should be in on him.- 22 replies
