If you just listened to the conversation that was had on the air, I am more convinced that Rocco was a FO man that just happened to be hired as a manager.  Shelton is more of a manager.  He can still be a player's manager, but a manager, nonetheless.  Shelton and his staff could see that the defense was not good as far back as spring training but allowed it to go forward this season to see if any adjustments were made before making changes.  I believe Rocco would have hung onto the opening day setup forever and would have never seen Lewis or Wallner sent down.  We would have never seen Kreidler.  We likely wouldn't have picked up Gomez.  I think Rocco expected the players to figure it out.  Shelton is involved in the continual player's development.  That has been one of the largest positives of the season.  We basically have the same record as last year with a weaker team.  That says something about Shelton and getting the players to respond.

I guess the front office knows more than I do about baseball or they got lucky. Whichever way it is I'll enjoy being wrong.

Yesterday and Angels broadcaster said the Twins had the most potent offense in the A.L.     Surely he's wrong I thought.

He was right,  but as we all know....

"Good pitching beats good hitting."

( The first things my dad taught me about baseball as an 8 year old is still the most important thing.)

2nd time he  was presuming  and 2nd time he was wrong,   no excuses for not hustling

Presume what, a catch by Soriano? Fairly reasonable by most batter-runners (he's not a speedster). Once he saw the ball bounce away he hustled down the line.

As far as getting caught at 3B, that was an incredibly lucky bounce and catch.

I agree with mrtwinsfan on this one. It is only reasonable to plan on the defense not making the play, and hustle out of the box and presume you can make it. That is a professional. Or it should be. But you are right, "most batter-runners" fail at this. Admiring the deep fly that isn't a homer, the fly that is dropped and they could have been on second or third instead of first, etc. What else do they have to do? Walk back to the bench. May as well give it all the energy you can when your turn comes up. Always.

It really blows my mind that they can’t get the players to do that. One base can be the difference in a win or loss.

I agree that players should not "admire" any of their hits, look at it on video later. It is reasonable for a player to assume a comebacker to the pitcher is going to be fielded, he had barely even made his first step towards 1B and the ball hit the pitchers glove. He saw it roll away and hustled to 1B, making it a close play.
