2026 Trade Deadline

Because of course the Dodgers did. According to Fangraphs they gave up 2 top 5 prospects, MLB.com has them both in the top 7. The rich continue to get richer...

I'm not surprised that the Dodgers got Skubal, but I am a bit surprised that the Tigers didn't wait until the deadline to deal him, and see if they could drive up the price a bit. I am sure they are thrilled with the package they got for Skubal though. I predict Ryan and Hope will be problematic for the Twins in the future. This is likely the start of a Tiger sell-off. Maybe we can get Casey Mize.

Luis Castillo was traded to the White Sox earlier today for Seranthony Dominguez, Nolan Jones, and Boston Smith. This seems like a great move for the White Sox. Castillo will be a good veteran presence on a young team, and he was in the postseason last year with Seattle so he has playoff experience which a lot of that young White Sox team lacks. I hate to say it, but I really like the trade for Chicago.

Return for the Tigers in the Skubal trade is River Ryan (MLB #68 prospect, Dodgers #7), Zyhir Hope (MLB #22 Prospect, Dodgers #5) and Brady Smith (Dodgers #17 Prospect)

This isn't your father's Luis Castillo the ChiSox are getting.  This guy is a shell of his former self.  I dont see this move doing anything positive for the ChiSox so I approve the move.

MLB so badly has to fix their systems.

I would take Castillo over Kremer if you're just going by their 2026 play... but yeah, I wouldn't love trading a prospect for cooked Castillo.

I'm not sure I would. The Twins can choose to walk away from Kremer at the end of the season. Castillo still has large contract guarantees through next year, and could even trigger an option for 2028.

I hope the Dodgers roll over every team they face from now through the World Series.  Let’s see the most boring end to a National League regular season and the most boring post-season in the history of the game.   Fans ditch MLB to watch professional pickleball.  
Then maybe teams will grow … and hold out for a salary cap next year.

Way more early trades this year than normal. I wonder why. 

Not a huge Peralta fan, but he could turn it around.

When you have teams like Twins who want to get things moving it jumpstarts the market. Also means possibly more overpays. After thinking on it some more I do think the trades the Twins did were slight overpays but not bad all things considered.

Absolutely - seems like Gausman to the Cubs could be the single deal at this deadline that most makes me say "why couldn't the Twins do that?"

The prospects going the other way seem modest (MLB is somewhat higher on them than Fangraphs.) Gausman is a rental, but so what? He's good!

The White Sox landed a pretty good reliever in Brazoban. Tyler Mahle got traded again, lol. Plenty of starters who are sub-replacement level getting traded in the past week.

And it seems like the White Sox gave up about what the Twins gave for Minter. Brazoban has more years of team control. Maybe the Twins front office doesn't think he's the real deal given his age.

I'm trying to think of an equivalent trade the Twins could have done to land Gausman instead of Kremer. In addition to Jhomnardo Reyes I'm thinking they would have had to add Hendry Mendez or Gabriel Gonzalez.

Would I do it?  I don't think so. With or without Gausman I don't think this team has enough to make a deep playoff run. I'm ok with adding at the margins to see where this goes, but you are not going to convince me to give up a top ten prospect for someone who won't help this team beyond this year. The Cubs are also assuming $7 million of Gausman 's salary, which isn't nothing.

The trade was for the Cubs 17th and 20th prospects. It is obviously not linear team to team, but that would be something like Ryan Gallagher and James Ellwanger. I"m not sure I would be willing to give that up for a rental, but it is not unreasonable.

The Angels will receive top shortstop prospect Arjun Nimmala, outfielder Eddie Micheletti and right-hander Angel Rivero from the Blue Jays for Jose Soriano.

I am a bit confused by what the Blue Jays are doing. They have acquired 2 starting pitchers in Jameson Tailon and Jose Soriano, but they also traded away a starter in Kevin Gausman. They are only 4.5 out of the wild card so maybe they think they are still in it?

Taillon was DFA'd, but acquiring Soriano now is strange.

The Toronto-Angels trade more or less highlights how different organizations have separate values on prospects and MLB players. Nimmala has whiffed a ton at AA, is not fast, but can play shortstop. The pitcher is a lottery type grab and the outfielder a stretch pick. Soriano saw his stock dive recently but it seems like a slim return for a controlled starting pitcher.

I think Reyes is a better value than either of the Cubs guys IMO.
