That may be the biggest reason why Rocco wasn't jettisoned last week. But how long a leash will he be given when, let's say, the team struggles to play .500 baseball by early summer next year? I don't hate Rocco, but at some point, and that may come very soon, this team might really benefit from a new manager with a new approach.

I agree, I had higher hopes for him, especially after that outrageously hot first week. I'm just hoping he learns and adapts and improves. It would be a shame for him to turn into the next coming of David McCarty.

Twins Minor League Hitter of the Year– 2024
Doctor Wu replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
An interesting list of past winners. Alas, poor Daniel Palka couldn't even stick with the White Sox.- 14 replies

Where Rocco gets it wrong OR What you can't see can kill you
Doctor Wu replied to Aerodeliria's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
All things considered, I think Baldelli is a minor problem when if comes to what is wrong with the Twins. How many more wins would a "better" manager have given us this past season? A handful perhaps. And sure, those extra few wins might have put us back in the playoffs, but I don't think we would have gone past the first round. Then again, look at what the Tigers are doing. Baseball is a wonderful but weird game. I think most organizations would replace the manager after a season like the Twins just had, but that hasn't happened, so we roll with it. The biggest problem remains the health and productivity of the players on the team. Will a new manager give us those better results? Or do we need to change more pieces on the field and in the bullpen? -
The biggest swing (and miss) was a trade with Cincinnati, acquiring Tyler Mahle in exchange for top prospects Spencer Steer, Christian Encarnacion-Strand, and Steve Hajjar. Mahle, brought in to solidify the rotation, succumbed to injuries, providing little return on investment before leaving the Twins with a depleted farm system and no ace to show for it. That ended up being a horrible trade, but I don't think it really did much to deplete our farm system. Possibly a worse trade was the one with the Orioles that you also mentioned. Losing both Povich and Cano, and only getting about a half-season of an ineffective Lopez. Ouch! As for Levine ... I honestly don't have strong feelings either way. It seems like he and Falvey have improved our "pitching pipeline" in the minor leagues, but the results for the big league team remain mixed.

Twins Minor League Starting Pitcher of the Year - 2024
Doctor Wu replied to Eric Blonigen's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I think that's an accurate outcome. All things considered, I would expect him back with the Twins again next season, hoping that he is fully healthy and can contribute.- 12 replies

Grading the 2024 Minnesota Twins: Hitters
Doctor Wu replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Some interesting grades, Some fair, some a bit overly generous, plus some, such as the negative ones given to players like Martin, Miranda, and Margot perhaps a bit too harsh. But hey, as a collective group, they were mostly all underwhelming. The biggest disappointments for me were Lewis and Lee, plus the bizarre lack of hitting from Julian, IF we want to contend again, I think we need a BIG shakeup in the roster for next season, not only better pitchers, but batters that aren't flirting with the Mendoza line.- 73 replies

That would be my pick too. This season was a disappointment, certainly, but it almost seemed inevitable over the past month that this team would falter.

I live on the other side of this freaky planet, so that remains my game plan. I check box scores and highlights online, simply because I love the Twins, but even if I was back in the states I don't think I would pay money to watch game, or even splurge for a TV package. Too many other options in life.

This might be an issue that isn't addressed enough. I eventually lost count of the number of times that Watkins waved a runner to round third and head home, only to have that runner nailed easily. Something needs to change somewhere. Batting coach, third base coach, and of course maybe the manager, but that looks unlikely after this week's declaration of faith.

Week in Review: Collapse Complete
Doctor Wu replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Such a frustrating season, especially this past 6 weeks or so. The biggest disappointment, for me, was the total freefall of Royce Lewis, as noted in Nick's article. Very puzzling, and a cause for concern. How could this "can't miss" prospect start the season so well and finish so poorly? We all hope there isn't another injury concern, but the idea that he's fatigued or tired is also worrying.- 21 replies

I love this series of articles. Thank you. That said, I have zero memory of this player. One of those "blink and you missed it" careers it seems.

If worse comes to worse (ooh, I shouldn't even say that!) we can always use SWR in the bullpen another time or two. He certainly wasn't taxed in his last start.

Yeah, that was a bad play, but that so-called bunt was even worse.

The same could be said about Ronny Henriquez, who had 29 unspectacular MLB innings at the time but was given a save opportunity a week ago against division rival Cleveland in the bottom of the 10th inning. I'm not so sure that is a fair complaint. Henriquez has pitched quite well this season, although almost never in a save situation. But what the hell, why not see what he can do?

Good point. As much as we question some, or many, of Rocco's decisions, how much better could anyone else do with this stitched-together bunch of hobbling veterans and raw rookies? As someone else posted, looking at the injuries and poor performances that this team has faced this season, it's almost a miracle that we are still in contention for a playoff spot. That said, maybe a new manager might help to do more to inspire this bunch next season.
