  1. Gotta give Drew credit for perseverance. He finally got his "real" MLB game with the Pirates last year, which was a fun story. Hope he can make back up again.
  2. As a pitcher? Really?! Never saw that one coming.
  3. "Travellin' Shoes" by Elvin Bishop would be good walkup music for Niko at this point.
  4. The progress of ALL of these young pitchers is very encouraging. Maybe this much-hyped "Pitching Pipeline" has indeed arrived.
  5. An encouraging bounce-back outing from Varland. Hope to see more like that, and maybe more of the same when he's called back up. I don't know much about Travis Adams but pitching 6 innings with 9 strikeout and 0 walks is enough for me to start taking notice!
  6. Hey, it's a beginning. I remember watching the debuts by Tom Glavine and John Smoltz back in the day, and those weren't blemish-free by any means. Who knows what the future holds, but it's a good start for Festa.
  7. Remember when Byron Buxton was Struggling?Since June 6th, Buxton is hitting .355/.397/.645 (1.042) with four doubles, a triple, and four home runs. Man, I sure hope this is not just a mirage, or a quick 3-week resurgence. It would be AMAZING to have this sort of performance from Buxton for the next 3 months.
  8. Good overview on Lee, thanks. I keep wondering which position he will end up playing when he finally gets to Minnesota. Seems like SS and 3B are taken for the next few years, and Miranda could end up being at 1B or DH. So where does Brooks Lee end up playing?
  9. I realize that the main plus-tool for Brooks Lee is his bat, but he looks a bit slow when he's running the bases (and I'm not just talking about home run trots, and I only base that observation on the limited number of clips I have watched). I checked his stats and noticed that he hasn't had any stolen bases in AAA this season, nor has he even attempted a steal. Hmm ... Okay, so he's not the second coming of Ricky Henderson, but is his lack of speed a huge concern going forward ... or not?
  10. Did any other team end up picking up Duffey for a MiLB deal? And what of Aaron Hicks after his release from the Angels?
  11. I never would have guessed it either. Sure, I had hopes that he would come up and contribute some innings, but so far the results have been much better than I expected. Overcoming the start that Gil has had with the Yankees this year will be tough, but we still have 3 full full months of the season left, so it's always possible that SWR could pull it off. I'll be curious to see if he can, or will be allowed to, pitch deeper into games as the season progresses. Or maybe, these 5-6 innings outings are the best way to use him for now?
  12. You are right, I always liked Gordon, and keep hoping he would get the chance to stick, but that never happened, and he hasn't exactly set the world on fire with Miami this year either. But Castro has turned into a VERY effective player, and for what, only a waiver claim?
  13. That may be what happens. Someone else mentioned Griffin Jax as an example of a starter turned into an effective relief pitcher, so that may be what happens with Raya. At this rate, I can't imagine him turning into an MLB starter for a long time.
  14. For me, that remains the biggest puzzle. Why is Raya seemingly the only one that is being handled in this manner? No recent injury issues, so this innings limit still seems a bit TOO cautious. But, as others have posted, we just have to trust the powers that be, who are paid to know more about these things than us lowly fans. Still, it would be nice to get more clarity on why he isn't being allowed to pitch deeper into games at this point in his career.
  15. How about Josh Staumont? Seems like he is the pitcher that nobody is talking about. Okay, he's only pitched 17 innings so far this season, but ... zero earned runs all season! Is that insane, or what? Man, I hope I'm not jinxing the guy, but he has been a jewel in the bullpen. Okay, there was a wild pitch in the Arizona game, but that's about the only blemish I can see so far. His free agent signing this past winter was one of those under-the-radar moves that may end up being a big one.
  16. Great article, Jamie, I've been following Nowlin the past 2 years and am impressed with his work ethic and attitude. If he can work on his mechanics, like he talks about in this article, and cut down on his walks, I could see him eventually becoming a part of the Twins' rotation. It certainly seems like he is willing to put in the work that is needed.
  17. I gotta laugh: almost every time after I post a negative comment about Buxton's play he has a great game. Hmm ... maybe I need to do that more often, or rather HE needs to do that more often!
  18. Kinley has had a rough season so far, but then again he's pitching in Colorado. If we can pick him for what amounts to nothing, or not much at all, it's worth taking a chance. But I'm not so sure these sorts of "buy low" moves are what we need to get us into contention for the playoffs.
  19. Considering that Buxton is healthy and starting most games, and yet he hasn't had much of an impact on games this season is a big concern for me. He's become the invisible man on this team.
  20. Yikes ... that does put things in perspective. Winning some of these games against teams like the A's is fun, but as you noted we need to be able to win games against these top tier teams too.
  21. And then there was that infamous "slide" by Pete Rose at the home plate in the All-Star game that knocked over catcher Ray Fosse. And Fosse was never the same player again. So yes, the risk is low, but injuries can still occur in All-Star games. I would love to see Royce Lewis representing the Twins, but due to his missed time earlier in the season, it's unlikely he is considered for the game. Maybe they would want to enter him in the Home Run hitting contest, but I think I'd give that one a miss too.
  22. I loved watching him play! Okay, he was never going to be an all-star, but with that uncanny ability to put the ball in play (rarely striking out OR taking walks) he was unique player in this era of baseball. I'd love to have him back, even as a coach at this point. That love of the game and zest for life is needed in these jaded times.
