  1. The decision not to re-sign Gray and Maeda also kept the Twins flexible heading into the 2024 trade deadline. With a younger, more dynamic rotation, the Twins have been able to assess their needs more accurately as the season progresses. Should they find themselves in contention, they have the prospect capital and financial flexibility to make a big move at the deadline without the albatross of aging pitchers on their payroll. Hmm ... that hopeful scenario obviously didn't happen. I think at this point the Twins front office are still assessing their needs and making lots of wishes for the health of their remaining players.
  2. Man, that didn't take long. For a pitcher who didn't give up a single earned run for nearly 3 months, he has seen his world turn upside down in a hurry.
  3. Ironic, I was just thinking about this very scenario yesterday. And I think it's certainly possible that the Twins will try to re-sign him for 2025. He's performed admirably, and when you think about the other options ...with Kiriloff seemingly out of the picture, who else will start at first base?
  4. I think there were several good options, and most of them would not have hurt us financially or forced us to give up a top prospect. But as usual the front office waited too long (hoping for what?) until nearly every potentially helpful pitcher was off the board, and then they make this last minute/hour puzzling trade for Richards. Very discouraging.
  5. Yeah, that optimism/hype didn't last too long, did it? Okay, the injuries have hurt, but we just didn't have much quality depth, and still don't.
  6. I don't think everyone is going to hate your comment. A lot of things to worry about lately and obviously, the Twins are short-handed with the injuries to Ryan, Buxton, and Correa, not to mention the lingering IL stints of Stewart and Topa. But all that aside, we are still competitive. As far as Woods-Richardson, he has performed better than I had hoped to this point. I truly feared a meltdown and maybe a return to AAA, but that hasn't happened. Credit to the coaches who aren't allowing him to go too far in games. It seems like 5 innings is fine, and letting him go 6 innings or a third time through the order may be playing with fire, but so far so good. He hasn't embarrassed himself and has actually been a very dependable part of the rotation all year. But you asked about starting him in a potential playoff game and ... I'm not sure. Part of me thinks that SWR has really matured this season and is up to the task, and part of me worries that a playoff game may be too much pressure for a young player like that to handle. But if Joe Ryan can't come back and pitch by the end of September, it looks like we may not have any other choice. Hey, we won a pennant with Les Straker as the number three starter, so all things are possible!
  7. Lots of arms have gone through our system in the past couple of years. I always thought Jarel Cotton never got a fair shake, plus pitchers like Law, Hamilton. Coulumbe, Megill, Cano, and even Michael Tonkin have gone elsewhere and performed pretty well. What a weird game, huh? As for Theilbar, looks like he's here to stay at this point, and maybe he CAN be more effective and used more effectively down the stretch Any other options for the bullpen right now are slim to none.
  8. I wasn't happy that he didn't give the Twins a chance on a new contract (then again, maybe the Twins' head office had no interest) before becoming a free agent, but sorry to hear that he's injured again. Has to be very frustrating.
  9. If Lewis keeps throwing his knuckleball for strikes that might be VERY helpful if the Twins need an extra arm in the next week or two. Okay, maybe it's too soon to think about calling him up, with all these injuries and ineffective outings by pitchers already on the team, a look-see might not hurt.
  10. In the article you noted that Jeffers joined "an exclusive club of 20-homer Twins catchers" which included Garver, Mauer, and Earl Battey. And my first thought was: what about Tim Laudner? But then I checked the records and the most he hit for the Twins was 16 in 1987. I used to watch him when he played for the Orlando Twins in AA ball, and recall that he DID hit 42 homers back in 1981, thus my recollection of him being a big power hitter. Just not quite big enough!
  11. Well, that was an ugly loss. But this line you wrote: This one ... made on-base machine Jurickson Profar look like a blindfolded Chris Parmelee. Man, that's almost poetic. Good stuff!
  12. Another very good article. Cole Sands has definitely thrived under the radar this season. Another reason to feel good about this much-hyped pitching pipeline. Looks like Sands will be a major contributor.
  13. Very good article. Labelling a relief pitcher as the MVP is a tall order, but Jax has certainly been the most consistent and effective relief pitcher for the Twins this season. He looks fearless on the mound. Whatever he did to improve the past two season is certainly working. Keep on doing it!
  14. I tend to think it WON'T mess with his head, and this game will be one of those character-building "learning experiences" that will make him sharper in his next start. Hey, he's a rookie who has jumped, what? three levels, this season? So, we can expect a few bumps in the road, but this game wasn't all that awful for him. Would have been nice if the Twins had given him some run support, but this was just one of those games. Let's hope Ober and crew can turn the tables tomorrow.
  15. Yeah, many of us on this board had high hopes for Baddoo back in the day when he was in our system, so when the Tigers "nabbed" him and then he started playing well that first season there was certainly a lot of angst. But in retrospect, it wasn't much of a loss. But yeah, good luck to him, and I hope he can bounce back with another team.
  16. I'm surprised too. I wasn't shocked to see Baddoo sent down again, but Urshela is still a good, steady player. Too bad he can't help us in our search for pitching!
  17. Agreed! The last few years we are starting to see some very encouraging player development. I hope that is the new organizational method!
  18. I've seen his photo enough at this point to make that a no-brainer, but still ... why don't they identify the players in the photos more often? Seems like it would be an easy thing to do.
  19. You can agree that he is overpaid and not worth the 10 million, but I really don't think his salary was a "major constraint" in the budget plans of the Twins. In these crazy financial times, a salary like that (which I agree is maybe too much) barely moves the needle in the overall picture.
  20. That pretty much nails it. Despite his rough start offensively, Vasquez HAS been worth the contract. His recent turnaround was certainly much better than I realized, or expected. But what you said about working with the pitching stuff is huge. With so many young pitchers being called up this season, it's important to have a solid catcher behind the plate to help their development. Vasquez may not be an all-star, but he's still been valuable to the team.
  21. I'm always a bit puzzled when the Twins call up a guy, he pitches or hits well, and then they send him back down a day or two later. Of course I realize it's a numbers game in most cases, and some other player is coming off the IL, or is being signed, but come on, give guys like Blewett more than a one game look, and then discard them like a bag of rotting vegetables.. Whether it's him, or a guy like Henriquez, we need to be seeing what they can bring to the team in the coming weeks, before the Twins have to solidify their playoff rosters. We've already lost a few arms in the pen, not to mention the starting rotation, so I think it would be smart to take a deeper look at pitchers like Blewett.
  22. Have I missed it, or has Dasan Hill not played yet since signing?
  23. I agree, Pitch framing should not even be an issue, or least not some sort of "talent" that is sought after.
