Joey Gallo Is A Land of Contrasts
tony&rodney replied to Lucas Seehafer PT's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Joey Gallo is now a Twin. He will be put into the lineup every day until mid June at the minimum. We hope he can be a decent player. The move was confusing to me for a range of reasons, not the least is that he is a three outcome bat which does not exactly scream ticket sales. Maybe the move works and maybe it doesn't, but it is done. Why didn't the Yankees, with their little league right field and desire to have a LH outfielder who can field, consider Gallo? For the multitudes who love analytics, my guess is that the Yankee analysis was very low on the potential of Gallo. All that said, wouldn't it be wonderful if Gallo hit 40 home runs, stole 20 bases, won a Gold Glove, and hit .265? -
Huh? I have zero interest in IKF. You confused my post with someone else. Also, Kepler has likely requested a trade. He has hit a dead end. Of course, the Twins do not need to trade him, but they added Gallo for $11 million and cannot cut him without paying the entire salary. Polanco and Kepler are the two Twins I have enjoyed consistently but Max will be gone by Opening Day.

I love Greinke but he would not pitch for the Twins if offered $20+ million. Guaranteed.

Some fair suggestions but Adames is off the table as far as Milwaukee is concerned and Eovaldi is a stretch in cost. If the Twins were in on Eovaldi, they would have had an interest in Swanson (not that Swanson was). One of Will Smith or Brad Hand is worth a shot. The trade market is what is left and I hope the Twins only use their 40 person players to acquire players. More and more it seems it is time to see what the young bucks have at the MLB level. Alas, Max Kepler is as good as gone. Maybe the Yankees send us Oswaldo Cabrera for Max.

Seems pretty close to the team, doesn't it? There may be a few trades still, particularly Max Kepler (just think he asked to go). Not that it is important but this sight seems to have the best information (minimum goes to $720,000) on salaries: https://www.baseballprospectus.com/compensation/cots/

Perhaps this is the Twins way though as pretty much everyone practiced it a few times. -

Gordon should get close to 500 plate appearances. I can't think of another Twins corner outfielder who deserves more. -

Twins Need a Minnesota Miracle
tony&rodney replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Sometimes it is worth asking yourself ..... inconsideration of the recent history of the Minnesota Twins and their policies on signing free agents and taking into account the apparent strategies used by the current front office .... Where would you sign if you were a free agent? This is why the Twins need a miracle.- 81 replies

"Stepping Back" Isn't an Option
tony&rodney replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Maybe I'm wrong but it seems like Major League Ready wants the Twins to have a strong core developed from both within and through trades that brought in solid prospects to develop and then sign a difference maker. I believe MLR once referenced signing Rodon or had a design for the Phillies guy next offseason. Mike is saying the same thing to some effect. The developed players should be supported by an actual difference maker like Correa as opposed to signing the same train of 3-4 mediocre players for $10 million each. Polanco or Arraez are pretty good players. A trade for say Edward Cabrera and Max Meyer. Would Sonny Gray and Caleb Thielbar bring in a player like Masyn Wynn? Perhaps just as important is whether our management would put the young guys in the lineup and on the mound. It can happen. Then again, maybe you both mean something totally different. I thought I would try to merge your ideas.- 53 replies

It might be a good idea to consider checking the attendance numbers as well. Fans still matter in baseball.- 53 replies

No worries because Swanson never considered the Twins for a minute. I like Lewis and Lee. I'm willing to put Lee at SS this year. There isn't a single starting pitcher on the team to lock up. Gray won't sign unless he gets paid stupid money which won't happen. Maeda is beyond the time to lock up a pitcher. Mahle has a bum shoulder that had him throwing 85 in his last start. Shoulders are very problematic, although I do hope he can recover. Ryan is already locked up by the rules in place. That leaves Ober, Winder, Varland, Sands, Henriquez, and Woods Richardson. I hope they all compete for a Cy Young, but it is completely unlikely to sign any one of them to long term contracts. Randy Dobnak is the sole winner of a long term contract signed by a Twins pitcher, which is totally noteworthy.

"Stepping Back" Isn't an Option
tony&rodney replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Quite a few people have mentioned the Giants as "desperate", "foolish", or "irresponsible. I can understand a fan that just didn't want Carlos Correa at shortstop for the Twins. I can't understand the Giant references. They have a fine shortstop (Crawford) who has one year left before his numbered is retired by the Giants. They also have one of top ranked shortstop prospects (Marco Luciano) in the game. The Giants won 107 games in 2021 and were devastated to only win 81 games last season. They always turn a profit and they are the only team in baseball that pays their own way without taxpayer support, as in they built their own stadium. The Giants have the best actuaries in baseball. They are smart and decisive, not desperate. Just saying.- 53 replies

Is "Fishing in the Ocean" the Best Option for the Twins?
tony&rodney commented on Hunter McCall's blog entry in Hunter McCall
Do you believe Manfred is bringing back the super ball? Maybe for a few televised games in Yankee Stadium, but otherwise unlikely. The AL Central in 2019 was pathetic. The 2023 season brings a more balanced schedule and both Cleveland and Chicago are clearly better than the Twins. The truth is that our Twins are much closer to competing with Detroit and Kansas City at this stage than to Chicago or Cleveland. Things can change in a hurry though and I still hope for 2-3 trades and a decent free agent signing. The Twins did make a significant play when they signed JD, but it is noteworthy that the longest pitching contract has gone to Randy Dobnak. So no, the Twins don't go out in the ocean. They made just one trip to the end of a pier for Josh Donaldson. The fish in the ocean are all scary. The Twins need to fish in a lake for Muskies, Northern, or Walleye. Right now they are fishing in a pond for Bluegills. Now I like sunnies but it takes too long to clean enough sunnies to feed a roomful of people, so I catch a pile of walleyes and northern instead.- 13 comments

Upon reflection I want to apologize to Nick Nelson for making a sarcastic remark that Sano could also rebound. Nick Nelson (and others) puts in the time and effort to write articles for Twins Daily and I do appreciate that. It makes sense to try and see the positive, which I mostly do. Sorry Mr. Nelson. It is fair to say that I am not a fan of 200 strike outs or the style of baseball that Gallo brings to the game. I think this move will further alienate the younger fan base which wants a faster pace of action.

Maybe, but I was just saying the Padres did get positive value from the trade.

The Padres rode Rogers very hard early in the season and burned him up. The trade was poor because the Twins paid for Rogers entire salary and also paid both Paddack and Pagan. The Twins continued use of Pagan demoralized the team. Finally, Rogers was used to acquire Hader. The Twins lost this trade.
