Yes, and it boils down to more me than we in their minds

Talent aside, I would not be able to carry the day-in day-out workload they do.

If you just listened to the conversation that was had on the air, I am more convinced that Rocco was a FO man that just happened to be hired as a manager.  Shelton is more of a manager.  He can still be a player's manager, but a manager, nonetheless.  Shelton and his staff could see that the defense was not good as far back as spring training but allowed it to go forward this season to see if any adjustments were made before making changes.  I believe Rocco would have hung onto the opening day setup forever and would have never seen Lewis or Wallner sent down.  We would have never seen Kreidler.  We likely wouldn't have picked up Gomez.  I think Rocco expected the players to figure it out.  Shelton is involved in the continual player's development.  That has been one of the largest positives of the season.  We basically have the same record as last year with a weaker team.  That says something about Shelton and getting the players to respond.

While I agree with your take about Rocco vs. Shelton.  Shelton does not make the decisions on who is on the roster. That was Falvey and now Zoll.  I am not sure I am seeing much difference between the two.  Falvey sent Wallner down in 24 after 25 ab's, regardless of how bad he looked that is an awfully quick hook.  I can't believe that Shelton wanted Gray over Kreidler coming of out of spring training if he thought defense was going to be a concern.  Yes Shelton can lobby to get certain guys on the roster from the minors.  But he is not scouring the waiver wire saying oh go sign Gomez.  This churning of pitchers is completely on Zoll and he has made one good pickup.

I agree that players should not "admire" any of their hits, look at it on video later. It is reasonable for a player to assume a comebacker to the pitcher is going to be fielded, he had barely even made his first step towards 1B and the ball hit the pitchers glove. He saw it roll away and hustled to 1B, making it a close play.

Well, this was an example where reasonable and exceptional parted and cost him getting on base. I think it is also reasonable to always try to be exceptional, regardless of what is reasonable - especially for a minimum $780K/year, and usually at least several million if not 10s of millions or 100s of millions.

Got him anyway no challenge needed

Yeah, it turned out OK, but it's the 8th inning, the team has both challenges left, and Trout at the plate. Have to go 100% all the time, or so I'm told.
