No dilemma at all. Keep Vasquez. Camargo looks like a potentially good backup, but he's not ready yet. Even with a down year by his standards, Vasquez can still be an asset to the Twins. As far as trading him, I doubt we could get much value to make that option worthwhile. Keep him.

I realize that Nick Gordon seems redundant in the wake of Castro taking much of the same role, and performing well, but I still feel like the Twins haven't really given Gordon the playing time or proper opportunity that he needs. He's gone from infielder to outfielder to so-called super-sub but has never really had a defined role. I think his best years are still ahead of him and I'd love to stick in the outfield, anywhere out there, and let him thrive. Or not. But give the guy a chance.

... Adding a Gray-level starter or someone better than Kenta Maeda needs to be the plan ... Not so sure about that. I'd love to have either Gray or Maeda back, but their age and injury history make me think otherwise. I'm guessing that in Gray's case he'll be wanting a fairly long deal, but I don't see him as an effective starter 3 years down the line. I'm assuming Paddack slides into the starting rotation and maybe Ober and Varland can be solid too. Getting pitchers like Aaron Nola and Eduardo Rodriquez would be sweet, but I doubt the Twins would pony up the money. No thanks on Blake Snell. He's coming off a great year, but he's been too up and down over the course of his career.

Twins AFL Report (Week 3): Desert Dogs Go Undefeated
Doctor Wu replied to Steve Lein's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
It DOES seem like an odd, if underwhelming, bunch of players that the Twins have in the AFL this year, but then again, I'm not a scout or in the front office, so I give them the benefit of the doubt. At least it's good to see a young pitcher like Jordan Carr performing well. In any case, thanks for another thorough report!- 7 replies

The Latest On Boston's Pursuit of Thad Levine
Doctor Wu replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree with that. Boston has never seemed like a patient organization in that respect. Both the ownership and the fans there want immediate results. -
Interesting idea to compare the two teams. One thing I like about the current team is the potential going forward. I think the nucleus is much stronger this time around, not to mention some of the prospects we have in the system.
-
I also appreciate these updates, even if the ones like today aren't very encouraging. Yikes! I certainly hope these players can show some improvement going forward. Even if it's just one or two players, but I can't say I even see anything impressive from any of these AFL players yet.

An Offseason To-Do List for the Minnesota Twins
Doctor Wu replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Lots of moving pieces in the infield, and don't forget "old man" Correa at shortstop. My biggest concern, looking ahead, maybe not to start 2024, but certainly within a year or so, is where are you going to play Brooks Lee? With Correa at shortstop and presumably Lewis at third base, where does Lee play, especially if you also have guys like Julien and Kiriloff (if healthy) playing, not to mention Polanco if he stays. And then there are the backups who can start like Farmer, and Castro, and even Solano, all of whom were productive this past year. Just too many bodies, so someone (or multiple players) will have to be sent elsewhere. Honestly, it's a logjam, but I don't have any great suggestion. What we do with a top prospect like Brooks Lee? As others have suggested, it would be beneficial to his development if he knows where he is going to be playing this coming year.- 76 replies

I'm cautiously optimistic about Paddack going into next season. It was cool to see him finally pitch the final couple of weeks, and he looked great during his short time in the playoffs. Having him in the bullpen was a nice post-season bonus, but I definitely see him as a starter next season. And if both Gray and Maeda are gone we will need that extra arm.
-
I'm probably in the minority here, but I hope Gordon can make the team next year. Of course, if we also have Castro and Larnach, and even a guy like Taylor coming back, then maybe that's not so likely. Gordon is versatile, but I think mostly an outfielder at this point. I still think Gordon hasn't reached his full potential and the Twins should try and see what he can do for a full year while healthy. But we have a real logjam coming up, with in the infield and outfield, with some of our better prospects knocking on the door. Who do we trade or jettison?

I honestly can't picture Miranda in the outfield. May not be as scary as when Miguel Sano played in right field, but still ...

Is the Twins Clubhouse Special?
Doctor Wu replied to Thiéres Rabelo's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I realize that he wasn't a great fit for this year's team, but I really really miss Astudillo. What a fun player! I have no idea about the vibe or atmosphere in the Twins clubhouse either, but it DID seem like we had a good mix of players this year.- 6 replies

I'm excited about those 2 pitchers also. Do you see Varland remaining as a starter or getting used in the bullpen more often (as he was the final month of the season) ?. Some of the other pitchers in AAA, or ones that brief stints with the big league this year, will also be interesting to watch their progress. And hopefully it WILL be progress and not too much a lack of it. Guys like Woods-Richardson slipped a bit this year, so I hope he for one can get his mojo back.
-
It's only a guess, but I think after some initial frustration, Gray ended up liking his time with the Twins. If he's saying that he's open to signing with us again, that doesn't shock me, but then again, money can be a huge factor and if someone else offers him a multi-year with big dollars, I can see him going elsewhere. Frankly, his age and injury history (nothing major, but he always had IL stints in the past) won't help his bargaining power, but after the terrific year he just had, he's in the driver's seat.

We have turned the page, and the past is the past. The potential of this team is exciting!

Overall, it was a satisfying season. We made playoffs, and not only did we win an actual game, we won the first series! How many years has that been? And even though Houston beat us, we took one game in that series and were competitive. I remain hopeful. Lots of positives to draw from this season. The big concern is the health of the players next year. Can Buxton play center field again, and play it like he used to do? Can Correa play a full season and stay healthy? Can Royce Lewis do the same? Will we see Nick Gordon again? I'd love to bring back guys like Taylor, Solano, Castro, and Farmer, but with so many prospects knocking at the door, who will be on the team once April rolls around? We may likely lose Sonny Gray and/or Maeda to free agency, but I think Paddack will be a solid addition to the rotation next year, and maybe the front office can swing another trade and/or signing. To sum it up, we are looking MUCH better as a team than we did a year ago. I'm encouraged

Not only do many people forget that Rooker was part of that original trade package, many forget that, as you noted, he was DFAd by the Padres AND after another short stint, by the Royals too. Man, if you can't stick with KC, that's pretty bad, But credit to Rooker, he turned it around with Oakland this year. But by this time next year, who knows how it will all look.

Twins Youth Burning Them at the Worst Time
Doctor Wu replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Very true. This is the post-season and we are playing a very good team with lots of experience and confidence. It ain't gonna be easy. It's not like a series with the Royals Most "experts" are picking the Astros to prevail, but I still think we got a shot. Got to keep focused and confident.- 57 replies

I didn't watch the game, but that seemed like a good old fashioned smackdown. After that first inning, that was a huge hill to climb, and even though the Twins seemed to have enough runners on base, once again they couldn't get enough of them to cross the plate. Just have to pump up the volume, hope for better pitching, and get more runs tomorrow. An easy equation, right? But it's the playoffs and anything, or nothing, may happen. Just got to hope our Twins rise to the occasion and force a game five.

Twins Living By Platoon Continues to Pay Dividends
Doctor Wu replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I didn't know much about him when he was with the Reds, but Farmer has really impressed me this year. And the fact that he came back from the horrible beaning this summer and immediately started to contribute and help us wins games again ... man, that was huge. This guy has no fear, A total gamer!- 15 replies

Also in that Baltimore game today, our old pal Aaron Hicks homered, but it was all for naught as another ex-Twin, Mitch Garver, hit a grand slam for Texas. And in more ex-Twins news, Baltimore used both Danny Coulombe and Yennier Cano in relief. No sign of Kyle Gibson yet. Did he make the playoff roster?
-
Yes, Wells is on the playoff roster. He pitched 1 scoreless inning in relief today. although in a losing cause.
