I wanted to start a topic and get opinions on Joe Ryan, mostly because of what Bobby Nightengale shared earlier. Bobby stated that BECAUSE the Twins have 4 starters who are all (at this point) only signed through 2027, one of them most likely is going to be traded. Personally, between Pablo, Ryan, Ober and Kremer, I could see 2 of them even not back next year.

With that, my question specifically regarding Joe Ryan. Let's say the Twins KNOW he isn't going to be extended. I'd argue he has pretty neutral value after finishing the season with a couple of ok starts, compared to what he looked like for all of August.

So, let's say hypothetically they were NOT looking specifically for a package of prospects that are in high A and won't be ready until 2029. Let's say they want a package of player or players that specifically could be ready even for opening day 2027. And for THIS exercise, let's say it's primarily one player coming back who for sure will be on the opening day roster.

My thoughts process here is, can they get a young hitter that would be part of their core (so to speak) in a deal for Joe Ryan. Maybe it's even someone that another team isn't in love with and/or is blocked.

For example, would a deal with the Red Sox were going to offer something like Triston Casas or Kristian Campbell interest anyone? I'm NOT saying they are who I would target, but that's the type of player as far as age range and veteran status I'm thinking of for this post. Possibly someone who can be a catcher or 1B or 2B, or even SS, who is ready to step in now, not years from now.

Alright, long winded answer, who ya got?

Yes, that could be. I'd still argue his value is higher than Ober or Kremer. And I don't see them trading Pablo.

Ok, for example, Milwaukee. If they offered a deal that started with catching prospect Jeferson Quero, I don't know what else would be added, but I'd be intrigued.

I'd be shocked.

Them offering Quero.

See, is he even their best catching prospect at this point?

I know there are some rumors that Milwaukee could trade Contreras this offseason to get more prospect capital. I'm just not THAT certain that Quero is who is next in line there.

I think this is a terrible offseason to be dealing someone with one year of control remaining.  What are teams going to be willing to give up given the uncertainty?

Having said that, if they do trade him, I hope they focus on max value over need.  In the offseason, there's more time to wheel and deal so you have more time to take the best offer even if it isn't an immediate need; you can simply flip the valuable piece for what you need in a subsequent trade.  It doesn't have to be a direct swap.

As for the four starters with one year of control remaining, I'd peg Pablo as the most likely to return and Ober as the most likely to be gone

Yeah if he is traded, I have to think the Twins think they got the right value back, right?

And front offices have to act as if they were having a season next year, in many ways.

I know the Brewers got Joey Ortiz and DL Hall for Corbin Burnes. I think he had quite a bit more value than Ryan does today, but I wanted to start this thread mostly to ask who our Joey Ortiz would be in this scenario.

Or, how about Joe Ryan + what? gets the A's to think about sending us Shea Langeliers? Ryan and Kendry Rojas? Is that too much? Is that not enough? Is that something you'd even be interested in? The A's certainly need pitching.

Actually, one that keeps playing in my mind; the Cubs need pitching, and the Twins could use a middle of the order bat.

How about something around Joe Ryan for Michael Busch? He is born and raised from Minnesota and would look good in the middle of the lineup here.

Would the cubs entertain that?

Worth a try, isn't it? Maybe ask for the struggling Jaxon Wiggins as well.

Twins need to make some moves, for sure.

No chance. That's three years of a starting player for one year of Ryan? I'd jump on that so fast.

Cubs have been desperate for pitching forever. They have offense. Might be a right place/right time thing?

I’d be all for that if that is available

Like I said, I'd love it. I'm guessing Tommy boy doesn't want to cut payroll though. He wants to try again to convince people they are trying to win.

Thats why they can also then sign a Freddy Peralta to a deal along with bullpen moves. The other deals could happen in conjunction with this right?

What does Michael Busch give us that 2026 Kody Clemens didn't provide?

I'd rather have Luis Torrens from the Mets than Busch from the Cubs.... assuming Jeffers isn't back

That is fine. What would you send to the Mets? Will the Mets consider trading Torrens?

I add up Busch's 2025 and 2026, but you are right his slugging fell off in 2026 for some reason. Still way better on base overall than Clemens, but he has to get that slugging back up. Which is why I thought maybe he would be a worthwhile look.

The Mets have Francisco Alvarez as their primary catcher, under team control for 3 more years

Joe Ryan and Victor Caratini for Luis Torrens and Jonathan Santucci (SP - Mets #2 prospect but not in the top 100)

I appreciate the idea. I'm not specifically  familiar with either player. That means, for me, that I have not watched these two play a minimum of a dozen times this past season. Your trade does reduce payroll by nearly $20M, which could be used elsewhere. I don't know if your idea is a good one but at least it is an idea and not merely complaining.

I've liked Santucci quite a bit since his days at Duke. I don't think we would need to send Caratini out in this regard either.

I've never been a huge Ryan fan, but he's been a good acquisition for the Twins. I think his struggles and injury in the second half have lowered his trade value. It would seem to be a hard sell to get good value for Ryan this offseason.

I think the Twins announced they will be looking to trade a veteran pitcher this offseason because they see it as a way of filling either 1B or catcher, both of which look like pretty big holes to fill in the opening day lineup. I don't know what that return looks like, but if they can turn the last year of Ryan (who won't be extended) into a starting level player at one of those positions, I'd be ok starting off the year with that.
