Why are the Twins Waiting on Louie Varland?
Doctor Wu replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Maybe not so young, no, but he has never pitched more than 144 innings in a season (last year). This season he is already sitting at 122 innings. If I remember correctly some folks were concerned with him tiring down the stretch last year, which is why I wondered if they would monitor his innings the rest of this season or not.- 33 replies

Another nice flashback. Straker looked like he was going to become a good, or at least decent, starting pitcher after that breakout year in 1987. And then, he disappeared almost as quickly as he appeared. I had wondered what had happened to him. No appearances after the age of 30?! But good to hear that he is still working with young players in the minors. Good luck to you Les!

Former Twins, Where are they now? 2024 edition

Gordon has had a disappointingly mediocre year in Miami. I'm sure they Marlins expected, or at least hoped for, a lot more. Just like we did. -
A question for Seth: I realize they are all very young, but which players in the Dominican Summer League look to be like legitimate prospects?

Thanks for another good week in review! Good overview, but seeing all the players on these various lists still makes my head spin. I understand the Injure List and the Bereavement List, but still puzzled about this constant need to put players on the Temporary Inactive List and the much-maligned Development List. Why not a Currently In-Limbo List?

Another good article about an ex-Twins player, and an obscure one at that. Looking at the stats, Darwin seemed like a pretty good player, but I have to admit that I have absolutely no memory of him at all!

Speaking of resting arms, I wonder what the plan is for young pitchers like SWR and Ober for the rest of this season. I would think that both of them are nearing or have exceeded their previous career high of innings pitched (I haven't checked the stats, so someone will have to back me up or shoot me down on that hypothesis). But with crunch time coming up these final two months, it will be nice not to need to over-tax the arms of those pitchers that are not accustomed to pitching so many innings.- 33 replies

Maybe we haven't seen that many BIG moments this year, at least in the way of walk-off homers or acrobatic catches, but Buxton has been consistently good, especially the past 2 months. Seems like he is finally in a groove and comfortable at the plate, not swinging at those seemingly unhittable balls that the other poster mentioned. Pleased to see his batting average up and the strikeouts down. If he can stay healthy down the stretch he should be a huge contributor to this team.

Minor League Report (8/4): Wichita Literally Walks it Off
Doctor Wu replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I was about to ask how much longer they will wait to call up Topa from this rehap stint. No reason not to call him up this week.- 27 replies

Perez had a good first outing with the Padres. He's had a very up and down career, but still seems to get enough outs when necessary. -
Rough start for Prielipp, although the number of strikeouts in that short outing was encouraging. It will be exciting to have all these new draft picks debut in Fort Myers this week. Good luck to them all!

That would help, plus I'm also hoping that Ober doesn't get too tired pitching all these innings during the next 2-3 months. We need him in top shape to maintain this ace-like pace.

Great game for Henriquez too. Three impressive innings as a starter. But was starting him just one of those "opener" sort of things, or will they attempt to try and use him as a starter more often?

Great date at bat, but this was noted too: Should I mention that Olivar had two errors behind the plate?

Any updates on Sano this week? He was looking decent for the Angels earlier this year before that rather bizarre injury. If he's healthy and in shape, it would seem like some organization might take a flier on him. But yeah, as noted, he ain't a young prospect any longer. -
Yes, both promotions are warranted. Hopefully, Jenkins continues to make strides at the next level. No real need to rush him, but also no need to keep him treading water at a lower level longer than necessary.

Mets 15, Twins 2: That's Why They Call It Flushing
Doctor Wu replied to Nate Palmer's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Brutal game, Our bullpen needs help ASAP! -
Once again, the Twins wait and wait ... hoping for a bargain or what? Meanwhile, most of the useful players, ones that might actually make a difference in a playoff run, have been snapped up by other teams. I'm sure the Twins will do something in the next day or two. but probably only a bullpen arm. Hey, I don't want to give up any of our prized prospects either, but if they are serious about contending this season, they need to make some sort of move that might truly make the team better. Otherwise, it will be another "wait until next year" once again.

If my memory is correct, Harper was also having a very good start to the 1992 season, and when it came time to pick the reserves for the All-Star game, the AL manager, which was of course Tom Kelly that year, decided NOT to pick his own player in Harper, opting for a young catcher from Texas named Ivan Rodriguez instead.

Twins Minor League Report (7/27): Wichita Wins a Wild One!
Doctor Wu replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Encouraging to see another good, albeit very short, outing from Prielipp, and Soto didn't embarrass himself either. All in all, lots of encouraging signs down on the farm this week. I'll also add to the chorus: these reports are very much appreciated. Great stuff!- 15 replies
